Title: The Job Satisfaction-Job Performance Relationship: A Qualitative and
Quantitative Review
Author: Timothy A. Judge University of Iowa
Carl J. Thoresen Tulane University
Joyce E. Bono University of Iowa
Gregory K. Patton University of North Dakota
Summary:
A qualitative review showing 7 models were presented in the study showing
relationships between job satisfaction and job performance. The first model states
that job satisfaction causes job performance which poses a causal effect of the
former to the latter. The second model states that job performance causes job
satisfaction wherein we see how attitude is linked to behavior in social psychology
researches. On the third model, it was inferred that job satisfaction and job
performance are reciprocally related which was further discussed through five
related studies that have investigated the possibility of a reciprocal relationship
between the two variables. The fourth model insisted that the relationship between
the two is spurious in which a correlation can be observed between them due to a
third, unmeasurable variable. The fifth model says that the relationship between the
variables is moderated by other variables. Opposite to the previous models, the
sixth model states that there is no relationship between job satisfaction and job
performance where it is treated as two separate variables without any direct
relationship with one another. Lastly, the seventh model states that there are
alternative conceptualizations of job satisfaction and/or job performance.
