HSC Japanese continuers scope

The HSC Japanese Continuers course is designed for learners with a sound
knowledge of the Japanese spoken language, writing system and has completed
the requisite preliminary course to a satisfactory standard. Students access
learning by completing tasks and activities through the study of different themes
and topics. These topics include the travel in Japan, future plans and current and
global issues. Students are assessed on their ability to communicate through
speaking and writing tasks and to analyse and deduce meaning from texts both
listening and reading responding tasks.

The Continuers Preliminary course is designed for learners with a sound

knowledge of the Japanese spoken language, writing system and has completed
the requisite hours of language study to a satisfactory standard. Students access
learning by completing tasks and activities through the study of different themes
and topics. These topics include the daily routine, leisure, and home and
neighbourhood. Students are assessed on their ability to communicate through
speaking and writing tasks and to analyse and deduce meaning from texts both
listening and reading responding tasks.

Year 11 reports
Caroline should be commended on a great start to the Continuers course.
Caroline is focused on her learning and is achieving at a high standard in
speaking, reading and writing and displays sound listening skills. She is able to
uses a range of strategies to maintain communication with both fluency and
accuracy as is reflected in her outstanding speaking assessment result. Further,
Caroline can express ideas through applying knowledge of language structures to
create original text in Japanese. In reading, Caroline is able to analyse, process
and respond to texts that are in Japanese and also infers points of view, attitudes
or emotions from language and context. Although Caroline achieved sound
listening results she could further enhance her skills by practicing listening drills
such as the provided by HSC online.
Rebecca has a fantastic attitude to her language studies and has made sound
progress in the Continuers course this semester. Rebecca asks informed
questions and always ensures that she understands one grammar point before
moving onto the next. Rebeccas strength is her reading and responding skills,
she is able to analyse, process and respond to texts that are in Japanese with a
high degree of accuracy. In speaking, Rebecca uses a range of strategies to
maintain communication and received a great result in her speaking assessment.
She is a very capable language student but sometimes doubts her potential. I
encourage Rebecca to have more confidence in her ability so that she is able to
achieve to her ability in exam situations. Rebecca should aim to further enhance

her listening skills and try to practice more listening drills such as the provided
by HSC online. Particularly, in order to develop the skill of listening for the gist of
meaning and key words in a given text.
Phebe should be commended on a fantastic start to the Continuers course. She
should be proud of her outstanding results in reading, listening and speaking.
Phebe can analyse, process and respond to texts that are in Japanese with a high
degree of accuracy. She has an ability to predict and deduce meaning in familiar
contexts through picking up on key words and identifying the gist of texts.
Further, Phebe can express ideas through applying knowledge of language
structures to create original text in Japanese. In reading, she is able to analyse,
process and respond to texts that are in Japanese and also infers points of view,
attitudes or emotions from language and context. I encourage Phebe to complete
all homework tasks to ensure that she is consolidating her learning and practice
writing tasks on a regular basis.
Mikaylas application to her language studies should be commended. She is selfmotivated and has a strong work ethic which is evident in her sound results this
semester. Mikaylas strength is her reading and responding skills, she is able to
analyse, process and respond to texts that are in Japanese with a high degree of
accuracy. In speaking, she uses a range of strategies to maintain communication
and received a great result in her speaking assessment. Mikayla should aim to
further enhance her listening skills and try to practice more listening drills such
as the provided by HSC online. Particularly, in order to develop the skill of
listening for the gist of meaning and key words in a given text. Further, I
encourage Mikayla to complete writing tasks in her own time to enhance her
efficiency in exam situations.
Chrystals application to her language studies should be commended. She is

speaking, Chrystal uses a range of strategies to maintain communication and
received a sound result in her speaking assessment.
I encourage Chrystal to use her time more effectively during exams so that she is
able to achieve to her potential. Chrystal should aim to further enhance her
listening skills and try to practice more listening drills such as the provided by
HSC online. Particularly, in order to develop the skill of listening for the gist of
meaning and key words in a given text.
Phoebe has a great attitude to her language studies and should be proud of her
achievements thus far in the Continuers course. She asks informed questions to
further her knowledge and displays a developed ability to recall information
efficiently and accurately. Phoebe achieved an outstanding result in her speaking
assessment last term where she was able to exchange information, opinions and
experiences in Japanese to a high degree of fluency. In writing, Phoebe structures
and sequences ideas and information and applies knowledge of language
structures to the production of original text. Phoebes reading skills are of a high

standard as she can analyse, process and respond to texts that are in Japanese
and also infers points of view, attitudes or emotions from language and context.
Phoebe should aim to further enhance her listening skills and try to practice
more listening drills such as the provided by HSC online. Particularly, in order to
