Some Shuls have a 2nd reading of xFkf zW x R in the afternoon for the women who
couldnt come and hear xFkf zW x R in the morning.
VII. dkxa ila - A special dk xA is not made when fulfilling the obligation of zii g n zxi k f
wln
r, because a dk xA is not made on a Mitzvah of dz g y d-destruction.
(hk:dtxz g"dk)
VIII. dz `i
x w To fulfill the Mitzvah, the `xew lra must read every word of xFkf zW x R
clearly and each congregant must hear and pay attention to every word.
IX. z`vl dpeek - In addition, the congregation has to have in mind to be Yotzai the
zFkxA and the reading, and the `xew lra and Oleh have to have in mind to be Motzi
the congregation.
X. xkf or xkf - There is doubt if the proper reading of the word wln r xkf z` is xkf or
xkf . Therefore, even though the Halacha follows the opinion of xkf , nevertheless
the Minhag in many Shuls is to say both xkf and xkf by reading the word or Pasuk
twice.
XI. `xewd in - Since most hold that the reading of xekf zy x t is a Torah obligation,
therefore one who is Motzi others must be obligated himself, i.e. an adult.
Hence, a child (and possibly even a Bar Mitzvah boy) should not be the `xew lra to
read xekf zy x t.
XII. dlerd in - Similarly, many hold that a child should not be given the Aliyah of zW x R
xFkf since the Oleh must be Motzi the congregation with the zFkxA.
XIII. Most have the Minhag that the Rav of the Shul gets the Aliyah of xFkf zW
x R.
17. Remember what Amalek did to you by the way, when you came forth out of Egypt;
18. How he met you by the way, and struck at your rear, all who were feeble behind you, when you were
faint and weary; and he did not fear God.
19. Therefore it shall be, when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around, in
the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance to possess, that you shall blot out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget it.

I. g y`x Even though the calendar year begins with dpy d y`x, (1st and 2nd day of
miy c
ixW Y ), nevertheless, when naming or counting the months, the Torah requires us to
refer to oqip as the "1st month", xii` as the "2nd month", oeiq as the "3rd month" and so
on. When the months are mentioned in Tanach, they are also referred to as the 1 st, 2nd,
3rd etc. starting from oqip. Hence the month of oqip is also called oFW`x d Wc g-the 1st
month.
II. oFW`x d Wc g - The Torah chose oqip to be referred to as the "1st month", to show its
importance and to commemorate the great exodus of mixv n z`i
v
i, which was the
beginning and the birth of l` xU
i llM as Hashem's nation.
III. oqip - The formal names of oqip, xii`, oeiq etc. were not used until after the Jews were
exiled to laa (Babylon) after the destruction of the 1st Wcw n d ziA. These Babylonian
names were later adopted, to commemorate l` xU i llM's
exodus from laa and return to
l` xU
i ux`.
IV. aia `
d yc g - The month of oqip is also called aia ` d ycg-the month of spring. (The name
oqi
p also suggests the meaning of spring, in that the similar word ovip means a flower bud.)
V. dpy d xeair - The significance of oqip being referred to as aia ` d Wcg, is it being the
source of oic zias obligation of dpy d xeair-creating
a leap year.
VI. The average lunar year has 354 days. In contrast, an average solar year (sun year) has 365 days.
Hence the gap between the lunar and solar year is on average 11 days. Because of this gap the
lunar year falls behind and the mia eh min
i (which are based on the lunar calendar) shift and are
sometimes earlier in the year. This gap, left uncontrolled, would over the years cause the min i
mia eh to shift from summer to winter and vice versa (as the Islamic calendar does, which is a
strictly lunar calendar). Because the Torah requires that gq t be in the springtime (aia ` d yc g), it
is incumbent upon oic zia to reconcile the calendars and create a "Lunisolar" calendar that keeps
the Jewish calendar synchronized with the solar cycle. oic zia would reconcile the calendars by
adding an extra month of xc ` (thereby creating a leap year). This leap year reconciliation was
necessary 7 times in 19 years, or about once every 2-3 years.

10. How many days are there in an average solar year (sun year)?

At the conclusion of the Megilah reading, there is a tfilla that begins with the words, "xW
`
`ipd ." In it it says aiF` clFp bb` lr Fzln g a iM ,lE`W in
gx xk
f `le -"He would not remember
Shaul's compassion, that through his pity of Agag the foe was born. In other words, ond was
ungrateful because he denied the favor that Mordecai's ancestor King Shaul had done for his
own ancestor, Agag the king of Amalek."
The tfilla refers to the incident in Shmuel when King Shaul had the opportunity of
destroying the nation of Amalek. However, instead of obliterating every member of the nation,
Shaul had compassion on their king, and did not kill him. Shmuel was sent by d to rebuke
Shaul for not fulfilling His command. When Shmuel arrived at the army camp of Shaul to
deliver d's message, he saw Agag and immediately killed him. However, before Shmuel's
arrival, & Agags execution, Agag had manged to impregnate a servant girl from whom ond was
a descendent. This was the "favor" that Shaul had done for Agag for which ond's desire to kill
Mordecai and the Jews was deemed ungrateful.
Agag knew that he would eventually die for his hatred of d and the Jewish people. In
fact, he expected it, looked forward to it, and anticipated dying the glorious death of a martyr.
However, Shaul unfortunately gave him a short reprieve allowing him to continue the line of
Amalek. Therefore, Agag was grateful for Shaul's misplaced mercy which allowed him the time
to continue Amalek's legacy.
Even a ryx like ond, is expected to have extended that gratitude to Mordecai, the
descendant of Shaul. We see how much the Torah wants & requires that a person should feel &
show aehd zxkd- gratitude to anyone (parents, siblings, friends, teachers) that did or tried to do
good to us or our ancestors.
The Gemara in Megilla (e"h) asks: -What did xzq` see, that she invited ond?" Why did xzq` feel
it necessary to invite him to the banquet that she prepared for Achashveirosh? If she intended to
persuade King Achashveirosh to turn against ond , would it not have been better for her to meet with the
King in private? R' Shimon ben Menasia answers, mewnd yibxi ile` qp epl dyrie -Perhaps d will feel
and He will perform for us a miracle." Rashi explains, d will feel that I need to flatter this wicked one
[ond] and disgrace my honor." Queen xzq`'s objective in inviting ond was that d should respond to the
tragedy that had befallen the Jewish people: xzq` had to suffer the pain of seemingly flattering the
wicked ond -an act that was beneath the dignity of a holy daughter of Israel. xzq` hoped that the distress
that she experienced would move d to perform a miracle and save the Jewish nation.
This Gemara seems perplexing. The entire Jewish nation was awash in pain and anguish. cinydl
ca`le bexdl To destroy, to slay, and to exterminate... this was to be the fate of every individual Jew - to
be slaughtered together with his nation. There was not much time left for them to live and there was no
obvious route to escape their sentence. "There was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, and
weeping, and wailing; most of them lying in sackcloth and ashes- the suffering of the Jews was
immeasurable. xzq`'s own emotion over the Jewish People's fate is described in the Megilla lglgzze
c`n dklnd and the Queen was greatly distressed. d saw and understood all that the Jewish People were
experiencing. Would the additional indignity that xzq` suffered by flattering ond make any difference
towards Hashem's decision to save her nation?
xzq` understood what the pain of a human being means to d. The slightest discomfort is not lost,
even amongst the greatest suffering and affliction. d feels every bit of anguish that Man experiences and
takes it into account. This additional pain could tilt the scales in favor of the Jewish people, arouse
Hashem's mercy, and help nullify the terrible decree that had befallen them.
We must follow in the ways of d. Just as He is sensitive to every nuance of pain that we
experience, so too must we be sensitive to that of our Jewish brethren. Just as Queen xzq` understood
the pain of the human being and what it means in the eyes of d, so, too, must we focus on the suffering
of our brothers and sisters, and strengthen our tfillas to d, evoking His mercy to bring salvation to the
Jewish people. (Shmuez of Rav Dovid Leibowitz ztl)
iyx also teaches us that ikcxn instructed xzq` not to reveal that she was a
member of the royal family of jlnd le`y. Why ? So that yexeyg` would suspect her
of coming from low-class ancestry, and would possibly send her away.
The question is : If ikcxn had a clear sign from Heaven that xzq` had to be in the
palace with yexeyg` in order to save the Jewish people, why did he
try to get her out ? Wasnt ikcxn concerned about the survival of
the Jewish people ?! How could he risk it all by playing with
destiny ???
The answer is : Of course ikcxn was concerned and worried about the survival of the
Jewish people. But ikcxn knew his place in the world. He
understood that his only responsibility in this situation was to
take responsibility for xzq`s welfare. So - he had to try to get her
away from danger. Would he be successful ? Would he be
spoiling the master plan ? All that is in ds hands. His
responsibility was only to TRY.
The lesson is : When deciding the proper way to behave, future success should not
be a factor. Whether our efforts will achieve success in the end is
up to d. Our job is only to TRY and TRY and keep on TRYING.

Rabbi Akiva was once delivering a lecture when he noticed his students drowsing. In order to
rouse them, he asked, 'Why was it seen fit that Esther should rule over one hundred and twenty-seven
provinces? Because thus said God: Let the daughter of Sarah who lived one hundred and twenty-seven
years come and reign over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces' (Midrash). Why would these
words alert the drowsing students more than the topic of the day?
The Chiddushei HaRim answers that Rabbi Akiva wanted to impress upon his students the
importance of time and the duty to use every second to best advantage. It was because Sarah's one
hundred and twenty- seven years were perfect and completely sin-free that her grand- daughter could
hold sway over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces. Each second meant a family; each minute, a
Had Sarah idled away her time, Esther's kingdom would have been diminished. Time is too
precious to waste. Sarah's well-spent time was rewarded during Esther's reign. Each of us, too, is
presented with the fleeting gift of time and the mission of utilizing it fully and well. Who can say
what the rewards will be for each minute well-spent; or the penalty for each minute wasted? This
