Determination of the chain line

In all bikes as there is a variation of which will determine the proper function
ing of the group of changes, both front and rear: the string line. This length m
easured from the midpoint of all the plates and the sprocket to the axis of symm
etry of the vertical plane of the bicycle. The chain line is specified by the ma
nufacturer of transmission and must be respected as much as possible to get a go
od performance. To measure it can be done manually by eye with a gauge or meter,
or with the simple formulas we explain below.
Measurements A variety of manufacturers cranks and sprockets (Campagnolo, Shiman
o, Truvativ, Sram, FSA, Miche ..) so there is no line as standard chain, but sin
ce most manufactures these components to be compatible with most widely transmis
sions, which are Shimano and Campagnolo, the values used by the different brands
are very close at around 45-51 mm. the axis of symmetry at the midpoint of the
dishes or pine nuts. The most appropriate will make sure, which is the recommend
ed action for our broadcast asking the manufacturer, but if we do not get this i
nformation it is best not to get out of the securities mentioned above. Check th
e chain line is simple and should match both the plate and on the cassette. A hi
ghly visible sign to see if the bike is our right is to put the pinion closer to
the middle of the cassette, the fifth one 9-speed, and engage medium bowl if we
have three, or hand out the string and place in the gap that remains between th
e small and big dish if only two. In this position the chain should be as straig
ht as possible. If we want more accuracy use the following formulas:
Meals: We will make the distances A and B from the side of the plate and the int
erior of the small to the axis of symmetry respectively. Are added, divided by t
wo and get the chain line (LC), which is the value from this point to the axis o
f symmetry.
We can also measure or gauge of about one meter from the middle chainring (if an
y) or the midpoint between the two plates and the center of the bottom bracket s
hell.
LC =
A-B 2
Cassette: We will make the distances as follows: F from the inner faces of the f
orks of the frame, the D from the outside of the large and small crown, and E in
side the little toe to the crown. Is subtracted from D to F, is divided by two a
nd the outcome is subtracted from E, taking the value of the string line should
match the distance of the pinion through the axis of symmetry and the distance c
alculated above for the dishes. Manually will measure approximately from the mid
dle of the cassette sprocket to the center of the rear hub. F-D-E CL = 2
