PHED 239: High School Module

Worksheet - Chapter 3

Be prepared to discuss in class:

1. As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping high school

students by chronological age rather than by developmental level? Give
examples.

Pros Cons

No age difference Need lots of motivation

Students know each other Can get off task very easily
better Could be many different skill
Similarly developed levels depending on sport- some
physically, mentally, emotionally students might not be challenged
Could be many different skill as much
levels depending on sport- could
challenge and motivate other
students to work on skills to get
better

2. Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical, social,

emotional, and intellectual) of high school students, and the implications for each
trait.

Physical- students at the high school level are more physically developed. They can
perform tasks that they couldnt do when they were younger.
Ex. Students can throw a football further than they could when they were in
elementary school.

Social- students are more capable of sharing equipment and respond well to being in
groups with their peers even if they arent best friends. They will be more involved in
the lesson if they have input into what they are learning.
Ex. spliting students up randomly into teams and still working well together and
communicating.

Emotional- students do get upset when they are unsuccessful at a task, but they do not
pout about and sit out for the rest of the lesson.
Ex. missing a shot in basketball and then punting the ball across the gym.

Intellectual- students at the high school level have more of a developed vocabulary.
They understand specific feedback and what they need to improve on to be successful
and apply it in the activity.
