papers, 20 pencils

Focus and Purpose of Lesson: Improve skills of the clear and drop shot in badminton.

Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (National #__; MA CF #__; Task/Activity #__)

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(A)Respect the equipment and follow the rules of the classroom throughout the whole lesson.
(National # S4.H5.L1; MA CF # 2.26; Activity #: Closure)
(P)Hit a clear shot and/or a drop shot effectively 8 out of 10 times during gameplay. (National
S1.H1.L1; Activity #: Gameplay)
(C)Break down the key points of both the clear shot and drop shot at the end of the lesson.
(National #S2.H1.L1; Activity #: Closure)

Teacher Performance Objective

During the lesson the teacher will:

1. Explain rules and safety of all the activities and stress these regulations before
every activity throughout the lesson.
2. Check for understanding of the clear shot and drop shot before the start of every
activity.
3. Address any off-task behavior throughout the lesson instantly, so it doesnt
disrupt the lesson anymore than it needs to.

Special Considerations:
I need to work on my relationships with the students, so they feel comfortable in
the classroom.
Beware of your surroundings. Badminton is a rather safe sport, but you always
need to take precautions. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings when
swinging the racket.
Look out for the nets in the middle of the gymnasium because theyre heavy and
wont budge easily if you run into them.
The students dont seem energized at the beginning of class, so they need to be
energized and motivated for the lesson from the start.

LESSON PLAN ORGANIZATION

TIME SEQUENCE OF LESSON ORGANIZATION

0-5 Attendance: Students will enter the gymnasium T

and go directly to their attendance spot. SSSSSSSSSS
Attendance will be taken and then students will SSSSSSSSSS
go into the locker room to change for class.

5-10 Transition: Students will go into their respective

locker rooms and change, and then re-enter the
gymnasium.

10-15 Warm-up: Students will run/jog for 2 minutes T

around the gymnasium. S S S S S S
Gather everyone around the mid S S
court line. S S
During stretching, teacher will S S
introduce himself again to the class, and S S S S S S S S
go over focus of the days lesson, start
and stop signals, and safety.

Focus of the day: To work on the process of the

clear shot and drop shot in badminton.

Start and stop signals: My start signal will be

Ready, Go!. My stop signal will be 1 long
whistle. When the whistle sounds I need eyes on
me and equipment at your feet.

Safety: Badminton can be a dangerous sport we

need to:
Watch out for the rackets slipping
out of your hand.
Look out for the poles of the
badminton nets.
Look out for others while swinging
15-16 racket.

Transition: Have all students retrieve a racket

16-19 from the rack. T
S S
Informing: Clear shot S S
The purpose of the forehand clear S S
is used to force your opponent to the rear S S
court. It can be played as an attacking S S
shot or as a defensive shot. The attacking S S
clear is hit faster and flatter into the rear SSSSSSSS
corners.
Similar to a throwing motion.
Turn sideways with the non-racket
foot forward.
When the shuttle is within striking
distance draw the racket back behind the
shoulder and form a throwing position.
Reach up and attack the shuttle as
early as you can hit it.
At this stage the chest should be
facing the net.
The follow through should leave
19-20 the dominant side slightly closer to the net
when you have finished the stroke.

Demonstration: Teacher will demonstrate and

20-21 then have student volunteer demonstrate the key
points of the clear shot.

Checking For Understanding:

Where are you aiming for on the
court when hitting a clear shot?
21-22 Answer: Back part of court (near
the end line)

Transition: Have students find a partner and then

one student from each partner group will retrieve
a shuttle from the rack and come back to stand
22-28 with their partner. Students will then be split into
2 people per court.

Activity 1: Clear Shot

Partners will play a modified game
of badminton where a shuttle that hits the
court in front of the hot spots is 1 point. A
shuttle that lands on a hot spot, or
anywhere inside the court behind the hot
spots is worth 2 points.
Emphasize staying in the
boundaries of your own court, so you do
not risk injury from racket being swung on
different courts.
Extension Up:
Move hula hoops around to work
on hitting all parts of the backcourt.
Extension Down:
Partners can hit the shuttle over
the net to their partner and they can
practice a clear shot.
When partner hits a clear shot
back over the net, the partner can catch
the shuttle and then hand it over the net.
Continue this process without a
28-29 rally if the partners dont feel comfortable
rallying back and forth.

Transition: *Whistle is blown to stop activity.

29-32 Students walk over to Court 1 and place
shuttles on the ground and hold rackets in their
hands.

Informing: Drop Shot

Disguising this shot is the key to its
success.
Use a big upper body turn to make
the opponent think a clear or smash is
going to be hit.
The purpose of this shot is to catch
your opponent off guard and make them
stretch out and force a weak return shot.
To execute the drop shot get
behind and in line with the shuttle and turn
side on to the net.
Have the non-racket arm in front of
the body and the racket hand should be
up behind the head.
To enable maximum disguise the
racket/body preparation should be near as
32-34 identical to how you would play a smash
or a clear.

Demonstration:
Demonstrate activity 2 so the
34-35 students understand what the goal of the
activity is. Ask for a student volunteer to
demonstrate, as well.
Checking For Understanding:
What kind of shot do you want to
pretend like youre hitting?
Answer: Clear shot or smash shot
35-43 Where should your chest be facing
when making contact with the shuttle?
Answer: Chest should be facing
the net.

Activity 2: Drop Shot

Partners will play a modified game
of badminton where a shuttle that hits the
court behind the hot spots is 1 point. A
shuttle that lands on a hot spot, or
anywhere inside the court in front of the
hot spots is worth 2 points.
Two to three hula hoops will be
placed in the frontcourt of each side of the
court.
Emphasize staying in the
boundaries of your own court, so you do
not risk injury from racket being swung on
different courts.
Extension Up:
Move the hula hoops around the
frontcourt to work on aiming to all parts.
Extension Down:
Partners can hit the shuttle over
the net to their partner and they can
practice a drop shot.
43-44 When partner hits a clear shot
back over the net, the partner can catch
the shuttle and then hand it over the net,
or let the shuttle hit the court and then
44-45 pick it back up.

Transition: *Whistle is blown to stop activity.

S S
Informing: Gameplay
S S
Singles (should have 10 courts)
S S
Doubles (if the EL teachers
SSSSSSSS
switched to 8)
5-minute games
Rally scoring
Winner moves up 1 court unless
on Court 1
Non-winner moves down a court
45-47 unless on the last court.
Purpose:
To use the shots we learned in
47-48 class to be successful in gameplay.
If doubles, come up with a strategy
to be successful (one in front, one in back)
(one on each side)

Demonstration: Demonstrate the rotation of the

winners and non-winners after the game is over.

Checking For Understanding:

Where are you moving to if you
win a game?
Answer: One court up (down a
number)
48-49 Where are you moving if you lose
a game?
Answer: Down one court (up a
number)
What is the only court you dont
move from if you win a game?
Answer: Court 1
49-50 What is the only court you dont
move from if you lose a game?
Answer: Last court
50-75
Transition: Students will go to predetermined
courts from a format the teacher set up. Teacher
will be keeping track of who won all games on a
clipboard/notebook. Remember to keep score
between the two that are playing so there are no
arguments at the end of the game.

Safety: Go over the safety with the students with

gameplay.

Activity 3: Royal of the Court

Whistle will start each game
Time will be kept on stopwatch
5 min games
75-76 Rally scoring (dont need to serve
to get a point)
Rotation will be the same that was
demonstrated in Informing section before
76-80 activity.
After every game students will stay
on court and teacher will ask who won
each game.
At the end of class, students with
the top 3 records will be announced.

Transition: *Whistle to end last game is blown.

Students put away their shuttles and come
together to fill out exit slip and go over lesson.
