Focus and Purpose of Lesson: Improve overall skills in floor hockey

Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (National #__; MA CF #__; Task/Activity #__)

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
(A)Respect the equipment and follow the rules of the classroom throughout the whole lesson.
(National # S4.H5.L1; MA CF # 2.26; Activity # Closure)
(P)Demonstrate how to pass to a partner in motion 10 times successfully. (National # S2.H1.L1;
MA CF # 2.17; Activity # 2)
(C)Understand and repeat the key points of a pass, shot, and handling of a floor hockey ball
during the closure of the lesson. (National # S2.H2.L1; MA CF # 2.9; Activity # Closure)

Teacher Performance Objective

During the lesson the teacher will:

1. Explain rules and safety of all the activities.

2. Check for understanding of the pass, shot, and handling of a floor hockey ball.
3. Keep a positive learning environment throughout the lesson by giving corrective
feedback.
4. Address any off-task behavior right away so it doesnt disrupt the lesson anymore
than it needs to.

Special Considerations:
This is my first lesson with these students, so I need to make sure they respect
me and I respect them.
When I observed this class there were a lot of students on their phones, so I will
need to address that there will be no phones during my lesson.
Beware of your surroundings. Floor hockey is a dangerous sport and anything
can happen at any time, so caution and safety will be key.
Look out for the nets at either end of the gymnasium because there are heavy
and wont budge easily if you run into them.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

TIME SEQUENCE OF LESSON ORGANIZATION

0-5 Attendance: Students will enter the gymnasium Tt

and go directly to their attendance spot. S S S S S
Attendance will be taken and then students will S S S S S
go into the locker room to change for class. S S S S S
S S S S S
5-10 Transition: Students will go into their respective
locker rooms and change, and then re-enter the
gymnasium.

10-20 Warm-up: Students will run/jog 5 laps around Tt

the gymnasium. S S
10 push ups, then 10 crunches S S
(teacher will signal the start of each set S S
with a whistle) SSSSSS
Gather everyone around the mid
court line.
Teacher or chosen student will
lead the class in stretches.
During stretching, teacher will
introduce himself again to the class, and
go over focus of the days lesson, start
and stop signals, and safety.
Focus of the day: Passing, shooting, and
stickhandling in floor hockey.

Start and stop signals: My start signal will be

Ready, Go!. My stop signal will be 1 long
whistle. When the whistle sounds I need eyes
on me and equipment at your feet.

Safety: Floor hockey is one of the most

dangerous sports we do in Phys Ed, so:
No pushing or shoving anyone
No slashing anyone
No tripping anyone
Floor hockey stick should not
come above your waist at any point.
Especially because if your hockey stick
on the floor you have a better chance of
making a play, than if its in the air and
you have to react to it.
20-25 Informing: Stick Handling Tt
Used when moving the hockey S S
ball up the court S S
Used when in traffic and you S S
need to move around defenders SSSSSS

Refining: Key points of stick handling

Top hand at the top of the stick,
bottom hand near middle- top part of
stick (a little further than the distance
across your body at waist level)
Loose grip so you twist the stick
in your hand
Athletic stance
Eyes up so you can see the ball,
but also see what is in front of you
Keep ball close to your body

Demonstration: Teacher will demonstrate how Tt S

to stick handle from side to side using the S S
forehand and the backhand S S
*Be sure to slow down the movement or even S S
have a student demonstration and walk the SSSSSS
students through the movement*

25-27 Transition: Have students get a hockey stick

and a ball depending on what month their
birthday is in so there arent 20 students fighting
over one hockey stick.

Check for understanding: Teacher needs raised

hands to answer 1 key point of stick handling

27-33 Activity 1: Stick handling Tt

On the go signal the students will S S S S S
move around the entire court handling S S S S S
the hockey ball and staying aware of S S S S S
their personal space, so they dont have S S S S S
the ball stolen.

Extension:
Students will be moved to only 1
half of the court to make it a bit more
challenging.
Students will be moved inside
the 3-point line to work on handling the
ball in tight areas with multiple
opponents around them.
33-35 Transition: *Whistle is blown. Students will Tt
move back to the halfcourt line and will have 20 S S
seconds to pick a partner and stand next to S S
them. S S
SSSSSS
35-41 Informing: Passing
Useful to move the ball up the
court quicker (ball moves faster than
your feet)
Useful when a teammate is open
and can get a good shot on net
Useful when there are defenders
around you
Tt
Refining: Key points of passing S S
Athletic stance S S
Hockey ball to the side of your S S
body SSSSSS
Sweep the ball with some touch
(dont hit the ball as hard as you can
unless you need to pass it far, your
teammates wont be able to handle the
pass)
Follow through below your waist
Lead your partner with the ball,
dont pass it to them because by the
time it gets there it will be behind them
Refining: Catching a pass
Act like the hockey ball is an
egg and if it hits the blade of the hockey
stick too hard the egg will crack
Move the hockey stick slightly Tt S
back as the hockey ball comes towards S S
you S S
S S
Demonstrate: Have a pair of partners come up SSSSSS
and demonstrate how to pass and receive the
hockey ball.
41-49 C C
P1 P2 P1 P6

P3 P4
Activity 2: P2
With your partner, move around P7 P9 P5
the gymnasium and pass back and forth
to each other. (using forehand and P3 P6 P8
backhand) P5
Partners spread out further from P4
each other to try out longer passes. P7 P8
Students have 1 minute to see
how many passes they can make P9 P10 P10
*doesnt count if you just tap it back and forth to C C
each other from 2 or so feet away.
Extension:
Have partners see how many
passes they can make in a row without Tt
49-51 missing one. S S
*Doesnt count if you just tap it back and forth to S S
each other from 2 or so feet away. S S
SSSSSS
51-57 Transition: 2 students can move nets onto the
middle of the baseline while the rest will meet
near one of the nets

Informing: Defense and shooting

Defense is useful when you
dont have the ball
When you dont want a player
with the ball to get around you
When you want to block a
players shot with your hockey stick
Shooting is useful when trying to
score
Shooting is useful when you are
in your end and you want to shoot it to
someone at the other end of the court.

Refining: Defense
Low, athletic stance so the
offensive player cant get around you
Shuffle side to side, dont cross
your feet
Keep stick close to your body so
you dont trip the offensive player
When the hockey ball is close
enough to you that you feel you can
reach it, move your stick at the ball and
poke check the ball
When someone is about to
shoot, place your hockey stick in
between the hockey ball and the net and
that will give you your best chance to
block the shot
Refining: Shooting
Turn your body, so the shoulder
of your top hand of the stick is pointing
towards the goal
Have the hockey ball near the
heel of the blade of your stick. (the part
of the stick that is curved upwards
pointing towards your hands.
Sweep your arms across your
body
Pull in towards your body with
your top hand, push out with your
bottom hand
Snap your wrists when you
follow through so the ball travels in the
57-64 path you were intending C CC C
Follow through below your waist O O O O
*Follow through at your waist = ball will go D D
towards the top part of the net O O O O
*Follow through at your shins and the ball will C CC C
go towards the middle height of the net
*Follow through on the ground or at your feet
and the ball will stay on, or close to the ground. Tt

Activity 3: Keep Away

Students will split into 4 groups C CC C
of 5. O O O O
2 on one side of the court, 2 on D D
the other side O O O O
Squares using cones are set up C CC C
for each group
4 offensive players, 1 defensive
player
Offensive players will start with
the hockey ball near the outside of the
square
Offensive players will attempt to
make passes to each other
*offensive players can move to open space.
Dont just stand in the same spot the whole time
Defensive player can move
around and has to try and stop a pass or
hit the ball make the ball somehow
leave the square. (other than throwing it) C CC C
If defense gains control of the O O O O
ball, the defensive player switches with DD DD
whichever offensive touched the ball O O
last. C CC C
If the same defender has been
on defense for more than 1 minute
continuously, they will have the
opportunity to switch with an offensive
64-65 player.

Extension:
65-77 One offensive player will switch C N C
to defense, so now it is 3v2 inside the T1 T1 T2 T2
square T1 T2
If the defense gains controls T1 T1 T2 T2
whichever defender has been in longest
switches with whichever player last CCCCCCCCCCCCC
touched the ball. T3 T3 T3 T3
T3 T4
Transition: Groups will be asked to pick up the T3 T3 T4 T4
cones making up their square and give them to C N C
the teacher and meet the teacher at halfcourt.

Activity 4: Gameplay
Students will stay in the groups
they were just in for keep away. The 2
teams that were on the same side for
keep away will stay on that side and
play against each other. Same thing
with the 2 teams on the other side of the
court.
First possession will be decided
by one game of Rock, Paper, Scissors
between one person from each team.
There is only half a court for
each game, so if the ball changes
possession, the ball must be brought
back past the 3-point line just like in half
77-78 court basketball.
Games to 3 or whichever team
is winning after 3 minutes.
One team from each side will
78-84 switch courts after Game 1, so you play Tt
a new team. S S
Extension: S S
If the games are going by S S
quickly, the nets will be turned so the SSSSSS
bottom is now the part you have to
score on.
The width is still the same, but
the height of the goal is much lower.

Transition: Students will jog over and place the Key:

hockey sticks in the rack and the teachers will Tt = teacher
be given the 2 hockey balls used in the game. S = student
P = partner group
Closure: What are some key points of: C = cones
What were some key things you D = defensive player
did that helped you succeed during O = offensive player
those small sided games. N = net
What are some safety concerns T = team
when it comes to floor hockey. *number corresponded with
Great job today everyone! Have a great rest of which team or partner group
your day. each student was in

*Students will have 3-4 minutes to change for

their next class
