The Joyce Dickerson Student Leadership Award

The Moving Forward Together Summit Planning Team is requesting student designs and videos for the
2017 National Summit of Schools, Communities & Law Enforcement. The theme for this years summit
is Moving Forward Together. The winning student in the Design Contest and the winning student team
in the Video Contest will be recognized at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Summit on June 12-13,
2017.
Design Contest for Grades 3 through 8 One winning student entry will be recognized on stage
at the Summit, receive a plaque, participate in the Winter Disney Leadership Institute (Orlando,
FL) and be Chairwoman Dickersons distinguished guest at the Summit.
Video Contest for Grades 6 through 11 - One winning team entry (a multi-racial team of no more
than three) will be recognized on stage at the Summit, receive a plaque, participate in the Winter
Disney Leadership Institute (Orlando, FL) and be Chairwoman Dickersons and the Richland
County Councils distinguished guests at the Summit.
Districts can only submit one student entry in the Design Contest and one student team entry in
the Video Contest. All students who have their entries submitted for competition by their district
will be invited to the Summit and be recognized at the Summit from their table, receive a
certificate commending their participation, and be Chairwoman Dickersons and the Richland
County Councils guests at the Summit.

Submissions must be received by Friday, April 28, 2017 and will be assessed with the following rubric.
The winning district will be notified no later than May 22, 2017. If there are questions concerning this

Design Contest Guidelines, Submission Forms, and Rubric
Theme Design Contest Form

The design must include the following text:


Students must be enrolled in grades 3-8.
The design must include the theme of the 2017 conference with emphasis on building better
relations between school, law enforcement and communities of color.
The design must be scalable and submitted as an 8.5 x 11 inch PDF, portrait orientation, with a
inch white border.
The design must be submitted by the districts representative and accompanied by the
completed registration form.
The design must be the students original work and must not include copyrighted or otherwise
protected information material.
Districts must submit their winning entries via United States Post Service to Art/Essay Contest,
C/o Richland County Council, Kimberly Roberts, P.O. Box 192, Columbia, South Carolina,
29201 postmarked no later than Friday, April 28, 2017.
Each entrant irrevocably grants to Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence a non-exclusive, royalty-free
transferable license and right to use or modify the design in any media format, in perpetuity, worldwide
for any purpose, including advertising and publicity purposes.
This form must accompany all artwork submitted in the 2017 National Summit of Schools,
Communities, and Law Enforcement contest.

Video Contest Guidelines, Submission Forms, and Rubric
1. Each complete entry should consist of the following elements:
Video (not to exceed 3 minutes)
Complete Web Entry Form (with qualified sponsor)
Student Release Form (one for each person who appears in the video)
2. Each VIDEO submitted:
Should address the key theme of building better relations between schools, law enforcement
and communities of color
Is limited to 3 minutes, including credits
Must be uploaded to YouTube in a .mov format
3. To be considered, complete entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, April 28, 2017.
Districts must submit their winning entries via United States Post Service to Art/Essay Contest, C/o
Richland County Council, Kimberly Roberts, P.O. Box 192, Columbia, South Carolina, or emailed
to gary@blueribbonschools.com no later than midnight Friday, April 28, 2017.
4. Entries will be judged using the attached rubric.
5. Copyrights must be honored. The use of copyrighted materials (such as popular music, brand names,
and images) is NOT PERMITTED. There is a variety of copyright-free music, visuals and other
material resources that you may use.
