CONCERT PREVIEW

Alignment of the stars

Double bill with Journey brings back
members of Santanas classic lineup
By Brian Bingaman

hen you hear the

music of Santana
and Journey on
the radio, its not obvious
that the two bands have a
common link.
Journey guitarist Neal
Schon and their 1973-1980
keyboardist and singer
Gregg Rolie (true fans know
Rolie and Steve Perry were
Journeys co-lead singers
over a span of three albums)
were both charter members
of Santana.
Both will be in the house
April 16 at the PPL Center
for a rare Santana/Journey
co-headlining concert that
should intertwine branches
of classic rocks family tree
in electric fashion. Its the
last (so far) of three East
Coast shows where the two
bands share the stage.
Schon, of course, will be
performing with Journey,
and he and Rolie are slated
to perform as special guests
with Carlos Santanas current band of Cindy Blackman Santana on drums,
singers Tommy Anthony
and Andy Vargas, a horn
section comprising Bill Ortiz and Jeff Cressman, keyboardist David K. Mathews,
bassist Benny Rietveld, and

percussionists Karl Perazzo
and Paoli Mejas.
Making this an even more
jaw-dropping affair will be
additional special guest appearances by original Santana members: percussionist Michael Carabello and
drummer Michael Shrieve.
Shrieve said in a phone interview that hes seen on
online message boards that
Journey fans would be ecstatic to see Rolie sing with
Journey again.

would actually happen,

Shrieve would only say:
You never know.
Filipino singer Arnel
Pineda took over Steve Perrys frontman role in Journey in 2007.
The Allentown show
comes the day after the release of the album Santana IV, which stunningly
recaptures the feel of early
Santana, with Rolies lead
vocals and vintage organ
sound joining Carlos Santanas signature guitar attack, and backed by Schon,
Shrieve, Carabello, Rietveld and Perazzo. The title is a reference to sequentially following 1971s Santana III, the last album to
feature Carabello with the
rest of the Woodstock-era
lineup.
Of the reunion, Shrieve
said, They had been talking about it for years. I

CONCERT PREVIEW

Square peg in a square hole

Peter Murphy on the road performing
rare acoustic career retrospective
By Brian Bingaman
bbingaman@21st-centurymedia.com
@brianbingaman on Twitter

eter Murphy called

whats going on with
him right now a chaotic settling in period.
Its the early part of an
unusual Stripped acoustic tour, backed by guitarist John Andrews and violinist Emilio China. The
deep-baritone, British alternative singer best
known for his MTV 120
Minutes hit Cuts You Up,
and the perennial Halloween playlist song Bela Lugosis Dead by Bauhaus
had played seven shows in
eight days, selling out three
of them.
Add his April 20 show at
Philadelphias Underground
Arts to the sold-out list.
However, theres an April 17
concert at The Chameleon
Club in Lancaster where
you can catch him.
These are the first appearances Murphys made
since the death of David
Bowie, who was an indelible influence to the extent
of covering Ziggy Stardust with Bauhaus in the
80s and Space Oddity as
part of his Secret Covers
singles series on iTunes that

was released in 2009.

On Jan. 11, he tweeted
from @petermurphyinfo:
Rest in the lap of compassion, David Bowie. Ill find
his resting place to hand
back this stardust borrowed. Prayers of love to
you & your family.
Guarded about specifics
of the Stripped sets saying only that the trio would
cover his catalog like a collection Murphy said its
possible he will pay musical
homage to Bowie. Murphy
commented that he found it
endearing and very impressive how discreet the
iconic singer was about his
illness, and thought Bowie
would have frowned on the
fans dramatic expressions
of grief.
The Stripped live presentation he described as
intense yet graceful, taking things to another
place, a discovery of the
songs within another interpretation and as accessible as a Sinatra or an Elvis
performance.
Youre listening to each
other, and theres a breath
in the performance, he said
of being on stage with excellent acoustic player Andrews, and China, who adds
electronic treatments to his
violin, like symphonic and

keyboard sounds and interesting, abstract soundscape parts.

On the tour, some fans
have taken advantage of
upgrading their tickets to
include a meet-and-greet
with Murphy and the band.
Theyre very endearing. I
try to give people their
moneys worth by being
with them, Murphy said of
the face-to-face interaction.
The producers of The
Twilight Saga movies
slipped in a subtle tribute to
the gloomy goth imagery of
Bauhaus and Bela Lugosis

overnight global sensation.

A decade later, he is synonymous with the ukulele.
His 2016 release, Jake
Shimabukuro: Live In Japan, is a double CD 15 song
collection of original compositions and cover songs
that exemplifies the creative diversity of this amazing artist. Backed by Nolan Verner (bass) and Michael Grande (keyboards),
Shimabukuro delivers a
flawless performance abundant with the energy, passion and fan interaction
that has become his signature stage show.
This year marked the
15th anniversary of my
debut in Japan, recalls
Shimabukuro, while on tour
in Nashville, Tennessee. I
thought it would be kind of
cool to release an in-Japan
live record just to recognize
that. My shows are so different in Japan than in the
U.S. or anywhere else in the
world. I think it was cool for
people outside Japan to get
a sense of what the vibe and
energy is like when we do
play Japan. The audience
will clap along. I speak in
Japanese. Its just a whole
different side of me of that I
hoped would be interesting
and a bit comical for people
whove never been to a show
in Japan.
The bass player, Norman Belford, and I have
been playing together for
over a year, adds Shimabukuro. Hes a fine musician and a wonderful cat to
play with. Just for the Japan
show I had a buddy of mine,
who is from Hawaii. His
name is Michael Grande
and he plays keyboards.
This is the first time that
I played in this configuration. Normally if I do a trio
its with bass and drums.

This is the first time that

I didnt use drums, and I
just went bass and keys. I
think it worked out nicely.
I really enjoyed the sound
and the subtle texture that
the keyboard could add to
what the bass and ukulele
were doing.
You definitely feel like
youre there, says Shimabukuro regarding the CD.
We didnt do any editing
to the music. It was hard,
because a lot of times you
want to go back and tweak
things or think I wish I
had done this instead. I
learned that, once you start
changing that, you might
fix the timing of something,
but then theres something
that gets lost thats more
crucial than just playing a
chord or something not lining up that just adds to the
feel and element of a live album. I really just had to tie
my hands behind my back
and not change anything.
Im glad I did, because now
going back and listening to
it Im glad we didnt touch
things because it just feels
good. We left the audience
mics a little hotter than the
mix so that you can get a
sense of the energy from the
audience. When I listen to
it, I feel like Im back in Japan playing. It really did, I
think, capture the ambience
and the energy and the vibe
of the performance. Im really happy with it.
A hit dating back to the
late 90s in his home land
of Hawaii and in Japan,
Shimabukuros ability to
combine elements of jazz,
blues, funk, rock, bluegrass,
classical, folk, and flamenco
resonated with fans, elevating his popularity and the
appreciation for the ukulele
to unforeseen heights.

The exposure he received

from his While My Guitar
Gently Weeps video accelerated demand for Shimabukuro as a concert draw.
Offers to collaborate creatively came from Cyndi
Lauper, Bela Fleck, Jimmy
Buffett and Yo-Yo Ma,
among others.
Signed to Sony Records
(Japan), Shimabukuro subsequently formed his own
label in 2002 (Hitchhike
Records) to expand his distribution beyond Japan and
Hawaii. His solo works include Sunday Morning
(2002), Crosscurrent
(2003), Walking Down
Rainhill (2004), Dragon

(2006), Live (2009) and
Peace Love Ukulele (2011),

Perfect World or a serial
killer in Mr. Brooks?
Now, hes adding to his
line-up of heavies with
his latest role. In Criminal, Costner plays Jericho
Stewart, a lawbreaker whos
drafted by a CIA chief (Gary
Oldman) into a freaky experiment.
The spooks, with help
from a neuroscientist

(Tommy Lee Jones), inject

into Jerichos consciousness
the memories and skill set
of a dead CIA agent (Ryan
Reynolds) in hopes of allowing Jericho to finish the
dangerous job started by
Reynolds.
Even though Jericho does
some dastardly things in
the movie, Costner is only
half-joking when he defends
his character as a man in a
lot of pain.
Bad? I wasnt bad, he
says. I just dont think people understood my problem.
What I wanted to do
is show the holes in my
head and the scars in the
back of my neck [from the
implantation]. In old Hollywood, you wouldnt have

Earnest, old-fashioned The Letters offers portrait of Mother Teresa

By Amy Longsdorf
For Digital First Media

An enlightening biopic
about Mother Teresa (Juliet Stevenson), The Letters (2015, Fox, PG, $23)
takes place during a pivotal time in the nuns life,
when she left her Calcutta
convent to help care for the
dying and homeless.
Much is made of letters
Mother Teresa wrote detailing her crisis of faith.
But the epistles rarely figure into the action. This
is, at its heart, an earnest,
old-fashioned drama about
a woman who discovers
herself as she tends to the
sick and poor. Always underrated, Stevenson is terrific, illuminating the nuns
warmth and conviction. Extras: featurette and commentaries.

Also New This Week

Nightingale (2014, Kino,

unrated, $30): In this
quietly moving family
drama, an iPad-obsessed
teenager (Xin Yi Yang)
reluctantly tags along with
her grandfather (Bao Tian
Li) as he makes a pilgrimage to his tiny village in rural
China. Even though its a
tad unbelievable that the
youngster would develop
an almost instantaneous
respect for tradition and
family, Nightingale is so
beguiling, thanks to the fine
performances and gorgeous
locations, that youll be
happy to go along for the
ride. Extras: featurettes.

The Hallow (2015, Shout

Factory, unrated, $28):
When a London-based conservationist (Joseph Mawle)
moves to rural Ireland, he
doesnt waste any time running afoul of both the locals

and the supernatural slime

things which live deep in
the woods. Soon, he and his
wife (Bojana Novakovic) and
their infant son are fighting
for their lives against a slew
of demonic beings. Visual
artist Corin Hardy makes his
directorial debut with this
creature feature, which delivers plenty of visual poetry
alongside the terror. Extras:
featurettes.

Nights With Theodore

(2016, Film Movement,
unrated, $25): Two twentysomething Parisians (Pio
Marmai, Agathe Bonitzer)
meet at a party and then
head out to a nearby city
park to spend the night. At
dawn, the couple go their
separate ways but return
to the public garden every
night to discover its meadows, pavilions and bridges.

years, Costner still gets a

charge out of what he does
for a living, particularly
when hes involved behindthe-scenes, as he has been
on assorted projects from
Dances With Wolves to
Black Or White.
I do love it, says the actor, a father of seven who
has been married to second
wife Christine Baumgartner for a dozen years. I
dont know what it is [about
the process] but you go off
together with a friend and
you start firing ideas back
and forth, and when you
can get paid to do it, then
it really gets cool.
I like story-telling. I like

my list. Its not that I dont

But its not my favorite
part.
For his next role in Hidden Figures, Costner plays
the supporting role of a
NASA chief. Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson
star in the film as two engineers who contributed to
the space race in the early
1960s.
These women had a tremendous impact on NASA,
says Costner. In fact, John
Glenn wasnt even going
to go [to the moon] because the computer, the
IBM, had broken down.
John Glenn said, I will go
if this woman does the calculations. Thats moving to
me. And that woman went
on to have a 40-year career
at NASA.
She was touched by
God with a gift. The other
woman, really funny, comes
home after work and has
to fix a TV for her husband
and has to fix the car. She
actually fixes the IBM thats
not working.
This is a celebration of
people who had a big impact but [their contributions] have been lost to
history. It happens all the
time.

Tommy Lee Jones stars as Dr. Franks in Criminal.

Hidden Figures isnt
Costners first movie with
a racially diverse cast. In
fact, he prides himself on
making a number of films
which have tackled issues of racism, including
Dances With Wolves, The
Bodyguard and Black Or
White.
In Black Or White, Octavia [Spencer] was really
good, recalls Costner. I
was pretty good in it, too.
Nobody mentioned that
movie at all [for awards].
No one talked about the fact
that we were bringing up issues of [race].
As for the controversy
that surrounded the Oscars
this year, in regards to all
of the acting nominees being white, Costner, a twotime Academy Award winner, is in favor of changes
being made to the organizations voting body.
I think the demographics of the voting body has
to change but I never see
overt racism myself, says
the actor. Maybe it is there.
I dont know. If I catch it or
I see it, I would put a stop
to it.
In addition to Hidden
Figures, Costner is working on his next directorial
outing, his first since 2003s
acclaimed Open Range.

new movie is going to be
very lengthy.
Its a Western and Id
like to direct it next spring,
says Costner. I just came
back from scouting it last
week in New Mexico. Its
about 10 hours long and
Im not going to leave anything out.
I havent figured out the
configuration yet. It could
be four movies. It could
be released Memorial Day,
Christmas, Fourth of July,
every six months in a true
serial fashion, as opposed to
somebody making a movie
and going, Hey, it did all
right. Lets make another
one.
It covers about 30 years
and its really beautiful. Its
very harsh. Its very womanoriented, if you can believe
that. Men are in it, and
they drive the violence. But
women are a very big part
of it.

A huge hit in its native

Korea, the latest actioncomedy from Ryoo Seungwan (The Berlin File)
pits an everyman police
detective (Hwang Jungmin ) against a corrupt
one-percenter (Yoo Ah-in)
who, among other illegal
activities, is trying to bust
up a union of truckers.
The chases and fights are
well-choreographed, and
the humor, exemplified by
a scene in which the cops
compare their scars and
bruises, pokes fun at macho invincibility. Extras:
none.

I Knew Her Well (1965,

Criterion, unrated, $30):

This rarely seen Italian
film from the mid-1960s
centers on a small-town
girl (Stefania Sandrelli)
whos moved to Rome to
try and make it as actress.
Sandrelli flits from one
party to another, hooking up with strange men
and working odd jobs to
stay afloat. Everyone, it
seems, is out to exploit
everyone else, a situation,
which in the end, sinks
our heroine. Even though
its a smidge too episodic,
the film works thanks to
the Sandrellis portrait of
emptiness, a soundtrack
of addictive Italian pop,
and director Antonio Pietrangelis condemnation
of a culture that celebrates
image over substance.
Extras: featurettes and

audition footage.

Angel (1982, Twilight

Time, R, $30): After
witnessing the murder of
his manager as well as a
deaf-mute girl, an Irish
saxophonist named Danny
(Stephen Rea) begins unraveling. Unable to shake
off the violence, Danny
makes his way through
the dingier corners of
Northern Ireland, trying
to track down the killers.
But one act of retribution
only leads to another until
Dannys life is in ruins.
Now on Blu-ray, the directorial debut of Neil Jordan
(The Crying Game) is
a blackly comic crime
thriller which argues that
violence only begats more
violence. Extras: none.

Shadow On The Wall

(1949, Warner Archive,
unrated, $20): How far
would you go to cover
up a murder? If youre
Aunt Dell (Ann Sothern),
youd let an innocent man
(Zachary Scott) take the
rap and see to it that the
only witness (Gigi Perreau)
winds up dead, even if she
is a nine-year-old child.
Also starring in this dark
drama is Nancy Davis
(later Nancy Reagan) who
plays a psychiatrist determined to get to the bottom
of what Perreau saw the
night her stepmother was
murdered. Part noir and
part psychological thriller,
Shadow is sinister and
suspenseful in all the right
ways. Extras: none.

Number One (1968, Fox,

PG-13, $20): As a cynical,

past-his-prime quarterback for the New Orleans
Saints, Cat Catlan
(Charlton Heston) is so far
off his game, the fans have
taken to booing him as he
strides onto the field. Even
his wife (Jessica Walter)
has given up on him, forcing him to look elsewhere
(Diana Muldaur) for a
little affection. Not a lot
happens in this character
study, which is primarily
set between seasons. But
this is Heston like youve
never seen him before.
And that alone makes
Number One worth
checking out. Extras:
none.

It seems Bruce has
stored up plenty of good
karma, too, considering
he became a primetime TV
star pretty much through
blind luck. His role in

Comic Book Men, which

documents the daily happenings at a comic shop in
Red Bank, came out of left
field, he says.
The shop, which filmmaker Kevin Smith opened
nearly 20 years ago and
named Jay & Silent Bobs
Secret Stash, is within
walking distance of Bruces
office. Id been friends
with the Stash [employees] since they opened the
store, stopping in daily to

appraise comics and other

collectibles, he says.
One day, the employees
at The Stash called Bruce
up and asked him to audition for a spot on their new
reality series: I went down
there and sat in front of a
camera. They wanted me
to talk for 15 minutes, but
I talked for 55 minutes. After that, he began making
frequent appearances on
the show (now in its fifth
season) and is currently

credited as a consulting
producer.
Due to his exposure on
AMC, now when Bruce
shows up to speak and give
appraisals at conventions
like the Great Philly Comic
Con, he enjoys some celebrity among his peers.

Despite recently suffering

through a double whammy
of the flu with strep throat,
life is great for Mt. Airy native Chuck Nice.
In a phone interview, the
stand-up comedian said he
makes a decent living headlining shows every weekend
in New York, where he now
lives. And even with the additional workload of the TV
shows hes on including

TV and HGTVs Home

to be home and take care of
my family.
Nices children are 16, 9
and 2. He hasnt toured in
several years because the

most important thing in

my life is being a father,
he said.
His ability to get laughs
on a variety of TV shows
since 2004 notably including The Sizzler segment of VH1s Best Week
Ever gets him recognized in public. However,
the punch line is people
usually cant remember his
name.
I do enjoy this part of
my life ... Hey, youre that
guy I know from the thing
that you do. Theyll say:
Man, I cant remember
your name, but youre everywhere, Nice said.
April 22 he headlines a
comedy show at the Keswick Theatre, which is a
benefit for the Abington
Police Athletic League. I
played a little PAL football
when I was a kid. Its a great

way for the police force to

be integrated into the community, he said, adding he
wished there were more police-community initiatives
across the country because
of the unsettling frequency
of accusations of police brutality in the last two years.
Nice disclosed that he
was approached to do the
benefit because an Abington cop is a friend of his
mothers. If I said no, they
were gonna tell my Mama,
he laughed.
I still love Philadelphia,
noted Nice, joking that the
area seems to have drastically improved since he
moved north to New York.
His stand-up act he described as experiential humor, giving an example of
a conversation he witnessed
between his wife and his
then-6-year-old son. The

boy innocently asked his

mother if she had a penis.
Nice continued: She said
no. He said: Oh you gotta
get one of these these
things are awesome!
Telling a story has always been the best form of
entertainment in human
history, he said.
His talent was first recognized as a frequent caller
to the Opie and Anthony
radio show in 1999. This
led to an on-air sidekick
gig on Leslie Golds Radio
Chick show in New York
and almost simultaneously,
stand-up comedy which
opened the door to TV. A
lot of the (TV) industry goes
out to the (comedy) clubs,
Nice said.
When asked about how
Worlds Dumbest was
produced, he replied, If
you could see the set-up,

Nice, the commentary segments are shot in isolation in a space the size of
