Science and Technology Career Assignment; Grade 10

Step-by-Step Description

STEP 1: WHERE TO START

Choose a career that interests you. This is a fun and informative project that uses your research
skills. It is recommended that you take notes in Microsoft Word under separate headings. If you use sheets
of paper, use a separate sheet for each of these categories. You may also use the attached question sheet, but
be aware the worksheet may not have enough room to fit all your information. This assignment may be done in
groups of 2 or individually. All citations should follow MLA format.

STEP 2: FINDING A CAREER

1) Go to http://www.alis.gov.ab.ca/
2) Scroll down to the High School Students section and select What Am I Good At?
3) Select Self-Assessment Tools
4) On the right is a box labelled Explore Careers click on Education Program
5) Search for the term Science or Technician
6) Pick a job title from either list that you are interested in

STEP 3: RECORDING YOUR INFORMATION

7) Fill out worksheet with relevant information

9) Education/Training Requirements
10) Opportunities for Advancement
11) Salary/Earnings/Benefits
12) Description of A Typical day in the life of a person in my career choice
13) Bibliography: A listing of all sources must be submitted in proper M.L.A. format. A format sheet will
be handed out.

PRESENTATION METHODS
VISUAL PRESENTATION/JOB FAIR PRESENTATION

A three-sided poster board must be designed to hold all career information in text form and be
accompanied by related pictures, graphs and diagrams. May contain hand drawn images or computer printed
format. The poster must contain the information (in paragraph or bullet form) in each of the five areas.

2. Description of Career
3. Educational/Training requirements
4. Opportunities within the career
5. Salary/Earnings/Benefits
6. A Typical day in the life of

MOCK INTERVIEW

With a partner select an interesting occupation. One person will be the interviewer and one person will be
the person employed in that specific career. The Interview should last roughly 5 minutes. Suggested questions
are listed below. You can add questions related to your interests, concerns and information researched.

1. How long have you worked in this occupation?


2. What other occupations did you work previously?
3. Do you primarily work with people, data, things or ideas?
4. What do you like most about your job?
5. How did you get started in this line of work?
6. What personal qualities do you feel are needed to succeed in this line of work?
7. What type of training is needed for this occupation today?
8. What changes in your occupation have you seen occur?
9. What are the most frequently recurring problems on your job?
10. 10.What type of technology do you use? (computer hardware, software, etc.)

POWER POINT/PREZI

Create a Power Point or Prezi presentation about the career that you chose. Example of slide
progression could be as follows. Present the Power Point or Prezi to the Class

1) Introduction - A title slide including the career you chose, your name, and the class name
2) Description and Details in-depth and detailed examples to provide a full picture of the career
3) Education and Training the education and training needed for the job chosen
4) Salary and benefits potential earnings in various places and related job choices
5) Personal Interest detailed rationale of why and how the career in interesting
6) Conclusion/Typical day in the Life
7) Bibliography list the sources you used using MLA citation format

ESSAY WITH SPEECH

The primary goal of an investigative essay is to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the subject in
an unbiased manner. Doing this requires performing significant research. Essay format may be as follows;
introduction, headlined sections with titles from rubric, conclusion and bibliography. 2-3 pages in length
excluding bibliography.
