zFiW x R rAx ` - Part I
There are four zFzAW that a special dW x R is read in the dxFY.

1) mil w W zW x R 2) xFkf zW x R 3) dxR zW x R 4) Wc gd zW x R

milw W zW x R

I. This first of the four zeiy x t is mil w W zW x R,

which pertains to the yearly obligation of
every Jew to donate a coin (half a lwy)
that is primarily used to bring the cin z oax w
and other xEAiv zFpAx w (communal sacrifices).
II. dpn
f - This donation had to be given by oqip yc eg y`x because all xEAiv zFpAx w
brought after oqip yc eg y`x had to be bought from the newly collected monies.
III. Therefore mil w W zW x R is scheduled on the zAW before 'a xc` Wc g W`x (or the zay of
xc` ycg y`x if it falls out on zAW)
to remind people at least 30 days in advance to
give their lwy d ziv
gn.

IV. meid - Today that we dont have zepax ew, we read mil w W zW x R to remind us of the
obligation of lwy d ziv
gn and to somewhat fulfill the Mitzvah by reading about it in
the Torah and saying the related Tefillos added in Shacharis and Musaf.
V. lwy
d ziv
gn - Today we also remember the Mitzvah of lwy d ziv
gn by giving a coin
that is one half of the common currency of that country, e.g. a dollar coin.
VI. Since donating is mention three times in the Torah (to signify 3 types of donations),
the Minhag is to give 3 coins that are half the common currency.
VII. Many Shuls provide the service of putting half dollar coins into the dwcv plate so
that everybody can exchange their bills with these coins and then use the coins to
put back into the dw cv plate as lwy d ziv
gn.

VIII. dpn
f - There are different Minhagim as to when lwy d ziv
gn is given. Many give it at
Mincha time Erev mixeR, some give it mixeR morning before Shacharis, and some give
it Mincha time on mixeR.
IX. aiig in - The obligation of lwy d ziv

zFiW x R rAx ` - Part II
xFkf zW x R
I. This special dW x R pertains to the Mitzvah of wln r zii g n zxi k f - the obligation of
every Jew to remember what wln r did to us when we left mixv n, to tell our children
what wln r did and hence the obligation to destroy wln r.
II. On xFkf zW x R we fulfill the obligation to remember, by taking out a 2nd Sefer Torah
and reading Pesukim in the Torah that refer to wln r.
III. dpn
f - xFkf zW x R is scheduled the zAW before mixER.
This is because, mixER also deals
with the destruction of wln r (on d)
and it is proper that wln r zii g n zxi k f should
precede the destroying of wln r (killing on d).

IV. aeig d xn eg - According to most, the obligation to read xFkf zW x R is dxFY
d on.

V. Many hold that the obligation to destroy wln r only applies when all of l` xU
i llM
are in l` xU i ux` and l` xU
i llM is led by a king.
VI. miy
p aeig - There is a difference of opinion whether women are obligated in zxi k f
wln
r zii g n or not. The Minhag is that women do come to Shul to hear xFkf zW x R (or
are Yotzai caric a with the Torah reading on mixeR morning).

Some Shuls have a 2nd reading of xFkf zW x R in the afternoon for the women who
couldnt come and hear xFkf zW x R in the morning.
VII. dkxa ila - A special dk xA is not made when fulfilling the obligation of zii g n zxi k f
wln
r, because a dk xA is not made on a Mitzvah of dz g y d-destruction.
(hk:dtxz g"dk)

VIII. dz `i
x w To fulfill the Mitzvah, the `xew lra must read every word of xFkf zW x R
clearly and each congregant must hear and pay attention to every word.
IX. z`vl dpeek - In addition, the congregation has to have in mind to be Yotzai the
zFkxA and the reading, and the `xew lra and Oleh have to have in mind to be Motzi
the congregation.
X. xkf or xkf - There is doubt if the proper reading of the word wln r xkf z` is xkf or
xkf . Therefore, even though the Halacha follows the opinion of xkf , nevertheless
the Minhag in many Shuls is to say both xkf and xkf by reading the word or Pasuk
twice.
XI. `xewd in - Since most hold that the reading of xekf zy x t is a Torah obligation,
therefore one who is Motzi others must be obligated himself, i.e. an adult.
Hence, a child (and possibly even a Bar Mitzvah boy) should not be the `xew lra to
read xekf zy x t.

XII. dlerd in - Similarly, many hold that a child should not be given the Aliyah of zW x R
xFkf since the Oleh must be Motzi the congregation with the zFkxA.

XIII. Most have the Minhag that the Rav of the Shul gets the Aliyah of xFkf zW
x R.

Page 25 mixeR zekld lewq ixhprn`l` daiyi 'f dzik Page 25

XIV. aeig d zxev
- As mentioned, most hold the reading of xFkf zW x R is dxFY
d on.

Nevertheless, many of the detail of this Mitzvah are opA xc n.

For example:
opA xc n it should be read with the Trop(Torah tune),
opA xc n it should be read with a Minyan
opA xc n it should be read on xekf zy x t zAW
(and possibly - opA xc n a Kosher Sefer Torah is needed).
XV. oebip ila cari
c a car ic a one is Yotzai if xFkf zW x R was read without the Trop.
XVI. oip n ila cari
c a - If one does not have a Minyan (or missed the Minyan) he should
hear it read from the Torah without a Minyan, for example when it is read again
for the women.
XVII. dxez xtq ila cari
c a - If reading from the Torah is not possible, he should read the
Pesukim of xFkf zW x R from a Chumash, preferably with the Trop. (Because some
hold that the Torah requirement can be fulfilled without a Sefer Torah.)
XVIII. mixet
z`i
x w A cari
c A - Some hold, as a last option one may be Yotzai by hearing
the Torah reading of mixeR morning and having in mind to be Yotzai.
The Mishneh Berurah is skeptical about this option because the reading of mixeR
does not include all the details of wln
r zii g n zxi k f.

zFiW x R rAx ` - Part III
dxR zW x R
The special zay of dxR zW x R pertains to the obligation of every Jew to become
xFdh.
On dxR zW x R a 2nd Sefer Torah is taken out and Pesukim pertaining to
the dnec
` dxt and the requirement to become xedh are read. We also say
additional Tefillos in u"y d zxfg of dxy r dpnW in hope that Hashem will redeem
us and purify us with water of dnEc ` dxt.

I. dpn
f - dxR zW x R is scheduled on the zAW before Wcgd zW x R ( i.e. the second to
the last zAW of the month of xc` or the last zAW of the month of xc` if W`x
oqip WcFg
is on zAW).

II. dxR zW x R is scheduled at this time to remind people to become xedh in time to
be able to bring the gqR oAx w.

III. aeig d xn eg - There is a minority opinion that holds that the obligation to hear
dxR zW x R is dxFY
d on.
Hence a child under Bar Mitzvah should not read or
receive the Aliyah of dxt zW x R.

IV. zn `n h - A zn `n h is someone who came in physical contact with a corpse

(even non Jew) or was under the same roof as a Jewish corpse. Similarly, one
becomes zn `n h if he is a covering over a Jewish corpse, e.g. if he stands
over a Jewish corpse.

V. ez` neh
on
f - A zn `n h remains `n h (forever) until he purifies himself
following the procedures set forth in the Torah.

VI. zn `n h ixeqi
` - A zn `n h may not enter the area of the Wcw n d ziA and may
not eat or touch miy cw.
Consequently a zn `n h cannot fulfill the Mitzvah of
gqt oax w.

VII. d` neh
d a` - A zn `n h is considered an d` neh
d a` (a primary contaminant)
and may make `n h food or utensils that he comes in contact with (though
with a lesser level of d` neh).

VIII. odkl zn `n h xeqi` - A od M may not subject himself to becoming zn `n h even

if he is already zn `n h from a previous encounter. Consequently a od k is
forbidden to enter a cemetery, to walk or drive under a tree that shades a
Jewish grave, to enter a hospital building that has a Jewish corpse and is
possibly forbidden to fly on a plane that carries a Jewish corpse.
Page 29 mixeR zekld lewq ixhprn`l` daiyi 'f dzik Page 29
IX. ezx
dh A zn `n h becomes xedh after waiting a total of 7 days and having
` dxt sprinkled on him on the 3rd and 7th of
water mixed with ashes of the dnEc
these days. In addition he must immerse himself in a kosher Mikvah.

X. dnec
` dxt A dnEc
` dxR must be a perfectly red cow with no more than one
hair of another color. In addition the dnec
` dxt is only kosher if it has never
done any work.

XI. dz
iiy r The dnEc
` dxR was slaughtered outside mil yEx
i and then burned by
the deputy lecb od M together with fx` ur-cedarwood, aef`-hyssop
and a ipy
zrl ez-crimson thread.

XII. The resulting ashes were split into 3 parts:

One part was kept near mil yEx
i for use to purify those needed to make
the next dnEc
` dxR.

One part was split between the mipd k to be used to purify people.
One part was put aside next to the Wcw n d ziA for safekeeping.

XIII. dz x
dh - The ashes of the dnEc
` dxR were mixed with miig min-spring
water and
used to sprinkle on the zn `n h.

XIV. dxezd zw g z`f - Sprinkling the dnEc

` dxR water on the zn `n h made the `n h
zn become xedh, yet carrying (and hence sprinkling) dnEc
` dxR water makes
the carrier `n h.

This is one reason why the Mitzvah of dnEc ` dxR is considered a weg - a
Mitzvah without apparent reasoning.
XV. dpip n - There were only 9 zenec` zext made from the time of epiax dy
n until
after the 2nd Wcw n d ziA. Some of the 1st dnEc
` dxt was put aside and is forever
called epiax dy

The 10 dnec ` dxt will be brought by the Mashiach epin iA dxd n a `eaiy.

zFiW x R rAx ` - Wc gd zW x R
This special dW x R pertains to the month of oqip and its importance in being the first
of the order of months. On Wc gd zW x R a 2nd Sefer Torah is taken out and Pesukim
are read pertaining to the Mitzvah of yc gd yeciw-sanctifying
the new month and to
st
the Mitzvah of referring to oqip as the 1 of the months.
Wc gd zW x R is also to remind people that gqR is coming and it is time to begin
preparation for lbxl dil r-the obligation to visit Yerushlaim on each of the yly
mil
bx. Wc gd zW x R is the zAW before oqip WcFg
W`x or on the zAW of W`x
oqip WcFg
if it falls out on zAW.

I. g y`x Even though the calendar year begins with dpy d y`x, (1st and 2nd day of
miy c
ixW Y ), nevertheless, when naming or counting the months, the Torah requires us to
refer to oqip as the "1st month", xii` as the "2nd month", oeiq as the "3rd month" and so
on. When the months are mentioned in Tanach, they are also referred to as the 1 st, 2nd,
3rd etc. starting from oqip. Hence the month of oqip is also called oFW`x d Wc g-the 1st
month.

II. oFW`x d Wc g - The Torah chose oqip to be referred to as the "1st month", to show its
importance and to commemorate the great exodus of mixv n z`i
v
i, which was the
beginning and the birth of l` xU
i llM as Hashem's nation.

III. oqip - The formal names of oqip, xii`, oeiq etc. were not used until after the Jews were
exiled to laa (Babylon) after the destruction of the 1st Wcw n d ziA. These Babylonian
names were later adopted, to commemorate l` xU i llM's
exodus from laa and return to
l` xU
i ux`.

IV. aia `
d yc g - The month of oqip is also called aia ` d ycg-the month of spring. (The name
oqi
p also suggests the meaning of spring, in that the similar word ovip means a flower bud.)

V. dpy d xeair - The significance of oqip being referred to as aia ` d Wcg, is it being the
source of oic zias obligation of dpy d xeair-creating
a leap year.

VI. The average lunar year has 354 days. In contrast, an average solar year (sun year) has 365 days.
Hence the gap between the lunar and solar year is on average 11 days. Because of this gap the
lunar year falls behind and the mia eh min
i (which are based on the lunar calendar) shift and are
sometimes earlier in the year. This gap, left uncontrolled, would over the years cause the min i
mia eh to shift from summer to winter and vice versa (as the Islamic calendar does, which is a
strictly lunar calendar). Because the Torah requires that gq t be in the springtime (aia ` d yc g), it
is incumbent upon oic zia to reconcile the calendars and create a "Lunisolar" calendar that keeps
the Jewish calendar synchronized with the solar cycle. oic zia would reconcile the calendars by
adding an extra month of xc ` (thereby creating a leap year). This leap year reconciliation was
necessary 7 times in 19 years, or about once every 2-3 years.

Thanks 4 not annihilating me!!

At the conclusion of the Megilah reading, there is a tfilla that begins with the words, "xW
`
`ipd ." In it it says aiF` clFp bb` lr Fzln g a iM ,lE`W in
gx xk
f `le -"He would not remember
Shaul's compassion, that through his pity of Agag the foe was born. In other words, ond was
ungrateful because he denied the favor that Mordecai's ancestor King Shaul had done for his
own ancestor, Agag the king of Amalek."

The tfilla refers to the incident in Shmuel when King Shaul had the opportunity of
destroying the nation of Amalek. However, instead of obliterating every member of the nation,
Shaul had compassion on their king, and did not kill him. Shmuel was sent by d to rebuke
Shaul for not fulfilling His command. When Shmuel arrived at the army camp of Shaul to
deliver d's message, he saw Agag and immediately killed him. However, before Shmuel's
arrival, & Agags execution, Agag had manged to impregnate a servant girl from whom ond was
a descendent. This was the "favor" that Shaul had done for Agag for which ond's desire to kill
Mordecai and the Jews was deemed ungrateful.

Without needing to elaborate, the ludicrousness of the situation is apparent. Because

Shaul had wiped out all of ond's ancestors except for one, therefore ond owed a debt of gratitude
to the descendents of his family's murderer??? What could the author of the tfilla have meant?

Agag knew that he would eventually die for his hatred of d and the Jewish people. In
fact, he expected it, looked forward to it, and anticipated dying the glorious death of a martyr.
However, Shaul unfortunately gave him a short reprieve allowing him to continue the line of
Amalek. Therefore, Agag was grateful for Shaul's misplaced mercy which allowed him the time
to continue Amalek's legacy.
Even a ryx like ond, is expected to have extended that gratitude to Mordecai, the
descendant of Shaul. We see how much the Torah wants & requires that a person should feel &
show aehd zxkd- gratitude to anyone (parents, siblings, friends, teachers) that did or tried to do
good to us or our ancestors.

Page 35 mixeR zekld lewq ixhprn`l` daiyi 'f dzik Page 35

Every little bit counts
The wicked ond convinced King Achashveirosh to consent to his plan, and the fate of the Jewish
people was sealed: "Letters were sent by courier to all the King's provinces, to destroy, to slay, and to
exterminate all Jews, young and old, children and women, in a single day,,,(xzq` 3:13)." It was a tragic
time for the Jews: "In every province, wherever the King's command and his decree extended, there was
great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, and weeping, and wailing; most of them lying in sackcloth
and ashes (ibid 4:3)." The time came for xzq` to perform her mission to approach King Achashveirosh,
reveal ond's plot and petition to save her nation: "If it please the King, let the King and ond come today
to the banquet that I have prepared for him (ibid 5:4)."

The Gemara in Megilla (e"h) asks: -What did xzq` see, that she invited ond?" Why did xzq` feel
it necessary to invite him to the banquet that she prepared for Achashveirosh? If she intended to
persuade King Achashveirosh to turn against ond , would it not have been better for her to meet with the
King in private? R' Shimon ben Menasia answers, mewnd yibxi ile` qp epl dyrie -Perhaps d will feel
and He will perform for us a miracle." Rashi explains, d will feel that I need to flatter this wicked one
[ond] and disgrace my honor." Queen xzq`'s objective in inviting ond was that d should respond to the
tragedy that had befallen the Jewish people: xzq` had to suffer the pain of seemingly flattering the
wicked ond -an act that was beneath the dignity of a holy daughter of Israel. xzq` hoped that the distress
that she experienced would move d to perform a miracle and save the Jewish nation.

This Gemara seems perplexing. The entire Jewish nation was awash in pain and anguish. cinydl
ca`le bexdl To destroy, to slay, and to exterminate... this was to be the fate of every individual Jew - to
be slaughtered together with his nation. There was not much time left for them to live and there was no
obvious route to escape their sentence. "There was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, and
weeping, and wailing; most of them lying in sackcloth and ashes- the suffering of the Jews was
immeasurable. xzq`'s own emotion over the Jewish People's fate is described in the Megilla lglgzze
c`n dklnd and the Queen was greatly distressed. d saw and understood all that the Jewish People were
experiencing. Would the additional indignity that xzq` suffered by flattering ond make any difference
towards Hashem's decision to save her nation?

xzq` understood what the pain of a human being means to d. The slightest discomfort is not lost,
even amongst the greatest suffering and affliction. d feels every bit of anguish that Man experiences and
takes it into account. This additional pain could tilt the scales in favor of the Jewish people, arouse
Hashem's mercy, and help nullify the terrible decree that had befallen them.

We must follow in the ways of d. Just as He is sensitive to every nuance of pain that we
experience, so too must we be sensitive to that of our Jewish brethren. Just as Queen xzq` understood
the pain of the human being and what it means in the eyes of d, so, too, must we focus on the suffering
of our brothers and sisters, and strengthen our tfillas to d, evoking His mercy to bring salvation to the
Jewish people. (Shmuez of Rav Dovid Leibowitz ztl)

If at first you dont suceed.... Who cares??
According to iyx, ikcxn was given a signal from Heaven that xzq` was
destined to play a key role in saving the Jewish people from danger. ikcxn realized
that the righteous xzq` would not have been seized and taken to yexeyg` unless d
wanted her to be there in order to save the Jews.

iyx also teaches us that ikcxn instructed xzq` not to reveal that she was a
member of the royal family of jlnd le`y. Why ? So that yexeyg` would suspect her
of coming from low-class ancestry, and would possibly send her away.

The question is : If ikcxn had a clear sign from Heaven that xzq` had to be in the
palace with yexeyg` in order to save the Jewish people, why did he
try to get her out ? Wasnt ikcxn concerned about the survival of
the Jewish people ?! How could he risk it all by playing with
destiny ???

The answer is : Of course ikcxn was concerned and worried about the survival of the
Jewish people. But ikcxn knew his place in the world. He
understood that his only responsibility in this situation was to
take responsibility for xzq`s welfare. So - he had to try to get her
away from danger. Would he be successful ? Would he be
spoiling the master plan ? All that is in ds hands. His
responsibility was only to TRY.

The lesson is : When deciding the proper way to behave, future success should not
be a factor. Whether our efforts will achieve success in the end is
up to d. Our job is only to TRY and TRY and keep on TRYING.

One hundred and twenty-seven provinces (1:1).

Rabbi Akiva was once delivering a lecture when he noticed his students drowsing. In order to

rouse them, he asked, 'Why was it seen fit that Esther should rule over one hundred and twenty-seven

provinces? Because thus said God: Let the daughter of Sarah who lived one hundred and twenty-seven

years come and reign over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces' (Midrash). Why would these

words alert the drowsing students more than the topic of the day?

The Chiddushei HaRim answers that Rabbi Akiva wanted to impress upon his students the

importance of time and the duty to use every second to best advantage. It was because Sarah's one

hundred and twenty- seven years were perfect and completely sin-free that her grand- daughter could

hold sway over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces. Each second meant a family; each minute, a

farm; each day, a village.

Had Sarah idled away her time, Esther's kingdom would have been diminished. Time is too

precious to waste. Sarah's well-spent time was rewarded during Esther's reign. Each of us, too, is

presented with the fleeting gift of time and the mission of utilizing it fully and well. Who can say

what the rewards will be for each minute well-spent; or the penalty for each minute wasted? This

admonition brought Rabbi Akiva's students to attention (Chiddushei HaRim).

Seize the Moment
Megilas Esther not only relates the inspiring redemption of the Jewish People from the clutches
of Achashveirosh and Haman, but also conveys to us an important strategy for our growth in ruchnius.
The Gemara in Shabbos, in its explanation of the posuk in Parshas Yisro - xdd zgz eavizie-
contrasts the Kabolas haTorah of the Dor Hamidbar to that in the time of Achashveirosh. While the
Kabolas haTorah at Har Sinai is seen in some slight manner as having been involuntary, the kabolah
during the time of the Megilah is portrayed as being a complete, full-hearted acceptance. In his
commentary to the gemara, Rashi explains that what spelled the difference was that Klal Yisroel in
Galus Bavel made their acceptance of the Torah mdl dyrpy qpd zad`n out of love for the miracles that
were performed on their behalf. This was the factor that allowed them to be mekabel the Torah in such a
pure form.
At first glance, Rashi's explanation seems rather puzzling. If it were the nisim surrounding Purim
that gave Klal Yisroel the ability to achieve such lofty heights at that time, one would assume that they
had reached those same heights after experiencing an almost endless array of open miracles when they
departed from Mizrayim.
Sefer Chidushai HaLev explains this Rashi. He says that the key factor in Klal Yisroels ability
to be mekabel the Torah belev shalem was the fact that they were mekabel as the nisim unfolded. They
were able to concretize their spiritual gains immediately. In the midbar, Klal Yisroel were already 49
days from the miracles that had accompanied their departure it. Although they were still at a highly
elevated spiritual level, the inspiration they had gained just 7 weeks past had already begun to fade.
Therefore, when it came time to accept the Torah at Har Sinai, the inspiration they had gained so
recently was enough to cause them to be mekabal on highest level.
It is a beautiful explanation and a powerful lesson. How many times do we find ourselves
inspired to do more? Unfortunately before we can act upon it, time passes, the inspiration fades, and we
settle back into the doldrums of daily life. We can glean from this Chazal how important it is to seize the
moment, whether our new found drive comes from some external source or simply a greater insight into
our own Avodas Hashem.
This concept is no less applicable to Purim itself. Yom Kippur is seen as the holiest day on the
Jewish calendar. We are all familiar with the Chazal that compare that holy day to Purim to the extent
that it is referred to as Yom kiPurim. Purim is a golden opportunity for uplifting ourselves in Avodas
Hashem. Yet, from our discussion above, we see that the inspiration we gain, if not immediately acted
upon begins to dissipate quickly. May Hashem grant us all an elevated spiritual experience on Purim, as
well as the keen insight to grow from it. Hatzlachah, and Freilichen Purim.
