List and describe three (3) of the six (6) characteristics of a successful secondary physical education program as discussed in Ch. 1. Be prepared to share your responses in class.
1. A Positive Learning Environment Exists-
The instructor is the most important factor in the learning environment. An effective teacher creates a teaching-learning atmosphere that is both positive and caring. Students feel safe in your classroom and feel like they can talk and tell you things. Feedback is positive, but also instructional to improve students overall skills.
2. Student Choice Is Offered-
The elective approach to physical education curriculum refers to allowing student choice for an option. Students can choose which activity or task they would like to be a part of to maximize participation and effort. It also shows students personal interest towards a certain activity. If the students like what they are participating in, they will challenge themselves more. This will cut down on student alienation.
3. A Variety of Activities Are Available-
This is when teachers give students multiple options for them to pick from. At Agawam High School, the teachers give and describe multiple activities for students to pick for a 2-week section. Students pick which activity they like the most and they are put into that activity. This helps students maximize effort and participation. It could include a safer environment for your students to be in. These activities could include: Outdoor adventure activities, health-related physical activities, and modified team sports. Not all students like the same things and this will give students more of a well-balanced learning of lifelong skills. This will especially help if you have a maximum number of students set for each activity.
