Vaccines

Controversy and the Future

Vaccines through the years
Vaccines work.

Many diseases have been totally or almost

eradicated following widespread use of
vaccines.

For more information on where we are

winning or losing check out vaccine data.
How do vaccines work?
Vaccines use your natural ability to fight off disease. We just need to recruit
your immune system with an inactive portion of the disease (the antigen) and
your body will manufacture weapons (antibodies) to tag and destroy diseases
invading your body.

But do vaccines decrease death?
Over the years, as Typhoid and Diphtheria have

new vaccines have

dropped immensely from
about 400,000 deaths to 0
due to the innovation of

been introduced, vaccines.

death rates due to

disease have
dropped.

Herd Immunity
It is important to have
enough people vaccinated
to buffer people that are
not vaccinated against
those that have the
disease.

Are vaccines linked to Autism?
Some studies linked vaccines to autism, but these have since been disproven. Despite these
corrections many still believe the autism link. It is interesting that this is more prevalent in
younger people who were not alive to see vaccines eradicate diseases.

Vaccine Exemption
Utah ranks high in states choosing
not to vaccinate their children. This
may lead to a reemergence of
vaccine preventable diseases like
measles or whooping cough.

immunize their children
measles cases began to rise.

Other reasons to not choose vaccination
But, autism is not the only reason
to choose not to vaccinate. Many
in Utah make the choice not to
vaccinate against HPV a sexually
transmitted virus that can lead to
prostate and cervical cancer. This
may be because of a belief their
children will only have one sexual
partner and not have a chance of
getting the disease. https://kaiserfamilyfoundation.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/7602-07-figure-31.png
The Future
With more people exempting their children
from vaccines we can expect to see a return
of many vaccine preventable diseases.
Diseases like whooping cough, measles, Measles
mumps, polio, rubella will be more common.
Vaccines are not only in the best interest of
your children, but also your community.
