The paper discusses about the implementation of small group


discussion method in teaching reading, especially in improving
students reading comprehension. The aims of the research are to
know the students reading comprehension at the tenth grade
students of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh before and after the teaching learning
process used small group discussion method and to know the
implementation of small group discussion method in teaching reading
at the grade students of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh.
In this research the writer used experimental research, it was pre-
experimental design 2. The step of this research are conducting pre-
test, treatment, and post-test. The form of pre-test and post-test is
multiple choice, with 20 questions. The writer conducted two
treatments. The population of this research are 360 students and the
sample were is 39 from X-3 of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh.
The result of this study showed that the students reading
comprehension at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh before using Small
Group Discussion method is 68,71. And after using Small Group
Discussion method, students score of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh become 90.
The result of t-count is 14,660. Then, the result of t-table is 2,024. It
indicated that t-count was higher than t-table (14,660>2,024) and it
mean the small group discussion method improved the students
reading comprehension. The procedures of small group discussion
method were preparing pictures related the topic to activate the
students background knowledge, preparing students to make a
group consist of 4 person, asking the students about pictures and
students fill the question, introducing the text descriptive to be read,
and explains about components the descriptive text, asking the
students to read the text and find out generic structure descriptive
text, asking the students to do the task in a group, asking the
students leader to present the answer of their task in front of the
class.
Based on the result above, it can be concluded that small group
discussion method method could improve reading comprehension of
the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Jatitujuh. In addition, the subjects also

responded positively the implementation of small group discussion
method. The researcher suggested that the English teacher is
expected can use small group discussion method to teach the
students in reading comprehension.
