GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES

EL GERUNDIO
ES LA FORMA VERBAL TERMINADA EN -ing QUE FUNCIONA COMO UN SUSTANTIVO. SE USA:

1. COMO SUJETO DE UNA ORACIN, HABLANDO DE HECHOS EN GENERAL.


Living in London is expensive. (= Vivir en Londres es caro)

2. DETRS DE CIERTOS VERBOS.


Admit, avoid, carry on, detest, dislike, enjoy, finish, hate, give up, go on, imagine, involve, keep (on), like, love, mind,
miss, prefer, recommend, resist, risk, suggest.
He likes sailing. (= A l le gusta navegar)

3. DETRS DE PREPOSICIONES.
He apologized for being late. (= Se disculp por llegar tarde)

4. DETRS DE ALGUNAS FORMAS VERBALES.


Be / get used to, be fed up with, be fond of, be good/bad at, cant help, cant stand, dont / wouldnt mind, feel like,
its no use / no good, its (not) worth, look forward to, succeed in, spend (time), think about/of, what about...?
This book is worth reading it. (=Merece la pena leer este libro)

EL INFINITIVO
ES LA FORMA VERBAL PRECEDIDA DE to. SE USA:
1. COMO SUJETO DE UNA ORACIN, HABLANDO DE UN HECHO CONCRETO.
To apply for that job would be a good idea. (= Solicitar ese trabajo sera una buena idea)

2. DETRS DE CIERTOS VERBOS.


Afford, agree, appear (=seem), arrange, ask, care, choose, decide, expect, fail, hope, hesitate, hope, learn, manage,
neglect, plan, prepare, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, swear, want, wish.
Im planning to move to a different city. (=Estoy planeando mudarme a otra ciudad)

3. DETRS DE ADJETIVOS Y ADVERBIOS.


Able, afraid, amazed, angry, busy, delighted, disgusted, disappointed, glad, happy, likely, obliged, ready, sorry,
supposed, surprised, tired, unable.
Im glad to be here. (= Estoy encantado de estar aqu)

4. DETRS DEL COMPLEMENTO INDIRECTO DE VERBOS COMO:


Advise, ask, encourage, expect, forbid, help, invite, order, persuade, remind, teach, tell, warn, want, would like, would
love, would prefer.
I advised Sara to study harder.(= Le aconsej a Sara que estudiara ms)

* MAKE, LET , llevan el infinitivo sin to.


He made me smile.(= l me hizo sonreir)

* Algunos verbos de percepcin: HEAR, FEEL, SEE, SMELL, WATCH, pueden llevar el infinitivo sin to o el gerundio.
I heard the birds sing/ singing. (= Escuch a los pjaros cantar)

* WOULD RATHER / HAD BETTER van seguidos de infinitivo sin to.


Id rather stay at home (= Preferira quedarme en casa)
Youd better go to the doctor. (= Lo mejor que puedes hacer es ir al mdico)
VERBOS SEGUIDOS DE GERUNDIO O INFINITIVO SIN CAMBIO DE SIGNIFICADO.
Begin, start, bother, can't bear, continue, forbid, intend, propose, start.
He began studying/to study two hours ago. (= Empez a estudiar hace dos horas)

*Hate, like, love, prefer van seguidos de infinitivo/ gerundio. Sin embargo, would hate/ like/ love / prefer van seguidos
de infinitivo con to.
I like swimming/to swim. (Aunque el gerundio es ms comn). (= Me gusta nadar)
I'd like to swim. (=Me gustara nadar)

VERBOS SEGUIDOS DE GERUNDIO O INFINITIVO CON CAMBIO DE SIGNIFICADO.


STOP
+ gerundio: dejar de hacer algo.
+ infinitivo: parar para hacer otra cosa.
I stopped smoking. (= Dej de fumar)
I stopped to have a coffee. (Par para tomar un caf)

TRY
+ gerundio: experimentar, probar:
+ infinitivo: intentar:
I tried turning off the computer to see if it worked. (= Prob apagando el ordenador para ver si funcionaba)
I tried to open the window, but I couldnt. (= Intent abrir la ventana, pero no pude)

ALLOW and PERMIT


+ gerundio: cuando no se menciona a la persona.
+ infinitivo: cuando se menciona a la persona.
She doesn't allow eating in the classroom.(= Ella no permite comer en clase)
She doesn't allow her students to eat in the classroom.(Ella no permite que sus alumnos coman en clase)

REGRET, REMEMBER and FORGET


+ gerundio: cuando la accin expresada por el gerundio tiene lugar antes que la expresada por el verbo que le precede.
+ infinitivo:cuando la accin expresada por el infinitivo no tiene lugar antes que la expresada por el verbo que le precede.
I remember locking the door before I left (= Recuerdo haber cerrado la puerta antes de marcharme)
Remember to post the letter (=Recuerda enviar la carta por correo).
