Focus and Purpose of Lesson: Improve skills of serving in volleyball

Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (National #__; MA CF #__; Task/Activity #__)

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
(A)Respect the equipment and follow the rules of the classroom throughout the whole lesson.
(National # S4.H5.L1; MA CF # 2.26; Activity # Closure)
(P)Demonstrate how to serve to a target 5 times during the activity. (National # S2.H1.L1; MA
CF # 2.17; Activity # 2)
(C)Understand and repeat the key points of the underhand and overhand volleyball serve during
the closure of the lesson. (National # S2.H2.L1; MA CF # 2.9; Activity # Closure)

Teacher Performance Objective

During the lesson the teacher will:

1. Explain rules and safety of all the activities and stress these regulations
throughout the lesson.
2. Check for understanding of the underhand and overhand serve before the start of
every lesson.
3. Keep a positive learning environment throughout the lesson by giving corrective
feedback.
4. Address any off-task behavior throughout the lesson instantly, so it doesnt
disrupt the lesson anymore than it needs to.

Special Considerations:
I need to work on my relationships with the students, so they feel comfortable in
the classroom.
When I observed this class there were a lot of students on their phones, so I will
need to address that there will be no phones during my lesson.
Beware of your surroundings. Volleyball is a dangerous sport and anything can
happen at any time, so caution and safety will be key.
Look out for the nets in the middle of the gymnasium because theyre heavy and
wont budge easily if you run into them.
The students dont seem energized at the beginning of class, so they need to be
energized and motivated for the lesson from the start.

hand just above knee-level
Swing dominant hand back and
then forward
Drop volleyball just before contact
with the dominant hand
Strike volleyball with the heel of the
hand
17-18 Follow through straight in the air
and stop when you reach your head

Demonstration: Teacher will demonstrate and

18-19 then have student volunteer demonstrate the
proper skill cues of the underhand serve

Transition: Have students find a partner and then

one student from each partner group will retrieve
a volleyball from the rack and come back to stand
19-27 with their partner. Students will then be split into
2 courts (5 partner groups to a court).

Activity 1: Partner Serving

Partners will stand on opposite
sides of the volleyball net
Partners will serve volleyball
underhand aiming for their partner.
Partner will either catch the
volleyball, or stop it and pick it up and then
serve it back to their partner over the net
Emphasize the fact that volleyballs
will be flying everywhere, so really try to
aim for your partner
Communicate with other groups to
ensure safety
Extension Up:
Students can challenge
themselves by moving further back
Extension Down:
27-28 Students can make it easier for
themselves by moving closer to the net
28-29
Transition: *Whistle is blown to stop activity.

Demonstrate: Demonstrate activity 2 so the

students understand what the goal of the activity
29-34 is. Ask for a student volunteer to demonstrate, as
well.

volleyball underhand while trying to aim for
the front row and/or back row of the other
side of the court.
Students can aim try straight shots,
or try and serve the volleyball cross-court,
or low/high in the air
Not all students have volleyballs,
so they may some time where students
dont have a volleyball, so they will need to
run and retrieve so they can get reps.

Students can aim for hot spots on
the ground as targets
34-35 Extension Down:
Students may move closer to the
35-36 net

Transition: *Whistle is blown to stop activity.

37-45 Demonstrate: Demonstrate activity 3 so the

students know the end goal. Also, ask for a
student volunteer,as well so they can
demonstrate.

Activity 3: Target Practice

Hula hoops will be laid out
throughout the court to serve as targets for
the students to serve at
Students will serve underhand
from a distance that feels comfortable for
them
Scoring-
Any student that hits a hot spot will
receive 2 points
Any student that serves the
volleyball inside a hula hoop will receive 1
point
Extension Up:
See how many times the students
can serve the volleyball into the circle in a
row
45-46 See how many times the student
can serve the volleyball into the circle in 1
minute
Extension Down:
46-47 Have students try and continue to
aim for the front row and/or back row
Have students try and serve the
ball right down the boundary lines
Transition: *Whistle is blown to end activity.
Students will walk to the end line of one of the
courts.

Informing: Overhand Serve

Step with opposite foot
Toss volleyball about 1-2 feet in the
air over the shoulder of your dominant
hand
Make contact with the volleyball,
47-48 so it almost feels like you are high fiving
the volleyball
When making contact, the hand
should be angled slightly upward, so the

send it over the net.
Follow through downward and
across the body

volleyball

overhand serve and then have student come up

they were in when the last activity ended.

themselves by moving further back from
the net
Students can aim for the targets on
the other side of the court
Extension Down:
Students can move closer to the
net
Students can aim for the targets on
the other side of the court

Transition: *Whistle is blown to end the activity.

Informing: Talk to students about next activity

Players from each team will start
on the end line of their court with 3
volleyballs on each end line for each team
Students will attempt to score
points for their team by serving the
volleyball into a hula hoop on the other
side of the court
If students fail to serve the
volleyball over the net or fail to serve it
inside the boundaries of the court they
66-76 must stand on one of the hot spots on
their side of the court
Only way students can return to
serving is by catching a volleyball served
over the net by other team
Students can score 1 point for their
team each time they serve it inside a hula
hoop

all times until they catch a volleyball
Students are allowed to have one
foot off the hot spot. Can pivot with the
other foot.
Students can jump up to catch a
volleyball as long as they come down and
land on hot spot with at least one foot

that skill, youll improve more and more each
time.
