ADVICE & INFORMATION:

1. Explain to the mother as well as to other family members the current status of the patient and the
possible condition the child has. Orient with an overview of the condition, the process of the
diagnosis, course of the condition, the prognosis and basically what to expect with regards to the
collaborative management that will be employed.
2. Stress to the mother and the family members that looking after the child will be very challenging but
to always bear in mind that the child with such a condition cannot help their behavior. Some issues
may arise like, difficulty with tucking to sleep, getting ready for school, listening and carrying out
instructions, being organized, being in social occasions, shopping, among others.
3. Explain to the family about the treatment modalities that will be used to manage his condition,
provide the rationale for the laboratory orders as well as the medications to be taken and their
corresponding effects.
4. Explain also that the management of the patient will involve a range of professionals who
specialize in different areas of treatment or support. Specialist doctors, learning disability specialist,
social workers, occupational therapist, speech therapist. Informing them in advance will help them
prepare mentally, emotionally and most importantly with the financial aspect.
5. Advice mother and family members to adhere on having clear rules about behavior, encouraging
and rewarding the childs good behavior, and making sure that his day has structure and routine.

6. Contact the school or schoolteacher about the childs condition and work out whether he needs
extra help in class.

7. Advice about a good diet and regular exercise for the child. Also advise to keep a diary of what the
child eats and drinks, and their behavior afterwards. If there seems to be a link between certain
food and drink and the child's behavior, mother should be offered an appointment with a dietitian.

8. Adherence to schedule of follow-ups is imperative for the doctor to properly monitor the childs
progress.
