STUDENTS UNION
8 March 2017
More than 50% of the University of Mauritius graduates were unemployed six months after
leaving university, while most of them took jobs as call center operators, cleaners, shelf-stackers
and other such small jobs.
Young graduates are struggling to find work that matches their skills and adapt to the current
job market. The overall employment prospects for graduates had reached pre-crisis levels and
prospects for graduates could worsen next year amid early signs of the weakening labour market.
A List of Indicative Priority Fields of Study (LIPFS) has been published by the Tertiary
Education Commission and highlights the countrys priority for the next few years.
The LIPFS 2017/2019 (annexed I) is composed of new fields of study that have a greater job
prospects for employing a higher number of graduates.
The Students Union has a moral obligation towards our prospective graduates and graduates of
the University. A request to the senate is being made to start developing a number of new

programmes and allow the University to act as the leading tertiary institution and continue on
our path to provide knowledge at the service of our nation.
Most of programmes in the LIPFS are not offered in Mauritius and students will to go abroad
for these. It is also worth to note that the current postgraduate programmes offered by the
University have failed to attract many students and the number of postgraduate students have
drastically decrease throughout the years.
A list of potential undergraduate programmes that could have been offered at the
University of Mauritius is listed below:
