THERMODYNAMICS BY CLASSICAL MECHANICS

The pressure of a gas on the container can be assumed to be the result of force exerted by the gas
molecule on the container when they collide elastically and changes their momentum. This can be
viewed as, if N number of balls collide with the wall/sec, then F = 2NmV.

Now consider a situation, where the space is separated into two parts by a semi permeable
membrane (allows N 2 to pass but does not allow O 2 to pass) with temperature T 1 and T 2
(T 2 < T 1 ) respectively as shown in diagram.

8RT
The velocity of molecule at any temperature is given by V = . R is a constant.
M
M is the molecular mass of the gas. If n 1 molecules of O 2 and n 2 molecules of N 2 collides with
semi permeable membrane per second then (Assume equal number of moles of N 2 in both
chambers).

11. The average force exerted by O 2 molecule on the membrane is:

8RT1 8RT1
(A) n1Mo 2 (B) 2n1Mo 2
Mo 2 Mo 2
8RT2 8RT2
(C) n1Mo 2 (D) 2n1Mo 2

12. The direction of net force on the membrane due to (N 2 +O 2 ) will be :-

(A) Towards left (B) Towards right
(C) Zero (D) Cant be determined

PARAGRAPH FOR QUESTION NO 13 & 14

Let us identify the system as the spacecraft and the Earth but not the portion of the fuel in the
spacecraft that we use to change the orbit. In a given orbit, the mechanical energy of the spacecraft
Earth system is given by
GMm
E=
2r
This energy includes the kinetic energy of the spacecraft and the potential energy associated with the
gravitational force between the spacecraft and the Earth. If the rocket engines are fired, the thrust
force moves the spacecraft through a displacement. As a result, the mechanical energy of the
spacecraft Earth system increases.
The spacecraft has a new higher energy but is constrained to be in an orbit that includes the original
starting point. It cannot be in a higher energy circular orbit having a larger radius because this orbit
would not contain the starting point. The only possibility is that the orbit is elliptical as shown in the
figure.

Above equation gives the energy of the spacecraft Earth system for an elliptical orbit where a is
semi-major axis. Thus if we know the new energy of the orbit, we can find the semi-major axis of the
elliptical orbit. Conversely. If we know the semi-major axis of an elliptical orbit we would like to
achieve. We can calculate how much additional energy is required from the rocket engines.
A spacecraft is moving in a circular orbit around the Earth (Radius 6400 km) at a height of 300 km
from the surface. To place the spacecraft in an elliptical orbit, the modulus of the mechanical
energy of the spacecraft-Earth system is decreased by 10.0%.

13. If the spacecraft earth system had initial energy (-E 0 ), then the total mechanical energy of the
system after firing the rocket will be:
(A) -1.1 E 0 (B) -0.9 E 0 (C) E 0 (D) None of these

14. Minimum distance of the spacecraft from the surface of the Earth is:
(A) 900 km (B) 1474 km (C) 300 km (D) 1773 km
