ED568A Lesson #2

Teacher: Ms. Prindle

Subject/Grade Level: Mathematics, Kindergarten

CC Standard Addressed: (K.G.1) Correctly name shapes regardless of

their orientations or overall size.

Learning Target: Students will be able to identify a variety of different

shapes including circles, triangles, rectangles, cubes, cylinders, spheres,
hexagons, and cones regardless of the shapes orientation or size.

Time Required: Two thirty-minute blocks

Materials Needed:

- Shape Detective Packet (Attached to this Lesson, 1 Copy per

student)
o If helpful have the shape names next to each of the objects on
the worksheet, so that students can circle the correct shape of
each object. Writing down the shape name is great, but might be
time consuming for students.
- Station Numbers (1-5 or 6)
- A variety of different shapes/objects for students to identity at each
station
o 4 objects should be at each station (In total have 20/25 objects
approximately around the classroom)
- Labels for Each Object
- Timer

Activities:

Part One: Explain Todays Activity: Shape Detectives (15 minutes)

1. As an entire class students will come together and sit on the floor (likely
in a reading corner), while the teacher sits in a chair in front of the students
to go over todays math activity
2. The teacher should explain to the students that they are going to be
identifying different shapes through objects that have been placed in
different areas around the classroom. Its Scavenger Hunt Time
Note: All objects need to be placed around the room for students
to discover previously and preferably while students arent in the
classroom. Furthermore, all of the objects that are placed in that
station for students to find should be on the floor and not hiding,
so that students know what shapes they need to identify
Label each of the objects before hand in some way, so that they
are easily identifiable by the students
3. Explain to all students that they will be assigned to groups (no more than
4 in a group) and travel around the classroom to the different numbered
stations. (There should be 5/6 stations, with clear numbers marking where
students need to be) Point out to the students where the different numbered
stations are located as well.
4. Each student is now a shape detective, and must as a group go around
to the different stations and identify the different shapes that are before
them. Each student will be responsible for writing what the shape of each
object is. (Students will record their answers on their worksheet)
5. Before sending students off to their 1st station, use chart paper (already
drawn and labeled previously) to go over with students the different shapes
that they will be identifying and what each shape is called
Note: Before this activity students need to have a basis
understanding of the different shapes and should have a firm
grasp on the types of different shapes.
6. Hand each student their Shape Detective packet that will contain one
page with all of the different shapes labeled as well as a second page with
the number of each station and a list of the objects that the students will
find there.
7. Have students get into their groups (no more than 4 students in a group)
and send them to their 1st station.

Part Two: Scavenger Hunt: Shape Detectives (35min)

1. Students will have approximately 6 minutes at each station (This means

that each student will be able to go to 5 stations and have time to transition
to each station)
2. While at the stations students will observe the objects that are there.
They can touch them, play with them, but ultimately students needs to
locate the object that they find on their worksheet and identify what shape it
is. *Remind students that they have all the names of the shapes and how to
spell them in their packet, so they should be able to write the shapes name
on the line next to the object easily
3. Make sure to be walking around the room to each of the stations to
overhear conversations that the students are having, identify where students
might be having difficulty, and assist students when needed
4. After 6 minutes go by, instruct students to stop what they are doing and
get ready to move to the next station (students should go to the next higher
numbered station, unless they are at station 61)

Part Three: Class Discussion (10minutes)

1. After students have been to each station, all students should come back
to where the activity began
2. Start discussion by asking students which objects they found to be easy
to identify and which shapes were hard to identify? What made the objects
hard to identify?
3. Did any students notice that shapes come in all different sizes? How were
they able to identify the shapes?
4. End the activity by encouraging students to go home and look for shapes,
look for shapes outside when they go home, look for them when there in the
car out the window, and look for them around the classroom each and
everyday. Students should walk away having learned that shapes come in all
different sizes and that there is no one-size fits all for shapes!
5.Challenge students to bring in different objects they find interesting or
discuss at the beginning of the next math time about the different
shapes/objects that students have found.

Evaluation of Student Learning:

1. Observe students while they are working at each station. Evaluate each
student and take notes on a stick-note to remember where students are
struggling or having difficulty mastering certain shapes or concepts. Also
note any areas that might need to be revisited in future lessons
2. Ask students clarifying questions as groups are working at their stations.
What shape is that? Is the shape still the same no matter which way you
hold it or rotate it? Identify if there are any shapes that students are having
a hard time identifying and bring that object up at the end of the class
during class discussion time
3. Examine students individual answers that they have turned in on their
worksheet. Have students identified the correct shape? What shapes are
they struggle with? Did students have a hard time writing the shapes
names?
