Project 1: Positive Poster Design

Suggested Theme: Advocation
Promoting a Positive Message
In this project, you will create a poster design drawing that promotes a
positive school message, such as an anti-bully campaign. Your goal is to
create a design which showcases:

Strong, Thoughtful, and Original Message

Positive and Negative Space to Create Interest
Texture by Using Mark Making Techniques (Stippling, Hatching, Cross-Hatching, Scumbling)
Inclusion of a Figure (Animated or Realistic)
A Balanced and Unified Composition
High Quality Craftsmanship

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Brainstorm Your Theme

Choose your message. Some examples are: Stand Strong Together, Rise Above Bullying, & Break the
Silence. Aim to create an original message, which makes the view think.

Step 2: Design Your Compositions

Be sure your design is interesting and captures your viewers attention for a length of time. In other words, your
message should be thoughtful, not exactly immediately obvious. To do so, use different
symbols/objects/subjects/scenes to hint at your message. Then determine: Have you include areas of
interesting positive/negative space? Have you included a figure? Is your composition balanced? Unified?
When finished, conference with me before getting your final piece of paper.

Step 3: Sketch Your Final Composition

Sketch your final composition on drawing paper. Be sure to sketch lightly so the pencil marks are easy to erase
away.

Step 4: Outline Your Designs and Add Value

Outline appropriate designs in thin and thick sharpie. Note, thicker outlines will stand out more than thinner
outlines. Therefore, outline areas you want to emphasize with the thick sharpie. Add color using sharpie
marker or colored pencil. Then, use mark making techniques to add value and texture.

Step 5:Turn-In Your Project

Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
