SECTION 02301

DRAINAGE GENERALLY

PART 1: GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

1.01.1 This work shall consist of pipe culverts, box culverts, open U-ditches, French
drain, open channel, siphon and other drainage facilities in accordance with
these Specifications and the specifications for other work items involved, all in
conformity with the lines, grades and dimensions as shown on the Drawings
and as instructed by the Engineer.

1.02 APPLICABLE PROVISIONS, CODES AND STANDARD:

1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE/CONTROL PROGRAMME:

The Contractor shall comply with the applicable reference standards listed in
Section 01201 QUALITY ASSURANCE/ CONTROL PROGRAMME and the
criteria specified herein.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

Submittals shall be made in accordance with the requirements of Section


01202 SUBMITTALS and as specified herein.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL:

3.01.1 The types and characteristics of the drainage structures shown on the
Drawings may be subject to modification by the Engineer due to the changes
of the site condition or alternation of the Governments future planning.

3.01.2 Before commencement of the drainage works, the Contractor shall undertake
a survey of the site to confirm or to determine the location, pipe or channel size,
invert level and estimated discharge of all storm water or foul sewer flows
entering the site.

3.01.3 On the basis of the result of this survey, the final types, lines, characteristics
and quantities shall be decided by the Engineer, who will inform the Contractor
of them in writing in due time in relation to approved schedule of work
submitted by the Contractor.

3.01.4 Responsibility for accurately locating all existing flows will rest with the
Contractor.

3.01.5 Survey work shall be done in accordance with the requirements specified in
Section 01401 SURVEY

3.01.6 The Engineer reserves the right to inspect and test all pre-cast concrete items
before their delivery to the site and any time prior to and during laying.

3.02 SEQUENCE OF WORK:

3.02.1 The Contractor shall schedule the construction of drainage works that the
discharge of run-off from rain or other sources, both during and after
construction, is properly provided for.

3.02.2 To avoid damage to work in course of construction the Contractor shall provide
in due time adequate means of protection, including all necessary temporary
outlet ditches, dams, or diversion channels.

3.02.3 Culverts or other drainage works for the discharge of run-off water either
during or after construction shall not be constructed until adequate facilities for
the in-flow and out-flow of the water have been completed, and they shall be
kept clear of all obstructions that might impede the flow of water.

3.02.4 All culverts, ditches, drains and other drainage works shall be operative before
work is commenced on the construction of sub-grade, sub-base, sub-ballast or
shoulders.

3.02.5 Where new drainage connects to existing, the existing drainage shall be

thoroughly cleaned out at Contractors cost before the final connection is
made.

3.02.6 These requirements shall be met without additional payment and all costs
thereof shall be included in the unit price for the pay item being installed or
constructed.

3.03 MAINTENANCE OF EXISTING DRAINAGE:

3.03.1 The Contractor shall clean and maintain the existing drainage entering,
crossing or affecting the Works.

3.03.2 This shall include, if affected by the Contractors operations and where
required by the Engineer, the cleaning of all existing channels, ditches,
siphons, irrigation and pipes upstream and down stream to an extent 100-m
beyond the Construction limits and the right-of-way, and the removal and
disposal of rubbish recovered from cleaning.

3.03.3 Should the maintenance work necessitate, in the opinion of the Engineer,
repair, remedial or reconstruction work to the existing drainage, except where
such work is due to the damage caused by the Contractor, the Engineer will
instruct the extent of such work required and the Contractor will be entitled to
payment under the appropriate pay item or items included in other sections of
the Specifications.
