2010 Aug 2013
Develop computational visualization methods for the exploratory analysis of high-dimensional data
from biomedical imaging. Research to develop robust and adaptive systems for computer-aided
analysis and visualization with pattern recognition, machine learning and image
processing/computer vision approaches. Application areas range from fMRI, MRI mammography
and Computer Tomography. Use computational radiology to help bridge the gap between
fundamental engineering research and clinical practice.
Development of Pseudo (Virtual) Mammography from Breast MRI: Utilize image
processing techniques such as 3D Perspective Reconstruction, Filtering, Region Growing,
Segmentation, Otsu's Method, K-means, Edge Detection and Morphological methods to develop
algorithms transforming Breast MRI to Pseudo (Virtual) Mammography.

Clinical Implementation of Micro-CT for Intra-Operative Guidance in Oncoplastic
Resections of Breast Cancer: To provide intraoperative feedback to breast surgeon on
locations of the positive/close margins in the lump of tissue excised during lumpectomy, thus
allowing for prompt re-excision during the same procedure and prevent additional surgery
(presently in 3050% range), we designed, constructed and started testing a device for micro-
CT and micro-MRI imaging of lumpectomy specimens. We performed micro-CT imaging of
lumpectomy specimen phantom and determined the positive/close margin localization errors.
We conclude that it could be possible to provide intraoperative feedback to surgeon allowing
immediate correction of the problem without the need for an additional surgery days later.
