MATERIALS:
Cardboard
Duct Tape
Scissors
Engineering Process Worksheet
ANTICIPATORY SET:
When the students return from lunch I will have piles of cardboard laid out
where students can see it when they walk in.
Hello class! Im really excited to work with you today as we continue our
new unit on engineering! Today we are going to do some more construction,
building and planning as engineers this time, with cardboard!
TEACHER INSTRUCTION:
We have, over the past week, watched video on engineering. In fact, we
even began practicing our work with the Engineers Process. (Hold up
worksheet as a reminder).
So today, we shouldnt have any new information being thrown at us. In fact
instead we should be perfecting our craft, our efficiency and our skills in
making a plan, prototype and revisions to make a successful functioning
product.
Today, the only thing new is the days challenge! Monday, we constructed
bridges from Legos. Yesterday we created cars that transported eggs and
today we are going to construct a chair/table from carboard and duct tape!
Now HERE is the challenge! Today, your team will once again fill out the
Engineers Process worksheet, and then construct a chair/table from
cardboard and it must be able to support and hold a 5th GRADE STUDENT!
Now making a car move over a distance is hard enough but I thought I
would give you an even BIGGER challenge. We are going to put an EGG in
your car to be transported.
The team that can make a chair thats just right for our Goldilocks the
Engineer will win a piece of gum!
CLOSURE:
Today I was so impressed to see your plans, revisions and constructions as
engineers! You did a fantastic job at being proactive, thinking for yourself,
and getting the job done! Tomorrow we will continue with our lesson on
engineering, so make sure you bring your innovative minds with you to class!
Lets pick up our materials and clean up before we go to specials!
*After the room is cleaned up finish with a post test either Thursday if time
allows or Friday afternoon*
