Argument

As J.K. Rolling once stated, It is important to remember that we all have magic inside
us. Having grown up in a small town where nothing extraordinary ever happened, I would
always try to bring something new to my early years by seeing the world from a surreal
perspective. Ever since I was a little child, I would imagine daily tasks performed in an
imaginary way, with an immediate return to reality. Until one day, when the door to another
world opened and I was drawn in like a 5-year-old is drawn to candies and sweets.

Harry Potter has represented a milestone throughout my entire childhood. It was on a

Christmas holiday that I realized what an impact this character was going to have on my
judgement and on my social life.

After having received the complete paperback collection in 2008, I booked an entire
summer holiday to read it. I was both bewildered and amazed seeing the courage of a young boy
marching through his childhood while entering into a whole new world. With each and every
page, I started experiencing surreal broom flights and amazing spells.

A few months after I started wearing glasses, I also started being told that I was bearing a
striking resemblance to this popular character, due to my rounded glasses and similar hairstyle.
From that, things escalated pretty quickly, with some people even calling me Harry Potter at
school or around the park. I felt popular and appreciated, especially since I was receiving this
occasional attention without the slightest effort.

Reaching the present, I have come to the conclusion that The Harry Potter Series
seriously influenced my social life as well. Somehow, I managed to surround myself with people
who appreciate this magical world as much as I do. For example, my friends and I took several
online tests in order to determine which Hogwarts house we belonged to based on our own
character traits or preferences. Moreover, we started having so called matching days on which
we wore a piece of clothing corresponding to the color of a designated house. Not to mention the
exchange of numerous internet jokes related to this phenomenon.

Before I start rambling on this subject, I must confess that not even to this day am I able
to choose between the books and the movies. I do not know if it is because of the great visuals

which manage to capture the essence of the story, but I guess there is plenty of time for me to
reach a decision. I am sure that everyone knows something about this magical story; however,
there are some fascinating insights that I will bring forward in the following pages.

Introduction

Harry Potter, an 11-year-old orphan, is forced to live with his dreadful non-wizard aunt
and uncle in their typical suburban London neighbourhood, in a boxy house at number 4 Privet
Drive. On his 11th birthday, Harry finds out that he is a wizard, and he actually belongs to
another world. Each book chronicles one year of Harrys life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry. As Harry learns more about his true identity, he realizes that he is part of a
legendary confrontation between good and evil, between him and the greatest dark wizard of the
age, Lord Voldemort. With each successive novel, Harry finds himself becoming enmeshed in
battles and conflicts. The books basically become Harrys coming of age story and, with each
instalment, the decisions he and his confidants face become more difficult as the lines between
good and evil are slowly blurred.

This paper aims to tackle the subject of Harry Potter from multiple perspectives.

In the first section, I will talk about the origin of this sensation and how it emerged in the
lives of so many people around the world.

In the second section, I will outline the way numerous critics and analysts perceived this
trend as well as present some facts regarding the sales and profits made by both the books and
the movies.

The third section will be divided into multiple branches, each describing ways in which
The Harry Potter series had an impact in various fields, such as social groups, psychological
changes, fashion or tourism.

The fourth section will be as well divided into branches, each presenting the elements
which make up the magical world of Harry Potter.

The last section will include some impressive general facts regarding this whole new
universe.
