"This is a compendium of theories of he shape of the Earth, along with a great deal of 'Earth Mystery' lore. R chly illustrated, the Book of Earths includes many unusual theories, inclu ing Columbus' idea that the Earth is literally pear-shaped, modern theo ies that the Earth was originally tetrahedral, and so on. Kenton als covers many traditional theories including the ancient Babylonians a d Egyptians, Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, and those of the Peruvi ns, Aztecs and Mongols. She also discusses modern alternative theorie such as that of Reed and Koresh. Strangely enough, she misses or igno es the modern flat earth theory of Rowbotham. This is the only apparent mission in this definitive study.

THIS BOOK OF EA THS began years ago, with a single little figure of Earth taken from what old book I do not know. For a long time it lay by itself; then an ther, come upon by chance, was laid beside it; and still others as I happene on them, always by chance. Old odd maps joined the casual collection-- aps of the Earth, the Moon, the heavens. It was never a collection in the usual sense of the word, because it was so casual; but, such as it was, it is the origin of this book. For it occurred to me, not long ago, that it wou Id e "fu n" to put them all togethe r, and ma ny othe rs with the m, chose n to fill in the ga ps of the origina I grou p.

Luckily for the fun of it, the search about to begin would not be limited to what we know about th Earth, else it would have ended before it began; for we live in a universe of which we know little, and on a planet of which we know perhaps less. I would include not only what we know, or think today we know, but also ny-thing that has been believed or felt or no more than "guessed" to be th picture of the Earth and its place in the universe. It would include not on y science, modern and ancient, but tradition, the older the better; diagra s or pictures based on little more than folk-lore; cosmogonies of religion great and small; cosmogonies of philosophers, of poets, and of savages. I would gather together pictured theories, guesses, hypotheses, or merely fl ghts of pu re imagination, whether "true" or "fa Ise" to-day; since history te ches us nothing if it does not teach us that one centu ry's fa Ise doctrine s another centu ry' s truth, a nd that the mista kes of any age or race are quit as illuminating as any "truth" by which it lived.

Th is collection of pict res, therefore, wou Id not be "scie ntific," not "selected" to prove one hing or to disprove another, not prejudged by any standard but that of a ecord told in pictures and diagrams of what man has guessed this Earth t be ever since he first began to wonder what the figure of the body was on which he lived. It would be free play through sou rces, once those so rces we re discovered; play un ha mpered by any necessity for judgment r criticism, since what was sought was the record only.

And so the search began, and t e story of the search is personally as interesting as what it uncovered. t would be endless--that was clear from the beginning, and so it must b made deliberately brief. It could not include everything, even if "eve hing" came promptly to the surface. But there were high lights in the reco d, and these began to show dimly from the first. The rest was a matter of lazing an unpathed trail that would lead to the goal--the record; but that ust allow for twists and turns, by-paths, now and then blind alleys in whic often, as it proved, lurked the "tip" that had been lacking when one turned into them.

More a nd more, as the sea rch we t on, a nd one figu re of Ea rth was added to another, it seemed worth wile to bring a large number of them together. I nevita bly, in such a c lIection of ma n 's atte mpts to d raw the planet on which we live and its rei tions to the heavenly bodies by which it is su rrou nded, the re wou Id be su rprising simil itudes, ide ntifications, recognitions, even a queer unity. here would be, too, in such a collection, enormous differences, opportuni y for endless comparison and endless wondering over the figures imag d by those supremely courageous men, the questioners of Space.

They are the men--anywhere, at any time--who have looked up at the unanswering heavens, and asked, "What and whence and why are those lights in the sky?" who have look d down at the unanswering Earth, and asked, "What is th is la nd that fore er gives everyth i ng--eve n to me my life, and forever takes everything--e en from me my life? What are these waters around it that sustain its Ii e and mine? this fire within it that pours through its mountain tops and hats its boiling springs, whose spark lies still within the rock and wood fr m which my father's fathers first struck out their own first fire? What is t is air I breathe that is around the Earth and within it, in its secret caves? hat is Earth? And what am I?"

They are the men who have ques ioned not idly but unceasingly; knowing all the while that to the tiny ques ioner below there is no great Answerer above; that any answer to the qu stions born of the speck in space that is man, must be born in its turn just his questions; nothing more--but noth ing less. The re is no eq u ipme t for th is lone Iy quest; there is on Iy ma n the questioner and the univers --the Great Question; the answer lies within man himself. If ever we 0 ce realise this, we can never call them anything but supreme adventurer --those men curious enough to wonder enough to question enough to gu ss at last boldly enough to say, "Perhaps

For guessw rk is the beginning and the end of knowledge--man's own answers to is own questions. They may be right or wrong, but they are his. To-day we ive scientific "guesses" a statelier title; we call them hypotheses; they are nothing more than guesses shot into still un-answering Space. The" hypot esis," for instance, that the Ea rth is a n isla nd, pia in, mou nta i n, or whateve , was first advanced when the first man of the first race drew the first fig re of Earth. The "guess"--only that--that the figure of Earth is an oblate pheroid is of our own era. Our hypotheses are continually changing; 0 e supplants another, and is in its turn discarded for a new--or an old--one and this has been the history of knowledge ever since that remote an notable day when the first brain, by sheer pressure of question i ng focused in a poi nt that exploded into a "guess." It is the process of i duced thinking that has carried man on; the heavens and the Earth have ontinued to revolve whether his answers are right or wrong.

Man could not equip himself for this quest in Space. But he had been equipped, a er a fashion. He had a few resources, a few means.

First of all, long before science told him that he had within his body vestiges of II the life-strata of the world, he had a vague knowledge that he is an in egral part of the universe. And, because he is a part of the universe, h had a vague knowledge of truth, or of segments of truth. He had numbe s, he had signs, he had characters, he had symbols, all of these drawn in th heavens before he drew them on Earth. He had words. He had the capacit to be curious, the capacity to wonder, the capacity to draw analogies b tween seemingly unrelated things. From this scant handful of means, his acuity for guesswork developed. This is the whole story of all his percepti ns of the universe and of his planet. For he has continuously dared the g eat adventure, and has returned sometimes with pure gold.

THE BELIE F HAT TH E U NIVE RSE is composed of five Great Eleme nts is untracea Iy old. Even the savage knows very well four of these elements, ater, Air, Fire, and Earth, and has a vague sense of the fifth, Ether, or Sp ceo From varying combinations of these five elemental substances, the a cients believed, all of the phenomena of Nature were formed. Earth itself was composed, in the last analysis, of these five. Man also, they believe ,was a unique compound of these elements, and was, at death, resolved b ck into them. Each of these great "Creatu res," as they were called, was s mbolised by a certain shape, and the total figure of the five different form, superimposed on one another in a regular order, is the stu pa of Ch ina an Ind ia, the sotoba or go-ri n of J a pa n, the" Five-circle" or "Five-zone" or "Fi e-blossom" funeral stone to be found everywhere in the Orient. The cube represents the Earth or stable foundation on which all builds; the sphere represents water; the pyramid or triangular tongue, fire or the elements i motion; the crescent or inverted vault of the sky, air or wi nd; the acu mi na ed sphere or body-pyri-form, ethe r ta pering into Space.
