Within this dance medicine experimental study, I hope to discover the best mechanism for
predicting injuries in dancers between a screening and past medical history. I will be using a
questionnaire, observation, and experiment to shape a final decision. The questionnaire will take
the form of a permission slip as well as a way to collect the dancers past medical history. For the
observation, I will be recording the dancers performing a functional screening and later
analyzing the screenings for malalignments. In all, this will be turned into a formal experiment
so that a correct answer will be formed. Theoretically, this will be presented to the directors of
the Studio Dans Dance Company, director and dancers of the River Hill High School Dance
Company, and attenders of the Student Learning Conference.

Procedure:
1. Study dancer specific injuries, including what characteristics are causing injuries,
what are the best treatments for these injuries, and how can we prevent them in the first
place.
2. Focus on a comparison of malalignment and past medical history and their ability
to predict injury.
3. Ask and receive permission to utilize the Studio Dans Dance Company as the
subjects for the experiment.
4. Send out overview of experiment, permission slip, and past medical injury history
to the parents of the Studio Dans Dance Company.
5. Receive and review permission slips and medical histories of those given
permission to participate in the study.
6. Record dancers performing 5 one legged squats and 5 one legged hops on both the
right and left legs and later analyze for improper alignment during either of the tasks.
7. Track dancers injuries over the course of the competitive dance season (January -
March). This will be done by sending a questionnaire to the teachers, parents, and
students at the end of January.
8. Analyze compiled data to determine if incorrect alignment or the dancers past
medical history is a better predictor of injury.
9. Compile findings into a comprehensive paper detailing findings and proposed
answer.
10. Present findings and conclusion to the dancers and director(s) of the Studio Dans
Dance Company and River Hill Dance Company and possibly publish to dance teachers
in the surrounding area.
