Common Core Standards

1. In Grades 6-12, the Standards are divided into 2 sections. What are the 2 sections
and why are they broken into 2 sections? (Intro p. 4)
Grades 6-12 are divided into two sections: one for ELD and the other for history/social studies,
science and technical subjects. According to the standards intro, the division reflects the unique,
place of ELA teachers in developing students literacy skills while at the same time recognizing
that teachers in other areas must have a role in this development as well.

2. Why is there greater attention on: 1) reading informational text and 2) writing to
persuade and to explain in the Common Core ELA Standards? (Intro p. 5)
Research shows that reading informational text and writing to persuade and explain link directly
to student growth toward college and career readiness.
NAEP: Assessment that 4th grade readers take. Results show that students score naturally lower
on though, which is why CC focuses on these two subject.

3. What should we expect to see in college and career ready students in Reading,
Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language? (Intro p. 7)
They demonstrate independence.
They build strong content knowledge
They respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline.
They comprehend as well as critique.
They value evidence
They use technology and digital media strategically and capably
They come to understand other perspectives

Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension
Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research.
Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration
Language: Conventions, effective use, and vocabulary
