INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

There is enough on earth for everybodys need, but not for everybodys

greed( Mahatma Gandhi)

In our society now a day, more specifically in Cebu City, we are facing different

kind of calamities that really affect in every individual in our society, like floods because

of throwing of garbage anywhere. Improper disposal of waste is the big problem in Cebu

City, no matter what the government implemented but still some consumer didnt follow.

Some businessman operates sustainable businesses to eliminate the environmental

harm caused by the production and consumption of their goods. Sustainable business

leaders also take into account the life cycle costs for the items they produce. There

inputs costs must be considered in regards to regulations, energy use, storage, and

disposal. In United States, they make a program titled Designing for the environment

(DFE) also called as United States Environmental Protection Agency created in 1992, is

also an element of sustainable business that works to prevent pollution. This process

enables users to consider the potential environmental impacts of a product and the

process used to make that product. The Friends for the Earth International (FoEI) is an

international environmental organization dedicated to preserving the health and diversity

of the planet for future generation. This helps to regulate the impact of the garbage in the

society. In Cebu City, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Trade and

Industry collaborated with other government agencies enhancing competitiveness of

1
businesses by adopting environment friendly and climate smart strategies. They

encourage the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs) to implement the changes

necessary to go green.

Green environmental and Eco-marketing is part of the new marketing approaches

which do not just refocus, adjust or enhance existing marketing thinking and practice. But

seek to challenge those approaches and provide a substantially different perspective.

Green Marketing is just a simple word but its a hard task to do. In US they implement

Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS), describes an integrated, rapidly

growing market that appeal to consumers whose sense of environmental and social

responsibility influences their purchase decisions. It enables to promote awareness to the

people to be responsible in their society. In the Philippines more specifically in Cebu

City, they encourage every individual to Go Green Philippines, helps people to be aware,

to preserve the natural environment.

So, the Eco house, located in Talamban, is the first sustainable and self-sufficient

house in Cebu and in the entire Philippines. Engr. Nestor Archival a professional

electrical engineer and advocate of nature build his own green house and promote

sustainable development in Cebu City and entire Philippines.

Engr. Nestor Archival promote this kind of program because he noticed that the

world, especially in Cebu City facing increasing environmental problems and mankind

desperate to lessen this unfortunate situation in Cebu City. As a result, corporations and

individuals are looking in different ways to contribute a cleaner and greener environment.

2
The Archival family dedicated themselves to going green by following the three

Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. It seems simple but it simple enough that needs dedication

and a creative mind to achieve all three (according to Engr. Archival). They open an eco-

house, the area is divided into different sections: like the goatery (where you can feed and

pet goats), vermin compost beds (vermin bisexual worms whose job is to help convert

organic wastes into nutrient rich vermicast a.k.a fertilizers).

They also have mickey mouse shaped lagoon and two more pools filled with

rain water as water catchment. They accumulated water to be used to flush toilets, to

wash clothes and plates, and to water the plants. They also have a free environmental

lecture after the tour.

The Archivals have created a true Cebuano legacy and, most importantly, taught

as valuable lesson giving back to nature: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Even down to the

useless piece of scrap, Engr. Archival found ways to turn garbage into something useful.

The furniture was styled with recycled scraps such PVC pipes, tetra packs, empty cans,

plastic cups, crushed eggshells, cable spools, wine bottles and empty bullet shells.

The researchers chose this topic in order to evaluate what are the opportunities

and challenges that the researcher would encounter after the studies and for the upcoming

generations. Researchers are Marketing Management students who are willing to help the

environment and to promote sustainable development in Cebu City, In order to save

mother earth from all the disaster that citizens facing right now.

3
Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the marketing strategies of Archival Eco-house in

Talamban Cebu City, Philippines, of what opportunities that researcher can get from three

Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle, in Cebu City. This study tends to promote product

innovation through trash. To let them aware how useful its to have a proper segregation

of trash by applying the three Rs reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Research Objectives

1 To get the profile of the respondents.

1.1 Name

1.2 Age

1.3 Gender

1.4 Position

2.) How the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) are being applied and practiced?

2.1 Reduce

2.2 Reuse

2.3 Recycle

3.) How to improve current Marketing Strategies using the 4P's of Marketing.

4.1 Product

4.2 Place

4.3 Price

4.4 Promotion

4
5.) Base on the findings of the studies, what strategies can be propose to improve the current

strategies of the company.

Considerably, this will help the researcher in determining the different aspects that

will be connected to the review related literature. After identifying those aspects, the

researcher will be gathering data to support those problems that need appropriate

clarifications. After making the research, the researchers are ready to give conclusions

and recommendations.

Statement of Assumption

As a group we have this intuition that participating in a green and sustainable

development projects will make Cebu, City a nature friendly and ideal place to live.

Climate change is a huge problem in our society now a days, it refers to the increase of

normal temperature in the surface of the earth. Formulating ideas towards a sustainable

community will help solve the problem and will give opportunities to people toward

change specially those who are living in Talamban Cebu, City. By giving the researchers

broader knowledge about sustainability that will help understands and creates more

useful ideas all throughout.

Statement of Hypothesis

Through innovation of products with trash as raw materials is a very good solution

for a greener and cleaner society. With that idea we could not only reduce trash we could

also benefit from it by using trash as a resources, a very abundant resources. With

advertising we could introduce the positive effect of this projects we could help them

5
realize that this could be a way for them to save mother earth and benefit from a product

as well. So the innovation and advertising of new product from trash is a great way to

save earth with green and honest purpose to its consumers and beneficiaries.

Significance of the Study

Students - By the study it help us students what we will go to do after we graduate. It

gives us an option in choosing the right work that will fit in our attitude or personality. It

is also an opportunity to develop ourselves and became successful someday.

Customers - The research will give knowledge to the customers on how the Eco House

works by using 3rs reduce; reuse and recycle and it could also them in their own

business.

Entrepreneur - for the labor market and the economy in general. We all know that

entrepreneurs one of the most influential people in the industry. It will give them idea to

create work and to boost the economy. It will help to ready their selves to fight against

other business competitors.

6
Scope and Limitations of the Study

Basically, the scope of conducting this research encapsulates the whole boundary

of Cebu City. This City gives the researchers more information about the environmental

aspects of promoting a green environment. In promoting the 3rs (reuse, reduce, and

recycle) the researchers encountered a lot of possible ideas that can help the environment.

Going deeper in our brain storming, the researchers narrowed their minds to the specific

environmental industries that are promoting the 3rs. The researchers definitely found the

right industry that is thoroughly use the three R s which is the Archival Eco-house that is

very qualified to be studied. The duration of this research is good for one semester.

Although it would be a good research, to know more but we are constraint by a limited

time that we have.

During the research conducted two industries were interview and surveyed, but

definitely the main topic of the study is the eco-house. The researchers were happily able

to gather data from the one of the industries and interviewed the eco-house. During the

field research, industries such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources

were very proactive in answering and sharing their ideas towards a green environment.

Researchers were able to interview the Eco-house and able to gathered information that is

essential for the environment. From this, the researchers were able to grab opportunities

in promoting the green environment and take note of it as one of the findings.

From the data gathered, it would take a lot of time and process in order to comply

it according to scheduled. Researchers would like to give time and effort for this research

topic knowing it would be beneficial for the environment. And therefore the researchers

are giving the best not just to get good grades but also share facts about the eco-house.

7
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Advertising - the act or practice of calling public attention to one's product, service,

need, etc., especially by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or

television, on billboards, etc. to get customer

Marketing - the action or business of promoting and selling products or services,

including market research and advertising.

Product - A good, idea, method, information, object or service created as a result of a

process and a serves a need or satisfies a want. Researchers - diligent and systematic

inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts, theories,

applications, etc.

Sustainability - A state in which the demands placed on the environment can be met

without reducing its capacity to allow all people to live well, now and in the future.

Innovation - Defined simply as a "new idea, device, or method. However, innovation is

often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements,

articulated needs, or existing market needs

8

THEORITICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Review of Related Literature

The world is facing increasing environmental problems and mankind is desperate

to lessen these plights. As a result, corporations and independents are looking at different

ways to contribute to a cleaner and greener world. A key ingredient is passion and hard

work. Its clear that if you have enough of both, you can build your own green house and

even be famous for it. This is exactly what Engr. Nestor Archival did.

A professional electrical engineer and advocate of nature, Engr. Archival built his

own Eco-House. As Chair of the Cebu City Government Committee on Environment, he

implemented and demonstrated how environmental green living could be made possible.

The Eco-house is a showcase of manifold green initiatives; recycling schemes and

recycled waste products, water treatment and solid waste management, energized in bio

gas digested, vermin composting and organic food production.

The lusty vegetable garden and lagoon add to the learning experience of tourists,

as well as students and environment advocates. The house itself is made of recycled and

indigenous materials, vivified by a renewal energy coming from fresh rainwater

catchment. Dagooc, G ( 2016 January, 09) Archival Eco House http://www.philstar.com/)

Inside Engr. Archivals Eco-house, it is designed in such a way to naturally cool

and heat itself thus lessening the need for electricitywhich explains the installation of

big and small windows as well as the skylight. Artistic murals, heavenly bodies and

aquatic creatures, grace the first floor and the receiving area exudes the beauty of the

11
underwater world with its cool blue hues a contrast to the sunny second floor of the

building with pastel shades and wisps of clouds for the sky. Even down to the useless

piece of scrap, Engr. Archival found ways to turn garbage into something useful. The

furniture was styled with recycled scraps such as PVC pipes, tetra packs, empty cans,

plastic cups, crushed eggshells, cable spools, wine bottles and empty bullet shells.

In this world of iPhone's and iPad's, a trip to the Eco-house is perfect for the

young ones to appreciate the beauty of backyard. Its the ideal place to get inspired with

artistic ideas by turning trash into something useful (you may find yourself rummaging

your trash bin later for empty bottles to start a DIY project of your own).

The Archivals have created a true Cebuano legacy and, most importantly, taught us

a valuable lesson on giving back to nature: reduce, reuse and recycle. Ask yourself what

you can give back to Mother Earth. You can start looking for answers in your own yard. It

all starts at home.

Engr. Archival is not only concerned with electricity conservation but with water

conservation as well. He installed roof water catchments, a fish pond and a connector at

the kitchen leading to a block-making facility. As for the waste management, the Eco-

house boasts of their waste recycling programs. Bottles, plastics, Styrofoam and tin cans

can be found anywhere you can't imagine they would be in a house.

Theoretical Framework

12
Figure 2.1

The 4 Ps of Marketing The Marketing Mix strategies

The term marketing mix was coined in the early 1950s by Neil Borden in his

American Marketing Association presidential address. This is one of the preliminary

knowledge every marketer must have and is considered to be the basics of every

marketing theory, which emerged henceforth.

The basic major marketing management decisions can be classified in one of the

following four categories, namely Product, Price, Place (distribution) and Promotion.

Product: It is the tangible object or an intangible service that is getting marketed through

the program. Tangible products may be items like consumer goods (Toothpaste, Soaps,

13
Shampoos) or consumer durables (Watches, IPods). Intangible products are service based

like the tourism industry and information technology based services or codes-based

products like cellphone load and credits. Product design which leads to the product

attributes is the most important factor. However packaging also needs to be taken into

consideration while deciding this factor. Every product is subject to a life-cycle including

a growth phase followed by an eventual period of decline as the product approaches

market saturation. To retain its competitiveness in the market, continuous product

extensions though innovation and thus differentiation is required and is one of the

strategies to differentiate a product from its competitors.

Price : The price is the simply amount a customer pays for the product. If the price

outweigh the perceived benefits for an individual, the perceived value of the offering will

be low and it will be unlikely to be adopted, but if the benefits are perceived as greater

than their costs, chances of trial and adoption of the product is much greater.

Place: Place represents the location where a product can be purchased. It is often referred

to as the distribution channel. This may include any physical store (supermarket,

departmental stores) as well as virtual stores (e-markets and e-malls) on the Internet. This

is crucial as this provides the place utility to the consumer, which often becomes a

deciding factor for the purchase of many products across multiple product categories.

Promotion: This represents all of the communications that a marketer may use in the

marketplace to increase awareness about the product and its benefits to the target

segment. Promotion has four distinct elements: advertising, public relations, personal

selling and sales promotion. Advertising may include using specialty packaging to

showcase products, utilizing promotional products for your company, or online ads. A

14
certain amount of crossover occurs when promotion uses the four principal elements

together (e.g in film promotion). Sales staff often plays a major role in promotion of a

product.

Three Rs ( Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)

Figure 2.2

Reduce

The concept of reducing what is produced and what is consumed is essential to the

waste hierarchy. The logic behind it is simple to understand if there is less waste, then

there is less to recycle or reuse. The process of reducing begins with an examination of

what you are using, and what it is used for.

Reuse

15
You may have a box of things you keep that are broken or that you dont have a use

for that you hang on to in-case you find another use for them; or you may find bargains

on old furniture or go trash picking and get things that you can refinish in either case

you are working towards reusing the item. Learning to reuse items, or re-purpose them

for a use different then what they are intended for is essential in waste hierarchy.

Recycle

The last stage of the waste hierarchy is to recycle. To recycle something means

that it will be transformed again into a raw material that can be shaped into a new item.

There are very few materials on the earth that cannot be recycled. One of the issues

facing communities that want to become more involved with a recycling effort is that

while the relying collection and sorting process may be affordable to implement, there

still has to be a facility to receive and transform the discarded waste into a raw material.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research methodology used in the study. The research

environment pertains where the research setting took place and the like, the respondents

which could benefit the research/study. The instruments used to collect the data,

including the methods implemented to maintain validity and reliability of the instruments

are describe. The procedures on how the data is collected and on how we used the data

we have collected.

Research Environment

This study started in a Marketing Class at the University of San Carlos.

Researcher thought of a study that could help solve major problems that our society is

facing right now, one of the example is Global Warming. This study is conducted at

Archival Eco-house located in Talamban Cebu City, Philippines.

Figure 3.1

Research Respondents

17
In choosing our respondents, researchers divided the group of people within the

Eco-house according to their position. The only problem with some of the respondents,

caretakers doesnt know what could be the beneficial effects of the Eco-house, because

some of them are just there to watch and guard the house. Not just mainly the agricultural

related individual are interviewed, researchers also made a survey to the students,

professional, and unprofessional workers. The Researchers respondents most focus on the

Head manager or the owner of the Eco-house and the other persons behind of this

wonderful success in promoting renewable materials.

Research Instruments

In making this research, he researcher used gadgets to gather more information, as

well as survey questionnaires that helped in assessing the respondents. The researcher

also used self-administered questionnaire in gathering data. The content of the

questionnaire is all about the Objectives of the Research Study most especially the three

Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). This questionnaire served as the guide and key answer of the

research problem. The purpose of our research is to understand why the three Rs (reduce,

reuse, recycle) are very important.

Research Procedure

The researcher had to consider other things like following the tips and processes

in doing a research study. Procedure must be follow in order to come up a successful

output. In choosing this topic researchers also consider each other ideas and from those

ideas, they chose the best one that will get a good impact to the readers. Researchers use

18
clear reference for the reader to find the original cited publications. Researchers also use

Delphi Technique (collect research ideas & distribute to the member of the group).

Researchers apply the four (4) areas in developing research topic Utility, Universal,

Innovation, and Solvability.

Gathering of Data

Researchers were able to gather data from the Archival Eco House. Researchers

gave questionnaires to get as full details on how the Eco House works and the

maintenance of the place. The owner Engr. Archival made it a point to install turbines, a

bio-gas facility, and solar panels that help sustain the needs for electricity. As for the

waste management, the Eco-house boasts their waste recycling programs. Bottles,

plastics, styrofoam and tin cans can be found everywhere you can't imagine they would

be in the house.

Treatment of the Data

All data collected were analyzed and were treated confidentially. From the

questionnaire, the demographic data of the entire respondent were gathered. Responses

that identified workers perceived skills and experiences and the number of hours spent on

asynchronous reflective practice and discussion activities were collected, scored and

tallied.

The Statistical Tool

19
In order to get the percentage of the data researchers use Slovens Formula:

F / n (100) = % Percentage

f- The number of people related a specific answers

n Total number of respondents and choices provided

(100) to determine the position in a percentile rank

% Percentage Position of data in a percentile rank

Weighted Average

Researcher used the weighted average to determine the weight of the choices

provided in the survey questionnaires.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

The preceding chapter contains the results of our survey. This chapter present all

gathered data, analyze and interpret from the instruments used in this study. This also

contains the frequency table that will identify the perspective of the customers and the

staff of Archival Eco-House on collecting trash and what they do with it. This will help in

knowing the different aspects in relation with the three Rs (reduce, recycle, reuse).

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

Based on the data we gathered from the respondents which where the employees

and staffs in the Archival Eco-house, mostly of them were maintenance who works in the

Eco-house. Most of them are with Engr. Nestor Archival in this business for more than 5

years. The Respondents' firm age is mostly above 15 years old. 70% of the Eco-house is

composed of maintenance's that usually engage in the production area. They were the

ones who handle the transformation of waste to well-organized and renewable ones.

While the 30% were in their office together with the owner Engr. Nestor Archival in the

management of their production to increase their marketing sustainability.

The primary goal of the respondents is to promote an innovative way in order to

reduce those unwanted garbage's near the vicinity, mainly focuses in Talamban Cebu

areas. They are asking the different garbage in the nearby household and barangays to be

use in the production. Due to this strategy, they already reducing the garbage and make it

into a renewable one. At the same time they also promote a zero waste management.

Along in promoting an innovative way to reduce the waste in the society, same

time it can achieve a go green environment. With their innovative way, the researchers

discovered that those waste woods were made into new furnitures, chairs and tables are

use not just use to increase their market stability and marketing accountability; it is also

definitely given as a scholarship to the Eco-house scholars.

28
Because they are conscious about the harmful danger if their product would

failed, this is going to decrease their companys credibility. That is why the scholarships

they gave to those unfortunate children are coming from Engr. Nestor Archivals' own

pocket money. It is definitely coming from his assets and liabilities and his funds that he

receive when he was still in the Municipality Board of Cabinets.

Along their business there is no competition, because they were just the only one

who makes such innovative ways for the environment. In line with the difficulties of their

company, they only difficulty for them to conquer is when they still have to ask the waste

from coming from the vicinity.

The company's primary business strategy has been a great idea in adapting the

change in our environment. Not just by means of technology but also they let their

imaginative minds works. As we are going to rate the strength level of the Eco-house, the

ratings would be from 5-3. 5 would be coming from their ideas in promoting innovative

ways for the environment. 4 could be coming from their contributions to the unfortunate

children just to be able to achieve an educational attainment. And lastly, 3 for making

their products not to be market although we believe that their products were that

sustainable and innovative.

29
Conclusion

The problem of waste management can be minimized by broaden the peoples

minds to be able to come up with a sustainable green environment. Organized and well-

planned of segregation can be used in order to lessen these wastes nowadays. Researchers

definitely came up to an idea of having a 3R plan of minimizing these wastes. Reuse,

Reduce, and Recycle is a better solution to the growing pollution coming from the

different waste in the surroundings. Archival Eco-house is one of the successful business

innovations that promote these 3Rs. Researchers have proven that Archival Eco-house

can be a great model in making this product innovation possible. From the different

waste, they are able to make up a zero waste products. The different waste coming from

the vicinity of Cebu City is made to an innovative one. The decayed fruits, vegetables,

plants and other biodegradable garbages are being decomposed naturally by worms. This

is done through vermin composting, this made an effective fertilizer to the plants. The

plastics waste is cut into smaller desired pieces and is mix with cement has been made

into an innovative floor bricks and hollow blocks. Plastics are the long lasting material

that is hard to decompose, because of this idea they came up to add desired plastic pieces

in making bricks instead of sand. In terms of waste, wastes from the animals are made

into renewable fuel. Fuel is used to cook in replacement for liquefied petroleum gases.

They also consider getting solar energy in absence of electricity, in addition to solar

energy; they created a jeepney run by solar energy, which they call E-Jeepney. These are

just some ideas that have been created in order to achieve a healthy green environment.

This should be it; a greater factor to lessen the pollution, giving importance to the

environment with just a single idea encapsulates an Eco friendly house. Not just being

30
innovative, it helps us learn the essence of reducing, reusing and recycle those unwanted

trashes near us. By these, people can definitely earn a living. Make the most of these

trashes into money by selling some of the finished goods coming from these waste

materials. An imaginative mind produces an innovative product that comprises business

sustainability.

Recommendation

The following recommendations are offered related from the 3r's promoted by the

Archival Eco-house that can help enhance your product sustainability as well as your

market stability:

Given the chance to visit Archival Eco-house, gave the researchers the knowledge

on how to deal with the garbage by the use of the 3r's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. First,

the waste coming from the vicinity, why not Engr. Archival assign person in every

Barangay to collect their trash and give it directly to the Eco-house. Second, the Eco-

house should double the number of their workers in carpentry, furnishing and assembling

the product, not just a single handed person in one area of work to be done. Third, for

visitors to have an easy access in going to the venue there should be a larger signage

within the corner of the street. Fourth, in order to have a nice and well-organized

treatment to the visitors, those E-jeepneys they are proudly made out from solar energy

can be a means of transportation by those visitors whom that do not have vehicles.
