ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LESSON PLAN

(Adapted from Madeline Hunters Research)

Student Name: Alessia Canosa Date: February 9, 2017 Age Group: 6 7

years old
Grade: Grade 1
Unit/Subject: Understanding Structures and Mechanisms Science
Materials: (List the materials needed for this lesson)
- White Board
- White Board Marker
- Handout (Material Hunt)
- Pencils
- Pencil Crayons
Objectives: (What the students should/learn/accomplish/master/understand
as a result of the lesson)
The students will begin to identify the sources in nature of some common
materials that are used in making structures. The students will begin to
identify the materials that make up objects and structures (e.g., wood,
plastic, steel, paper, polystyrene foam, cloth)
Anticipatory Set: (In what way will you activate their prior knowledge and
experience to help them relate to todays lesson?)
- I will begin with telling the students that will be starting a new science
unit.
- I will ask the students if anyone knows what buildings are made of.
Teaching: (Step by step discussion for how the lesson will be taught)
Instructional Input:
What knowledge will you communicate to the students so that they
understand the objective of the lesson (film, tape, video, pictures, etc.)
I will tell the children we are focusing on a specific type of graph called a
pictograph. I will introduce the pictograph by showing pictures of a
pictograph and asking
- What do you notice about this graph?
- How many children chose the desired amount of fruit?
- Which fruit has more likes? And less?
Guided Practise:
What activities will the students perform under your supervision to ensure
that they are able to practise the material/concepts taught in the lesson?
How will you support students when errors are made?
As a group the students will begin to answer questions based on their prior
knowledge of structures. The children will be given a second chance to
answer the question if they are incorrect.
Modeling:
How will you demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will also be
able to do it? (Use of materials to show students examples of what is
expected as a final product of their work)
I will model the expectation of the activity by providing examples in the class
of objects made of a variety of different materials.

Checking for Understanding:

How will you check that the students have understood/learned the
objectives?
I will ask the students questions related to what was discussed as a class and
question the students on specific objects or items that could possibly be
made of two or more materials.
Questioning Strategies:
What types of questions might you ask to probe higher level thinking?
I will ask students questions related to structure such as:
- Why are building so strong? What are they made of?
- Do you think we could make a paper building? Will it be strong?
Closure:
Develop a statement that brings the lesson to an appropriate conclusion. A
statement of closure is the act of reviewing and clarifying the key points of a
lesson. It is used to:
1. Cue students to the fact that they are at the end of the lesson
2. Help organize student learning
3. Help students form a clearer picture of what the lesson is all about
- I will close the lesson by having children think of ideas of objects or
items that may be used in a future structure creation in the class.
- The children will discuss which idea they think is best and how to carry
out the plan of action.
Independent Practice:
List homework or seatwork assignments the students will be expected to
complete in order to practice the material/skill without teacher
supervision
- The children will be given a handout titled Material Hunt
Reflection:
- What went well? Provide examples for how you know it went well.
- What didnt go well? Provide examples for how you know it didnt go
well
- What did you learn?
- What might you do differently next time you implement this same
experience and why?
- Did you have to make any adaptations or modifications? If so, what
were they?
- What type of experience might you plan to extend on this one?
