IS FISHING CRUEL?

R.S.P.C.A. In Doubt ZANE GREY CONTROVERSY.

SYDNEY. Thursday.

While deploring that any living crea ture should be subjected to any form or degree of cruelty whatsoever
the Council of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to-

day found difficulty in coming to any definite conclusion as to whether or not "there is cruelty associated
with the capture and destruction of big game fish, because of the variance of expert opinion on the
subject." The council also determined that: "Owing to the absence of any provision in any act of the
legislation this State for the protection of fish against any form or degree of cruelty, no legal ac tion by the
society appears possible." When the American novelist (Zane Grey) recently began sword fishing on the
South Coast, protests were entered by a number of persons that the methods adopted caused pain to the
fish, and the society was asked to take action. The meeting of the council held to day was a special one,
called to con sider the position.
