Reading Assignment 3

Lesson Mastery

1) Create an effective assignment and describe it in writing. (Steps 1 & 2 only; know steps 3
& 4).
The students have been reading a book about the pros and cons of GMOs in food
production. Throughout the reading, they will be filling out a graphic organizer to keep track
of all of the pros and cons that the book states about whether genetically modified foods are
harmful or beneficial. After they finish reading the book and filling out the graphic organizer,
they will be given an assignment to create an opinion piece of writing that answers the
question Are GMOs safe? To complete this assignment, they must state their opinion on
this issue and use the evidence they found in the text to support their opinion.
Step 1 is to determine what you want the students to accomplish. Through this
assignment, I want my students to be able to take evidence from a non-fiction, fact-based text
and use it to create an educated opinion about a specific issue. Step 2 is to write each
accomplishment as a single sentence. This is usually done by using the standard to create
specific learning objectives. The 5th grade ELA standard for this assignment is 5.W.1 Write
opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
The objectives I would present to the students for this assignment are:
SWBAT
Describe an issue presented in a text using facts and evidence from the text
Construct an argument for or against the use of genetically modified food that is
supported by evidence from the text.
Create an organizationally structured text that groups ideas to support the writers
purpose.

2) Create a criterion-referenced test for some content the students have or will be studying.

Standard
5.NF.B.6 Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed
numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

Test

1) A 5th grade class is going on a field trip. 1/3 of the students want ham sandwiches for
lunch. Of those students, 1/2 do not want mustard on their sandwich. What fraction of
students want a ham sandwich with mustard? Use a fraction model to represent the
problem and solve.

2) A recipe for a batch of cookies calls for 3/8 cup of sugar. How much sugar would be
needed to make 2/5 batch of cookies? Use a fraction model to represent the problem and
solve.
3) Last night, John spent 2 hours doing homework. Sarah did homework for 1/2 as many
hours as John did. How many hours did Sarah spend doing homework? Write an equation
to represent the problem and solve.

4) You have 10 pencils and want to give 1/2 of the pencils to a friend. How many pencils do
you give to your friend? Write an equation to represent the problem and solve.
