appearedinvariousissuesofWorld'sFinestComicsuntilissue#140(1964).TheGreenArrowandSpeedyfeature
wasoneoffivebackupfeaturestobepromotedinoneoftheearliestteamupbooks,LeadingComics.

GreenArrowwasoneofthefewDCcharacterstokeepgoingaftertheGoldenAgeofComicBooks.The
longevityofthecharacterwasduetotheinfluenceofcreatorMortWeisinger,whokeptGreenArrowand
AquamanasbackupfeaturestotheheadliningSuperboyfeature,firstinMoreFunComicsandthenAdventure
ComicssinceSupermanrelatedtitleswereallbutguaranteedsuccessduringthisperiod,GreenArrowand
Aquamanenduredthroughoutthe1940sandintothe1950srelativelyunchanged,outlastingmostoftheirgolden
agecontemporaries.Asaresult,theyevadedbeingrevivedand"reimagined"fortheSilverAge,astheFlash,
GreenLantern,andothersweretheJayGarrickFlashgavewaytotheBarryAllenFlash,theAlanScottGreen
LanterntotheHalJordanGreenLantern,andsoon,butGreenArrowandAquamanremainedOliverQueenand
ArthurCurrythroughout.

AsidefromsharingAdventureComicswithhim,issue#258featuredanencounterbetweenayoungerOliver
QueenandSuperboy.TheGreenArrowandSpeedyfeatureduringthisperiodincludedashortrunin1958written
byDickandDaveWoodanddrawnbyJackKirby.Formuchofthisperiod,GreenArrow'sadventureswere
writtenbyFranceHerron,whowasthecharacter'sprimaryscripter19471963.[6]

NealAdamsandDennisO'Neil,19691983

In1969,artistNealAdamsupdatedthecharacter'svisualappearancebygivinghimaVanDykebeardandcostume
ofhisowndesigninTheBraveandtheBold#85(AugustSeptember1969).[7]WriterDennisO'Neilfollowedup
onGreenArrow'snewappearancebycompletelyremakingthecharacter'sattitudeinJusticeLeagueofAmerica
#75(coverdatedNovember1969),havingOliverQueenlosehisfortuneandbecomeanoutspokenadvocateofthe
underprivilegedandthepoliticalleftwing.ThestoryalsoturnedteammateBlackCanaryintoaloveinterestfor
Queen.[8]

Intheearly1970s,GreenArrowbecameacofeaturewithGreenLantern(HalJordan)inanacclaimedseriesof
storiesbyO'NeilandAdamsthatdealtwithvarioussocialandpoliticalissues.Thetwocostarsservedtorepresent
contrastingsociopoliticalviewpoints:GreenArrowspokeforradicalchangewhileGreenLanternwasan
establishmentliberalfigure,wantingtoworkwithinexistinginstitutionsofgovernmentandlaw.[8]Queen
convincesJordantoseebeyondhisstrictobediencetotheGreenLanternCorps,tohelpthosewhowereneglected

beatuppickuptruckto"findAmerica",alongthewaywitnessingtheproblemsof
corruption,racism,pollution,aswellasoverpopulationconfrontingthenation.One
story(inissues#7879)wasevenwidelyinterpretedasanallegoryfortheManson
Familycultmurders,thoughO'Neilhasemphasizedthatthestorywasaboutthe
authoritarianleftandnotManson.[8]

InGreenLantern(vol.2)#8586,itisrevealedthatGreenArrow'sward,Speedy,
isaddictedtoheroin.[2]SpeedyovercomeshisaddictionwiththehelpoftheBlack
Canary.Thisstorypromptedamassivepublicreaction,includingacongratulatory
letterfromthemayorofNewYork,JohnLindsay.[8]However,GreenLanternsales
hadbeeninamajordeclineatthetimeGreenArrowwasbroughtonascostar,and
theO'Neil/Adamsstoriesfailedtorevivethem.[8]GreenLanternwascanceledwith

Insharpcontrasttothesociallyrelevanttaleswhichprecededit,thisstorycentered
onemotionalthemes,withGreenArrowstrugglingtodealwiththeguiltofhaving
killedaman.[8]AfterwardsGreenArrowbeganappearinginsolostoriesrunas
backupsinActionComics,startingwith#421.ElliotS.Maggin,whohadmadehiscomicsdebutwithaGreen
ArrowstorypublishedinGreenLantern(vol.2)#87,wasGreenArrow'swriterforthenextseveralyears.[8]

In1976,theGreenLantern/GreenArrowtitlewasrelaunched,withoutthesociallyconsciousthemesofthe
originalseries,withO'NeilwritingandMikeGrelldrawing.AfterthetitlemovedtosoloGreenLanternstories,
soloGreenArrowstoriesbeganappearinginWorld'sFinestComics.Inhissoloseries,Oliverlandsajobasa
newspapercolumnist,whichallowshimtoarticulatehispoliticalbeliefsinamorepublicfield.InWorld'sFinest
#255(1979),QueenunsuccessfullyrunsforMayorofStarCity.

InMaythroughAugust1983,GreenArrowappearedforthefirsttimeinhisowncomicbook,afourissuelimited
series.[10]ThisminiseriesintroducedarunningrivalrybetweenGreenArrowandthesupervillainCountVertigo.

In1985,theEarthTwoGreenArrowdiesintheCrisisonInfiniteEarths,stillwearingredbootsandgloves.The
GoldenAgeEarth2characterhadbeenretconnedasatimelostmemberoftheoriginalSevenSoldiersofVictory
superheroteam,recoveredbytheJusticeLeagueandJusticeSociety.AftertheCrisis,theEarthTwoGreenArrow
andSpeedywereretconnedoutofexistencealtogether,giventheendofDC'sformermultiverse.

LongbowHunters/MikeGrellongoing

In1987,DCComicslaunchedthecharacterintoanewongoingtitleaspartoftheirmatureaudiencecomicline.
WrittenandillustratedbyMikeGrell,therevampwaslaunchedwithGreenArrow:TheLongbowHuntersmini
series.[11]Inthisthreeissueprestigeformatlimitedseries,aroutineadventureagainstagroupofdrugrunnersled
totragedyastheBlackCanarywascapturedandbrutallytortured.Inresponse,Olivermurdershisgirlfriend's
attackers.TheminiserieswouldalsointroducetheenigmaticfemaleJapanesearcher,Shado,whosefamilyhad
sufferedinaWorldWarIIinternmentcamp.ShadowouldlaterrapeOliver[12]andbecomepregnantbyhim,
producingasonnamedRobertafterhisfather.[13]

UnderGrell,GreenArrowwouldabandontheuseofhistrademarkgadgetarrowsandrelocatefromStarCityto
Seattle,Washington.AstheserieswaspartofDCComics'matureaudienceline,ittookonamoregritty,violent,
aswellasurbantone,withGreenArrowoftenusingdeadlyforceagainsthisenemies.Grellwrotetheseriesforthe
first80issues,downplayingthesuperheroaspectsofthecharacters:Oliverabandonedhismaskandwasnever

wereconceivedtoallowotherwriters(mostnotablyDennyO'Neil,whowrote
BatmanandthematureaudiencecomicTheQuestion)touseGreenArrow,Grell
wrotehimaslargelyisolatedfromtherestoftheDCUniversewhenotherDC
characterslikelongtimefriendHalJordan(alsoknownasGreenLantern)
appeared,theydidsoinstreetclothesandusedonlytheirciviliannames.[14]

Inplaceofthesuperherocommunity,Grellcreatedhisownsupportingcast.In
additiontoShado,GrellintroducedSeattlepoliceLieutenantJimCameron,who
wasdisgustedwithGreenArrow'svigilanteactions(includingkillingcriminals),
renegadeCIAagentGregOsborne,whobegantomonitorQueen'sactivities,as
wellasmercenaryEddieFyers,initiallyintroducedasQueen'sadversary,butlater

anddrawnbyartistJimAparo)wasremovedfromthe"MatureAudience"line
(whichhadevolvedinto"Vertigo")with#63,priortoGrell'sdepartureandGreen
Arrowbeganappearinginvarioussuperherotitlesasaguest:mostnotablyGreen
Lantern#47,whichhadOliveraidingGreenLanterninrescuinghislongtime
girlfriendCarolFerrisandherfamilyfromoneofHal'senemies,aswellasthe
1994DCComicsminiseriesZeroHour.InZeroHour,whereHalJordanseeksto
remaketheuniverseafterthetraumaofCoastCity'sdestructiondriveshimto
destroytheGreenLanternCorpstogainthepowertoremaketheuniverse,Queen
isforcedtoshoothisoldfriendatapivotalmoment.Nowtightlyintegratedinthe
DCUniverse,thecharacterConnorHawkewasintroducedandrevealedasOliver

In2000,OliverQueenisrevivedinanewseries,GreenArrow(vol.3),inthestory
arc"Quiver",writtenbyKevinSmithandillustratedbyPhilHesterandAnde
Parks.ItisrevealedthatHal'sresurrectionofOliver(seenontheverylastpageof
GreenArrow#137,thefinalissueoftheOliver/Connorongoingseries)wasin
realityadeliberatelyflawedone.InHal'sfinalhoursbeforesacrificinghislifeto
savetheEarthduring"TheFinalNight",HalspeakswithOliver'ssoulinthe
afterlife.ThetwoagreetobringbackaversionofOliverQueen:onewithoutasoul
(soOlivermayproperlystayinHeaven)andwithnomemoryoftheeventsofThe
LongbowHuntersminiseriesorofthesubsequenteventsthatfollowed,upuntil
hisdeath,Oliverreasoningthatthingswentwrongforhimaftertheeventsthat
drovehimtokillforthefirsttimeandfeelingthatthecopyofhimwasrestoredat
thebestpointinhislife.

Forsomeyears,thisresurrectedOliverlivesinStarCityasavigilantehero,
completelyundertheradarofhisothersuperherofriends,buteventuallyheis
PromotionalforGreen discoveredandlearnsthetruthofhisresurrection,leavingtheresurrectedOliver
Arrow(vol.3)#1cover.Art feelinguncertainabouthisstatenowthatheknowshehasnosoul.Hisresurrection
byMattWagner. iseventuallyusedbythegrandfatherofStanleyDoverinanattempttogainpower
overthemonsterthatDoveraccidentallyboundtohisgrandson,Doverintendingto
takeOliver'sbodypossibleonlyduetohislackofasoulandusehisaccesstotheJLA'sresourcestofindthe
monster.Attheclimaxofthestory,Oliver'ssoulreturnsfromheaven,reinhabitshisresurrectedearthlyformand
helpshissonConnorHawkefightahordeofdemons,thebodyofOliverhavingmadecontactwithhissouland
convincinghimtoreturntosavetheirson.DoverisdefeatedandactuallyconsumedbytheBeast,whothenleaves
ofhisownaccord.Oliveralsofindshimselfindependentlywealthyagain,asDoverhadtransferredallhisfinancial
assetstoOliverinanticipationoftakingoverhisbody.Healsopickedupanewsidekick,MiaDearden,who

Aftertheresurrectionstoryline,Smithwroteasecondandshorterarcinvolvingasuperpoweredserialkiller,
callinghimselfOnomatopoeia,whosoughttoclaimConnorashislatestvictim.SmiththenleftthetitleandBrad
Meltzertookoveraswriter.

Meltzer'ssinglestorylineforGreenArrowfeaturedOliverandhisformersidekick,RoyHarper,reunitingand
goingonacrosscountryroadtriptopickupoldpossessionsofOliver's,mostnotablyaspareGreenLantern
powerringentrustedtohimbyHalJordanmanyyearsearlier.ThestoryalsorevealedthatOliverknewallalong
thatConnorwashissonandwasevenpresentathisbirth,butthatOliverultimatelyabandonedConnorandhis
mother,becauseofhisfearoftheresponsibilitiesoffatherhood.Meltzer'sstorylinewouldcontinueintothemini
seriesGreenLantern:Rebirth,whichfeaturedOliver'sattemptstousetheringagainstSinestropresumeddeadfor

MeltzerwentontowritetheminiseriesIdentityCrisis,whichheavilyfeaturedGreenArrowasoneofthestory's

JuddWinicktookoverasGreenArrow'swriterandmademanychanges.MiaDearden,thenewSpeedy,was
revealedtobeHIVpositiveandattemptsweremadetoexpandGreenArrow'sRoguesGallerywithMerlynthe
archer,ConstantineDrakon,aswellasDannyBrickwell(theBrick)joiningthecastofexistingGreenArrow
villainssuchastheillusioncastingCountVertigoandtheenigmaticOnomatopoeia,thelatterofwhom,himself,
wasarelativelyrecentaddition.OtherDCvillains,suchastheRiddler,madeguestappearancesthroughouthis
run.

2006sawthetitle(alongwithotherDCcomicstitles)jump"OneYearLater"aftertheeventsinInfiniteCrisis.
Oliver,havingonceagainamassedalargepersonalfortune,isthenewlyelectedmayorofStarCity,continuinghis
fightforjusticebothonthestreetsandwithinthepoliticalsystem.[16]Healsohasanewcostume,whichappearsto
beacombinationoftheclassicNealAdamscostumeandtheMikeGrellLongbowHunterscostume.Inflashbacks,
itisrevealedthatOliversurvivedanearfatalattackduringtheeventsoftheInfiniteCrisis,aswellasusedhis
recuperationtimetoretrain.HeworkswithseveralexpertinstructorsincludingasenseiknownasNatas,whoalso
trainedDeathstroke,andbecomesproficientinseveralmartialartsincludingtheuseofswords,whichhemakes
useofonoccasionduringthistime.Heiseventuallyforcedtoresignfromhispositionasmayorafterascandal
wherehelearnsthathehadbeensecretlyfundingtheOutsiders,essentiallyabountyhunterteamatthispointin

overboardandwashesuponanislandwherehelearnsofasmugglingoperation.Uponwitnessingtheinhabitants'

Aftertheendoftheongoingseries,DCComicspublishedafourpartbimonthlyBlackCanaryminiseriesin
whichGreenArrowteamedupwithBlackCanarytohelpgetSinintoschoolandestablishanewlife.Thisseries
concludedwiththeBlackCanaryacceptinghisproposal.ThisresultedinDCComicspublishingthree

JusticeLeaguecommunityofheroes.AftertrickingtheJusticeLeagueintoreleasinghim,GreenArrowtrackshim
downtohishiddenlairandkillshimwithasinglearrowrightbetweentheeyes.[20]

Thismurder,committedinsecret,iswhatOliverconsidersjusticeforthebombings(whichalsocostthelifeof
LianHarper,RoyHarper's(RedArrow)daughter,whowaskilledinthebombingofStarCity)andthis
immediatelyleadsintotheRiseandFallstoryline,inwhichOliverobsessivelyhuntsothersupervillainsallied
withPrometheusduringtherecentevents,[21]includingPrometheus'sformerallieswhowereinvolvedinthe
bombing.WhenhisJLAcomradeslearnofthisplot,theyconfrontGreenArrowandherealizeshehascrosseda
lineandturnshimselfin:BlackCanaryreturnsherweddingringanddeclarestheirmarriageover.TheGreen
Arrow/BlackCanaryseriesendsduringthisstoryarc,aswellasinthepagesofJusticeLeague:RiseandFall

FollowingtheeventsofBlackestNight,DeadmanwasbroughttotheruinsofStarCitybyhiswhitering.Powered
bytheentityoflifeonEarth,theringcreatedavastgreenforest,thatinstantlygrewinthepresenceofthewhite
light,inmuchofwhatremainedofStarCity.[23]

UnbeknownsttothepopulaceofStarCity,GreenArrowreturnsandliveswithinthenewforest,tryinghisbestto
protectacitystillreelingfromthedeathanddestructionofPrometheus'sattacks.Withthelawbreakingdownand
numerouspublicfiguresbeingmurdered,anewownerofQueenIndustries,theresultofahostiletakeover,arrives
toenforcepeaceandrebuildthecity.[24]Thisselfproclaimed'Queen'hasaconnectiontoGreenArrow'sfatherand
claimstobeupholdingtheQueenfamilylegacywhereOliverfailed.[25]
