ENERGY AUDIT

ST ALBANS EPISCOPAL CHURCH

JUNE 28, 2014

AUDIT TEAM: KLH Engineers, Mohamed El-Sayed, PE and Julia Noschang,

PE.
TIME: 1:30 4:00 PM.

OPENING REMARKS: The audit process will take approximately six weeks. They
have already been provided our electricity and gas consumption information for the
past three years. A final report will be provided St Albans at the end of the process
to whomever wishes to attend, and they are willing to meet with us in the evening.

TODAYS PROCESS:
Church Building. A tour began with the inspection of insulation as could be
seen from the attic entrance in the ceiling of the church kitchen. The tour continued
to the Nave where the lighting consumption/ heat load and timed thermostat with
settings were addressed. Windows and storm windows were examined. The tour
continued around the remainder of the building where certain items were pointed
out, e.g., organ motor, large office copier. During the tour, hours of building use
were explained for scheduled and special services (marriage, memorial), normal
office hours, and meetings, scheduled and impromptu. The tour continued to the
basement where model numbers were taken for the heating units and water heater
for energy consumption verification. Outdoor air conditioning compressor model
numbers were taken and the two electrical service entrance meters were observed.
(Combining the two meters into a single meter may reduce monthly electricity
cost.). The review of this building concluded with a tour of the basement, noting
location of electrical and phone panels, HVAC units/configurations, water heater,
and sump pumps. Flood history/evidence/mitigation measures were also reviewed.
Education Building. The tour continued with an inspection of the large and
small kitchens, the Parish Hall, stage, rear stairwell, classrooms, and the HVAC
room. The parish hall kitchen was reviewed noting the commercial stove,
refrigerator, stack oven, and dishwasher. Use of the facility was explained (Sunday
morning nursery, childrens and adults education, weekly AA/NA meetings,
exercise groups three times/week, monthly homeless meal, parish fellowship
events, and annual rummage setup/sale).
Similarly to the Church Building, lighting, HVAC, electric panels, water heater, etc.
were examined and data noted.

CONCLUDING REMARKS: The team stated that the most immediate cost effective
savings appears to be the installation of a thermostat system for the control of
heating and air conditioning throughout both buildings. While no discrepancies
were cited, the overall condition of electrical systems was noted, especially the
residential nature of both systems. (Air conditioning was not added until later in the
life of both buildings; compressor activation results in noticeable dimming of lights.)
OBSERVATIONS: The team appears experienced and well qualified to provide a
professional energy audit of our buildings. Their interest and attention to detail was
appreciated. I look forward to their assessment and report.
