generalpopulationis15to20percent.Fiftyonepercentofallthestudentsenrolledinthenation's
specialeducationprogramsareclassifiedaslearningdisabled(U.S.DeptartmentofEducation)."
Unfortunately,thisdiagnosisisoftenviewedasahindranceratherthananopportunityforgrowth
andunderstanding.
Parentsandstudents,pleasenote:Individualsdiagnosedwithlearningdisabilitiesarenot
"stupid."Infact,toqualifyashavingalearningdisability,youmusthaveaverageintelligence.This
meansthatyouhavetobeatleastalittlebitsmart.
TypesofLearningStyles
Studentsthathavelearningdisabilitieshaveonecommonality,aprocessingdeficitthatinterfereswiththeir
learning.Nevertheless,itisimportanttorememberthateveryindividuallearnsdifferentlyandthushasa
uniquelearningstyle."Approximately20to30percentoftheschoolagedpopulationrememberswhatis
heard40percentrecallswellvisuallythethingsthatareseenorreadmanymustwriteorusetheirfingersin
somemanipulativewaytohelpthemrememberbasicfactsotherpeoplecannotinternalizeinformationor
skillsunlesstheyusetheminreallifeactivitiessuchasactuallywritingalettertolearnthecorrectformat."

Forsome,auditoryinputismostvaluableothersrelyuponavisualstyle.Stillotherslearnthrough
kinestheticmeans,oracombinationofthethree.Everypersonhasoneprimarylearningmode.Once
youidentifythatmode,youcanlearntomaximizeitandenhanceyourchild'seducation.
AuditoryLearners
Auditorylearnerstendtobenefitmostfromtraditionalteachingtechniques.Manyteachersusea
lecturestyleforum,presentinginformationbytalkingtotheirstudents.Regulatingvoicetone,
inflection,andbodylanguagewillhelpallstudentsmaintaininterestandattention.Auditorylearners
succeedwhendirectionsarereadaloud,speechesarerequired,orinformationispresentedand
