NDUBA LANDFILL

Nduba dump site located in Gasabo District. The site covers an area of 1.3 hectares.

I. INTRODUCTION

The new Nduba hill landfill started operating in May after the Nyanza landfill was closed down.
The Nyanza landfill was located in Kicukiro District. Poor planning is blamed for the problems
that saw the Nyanza landfill close down.

Kigali currently has about one million people to expand to three million. This will triple the
amount of rubbish produced. The citys one million people produce about 100 tons of waste.
Background

Nduba dumpsite is located in Muremure Cell, Nduba Sector in Gasabo District. The Rwf1.3b
facility replaced the decade-old Nyanza-Kicukiro dumping site.

The newly proposed landfill in Muremure Cell, Nduba Sector Gasabo District is estimated to
cost Rwf 1.3 billion, started at July 2015.kigali city produces around 450 tons per day of solid
waste of which between 300 and 350 tons day is centrally collected.

The existing landfill at Nyanza was established by informal means and does not meet current
standards; it is unlined and has no leachate provisions. It also requires expropriation of land to be
able to accommodate the growth of waste pile which is assumed to be increasing at
approximately 2.25 times at the current generation rate. This practice cannot go on for long and
this is the crux of the problem where an alternative that is sustainable and appropriate must be
found. One of the possible alternative is the establishment of a waste treatment and recycling
plant , because the current land fill is not safe and sustainable given the rate of waste generation
that increases in line increasing prosperity and affluence of Kigali residents.

The Engineering Regiment will undertake the first phase of the construction and the
development of the site at a cost of Rwf 450 million. After the completion of the first phase,
cleaning companies will be allowed to begin dumping wastes at the new site.

The Nduba landfill is currently the only facility in Kigali that deals with collected solid waste
and human waste and is managed by PIVOT Limited and FONERWA Company.

The dumpsite employs 120 workers who work in two shift rotations.

1. PIVOT PROJECT
PIVOT project is focused on human waste management. This project aims to develop the
framework and relating infrastructure to make the waste management socially and
environmentally more sustainable.

Human waste, also known as human excreta, is a waste type usually used to refer to
byproducts of digestion, such as feces and urine. There are many different ways in which human
waste can be collected, treated and disposed or reused, depending on the sanitation system that is
in place. The situation differs vastly across the world, with many people in developing countries
having to resort to open defecation for lack of other options where the human waste is deposited
in the environment, while others can use flush toilets where the human waste is mixed with
water, transported and treated in sewage treatment plants.

2. FONERWA Project
Every day, more than 100 ton of waste is brought to the landfill site in Kigali, located in Nyanza.
At present, it is the only facility in Kigali that is dealing with collected solid waste. However,
due to lack of proper facility and treatment skills, the gathered waste is just discarded to the site
and the accumulation is creating new hills of waste. As a result, there are issues such as bad odor
and methane gas explosions, and risks of garbage landslides, groundwater pollution, etc.

The objective of the trip:

II. METHODES USED

Recycling
Landfilling
Incineration

The most common method of human waste treatment in Nduba landfill areas where municipal
sewage systems are unavailable is the use of septic tank systems
Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, primarily from
household sewage. PIVOT Project Company includes physical, chemical, and biological
processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or
treated effluent). A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry,
called sewage sludge that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or
land application.

Waste collection system:

Solid waste treatment and recycling
Estimation solid waste amount arriving at landfill by origin
Waste composition at Nduba landfill
Sustainability of solid waste management

. It also requires expropriation of land to be able to accommodate the growth of

waste pile which is assumed to be increasing at approximately 2.25 times at the
current generation rate. This practice cannot go on for long and this is the crux of
the problem where an alternative that is sustainable and appropriate must be
found.

One of the possible alternative is the establishment of a waste treatment and

recycling plant , because the current land fill is not safe and sustainable given the
rate of waste generation that increases in line increasing prosperity and affluence of
Kigali residents.

IV. DISCUSSION

The improper waste management can result into the following;

Bad odor

Methane gas explosions

Risks of garbage landslides

Groundwater pollution

The Nduba hill dump site has blamed the insufficient number of security guards for the increase
in the of residents accessing the site and retrieving items to sell

V. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

The project will carry out Community based waste management and establish the waste
treatment and recycling plant for the landfill site located in Nduba sector, the community
will replant trees on water catchment areas in Gasabo district. Briquettes and manure
produced from waste recycled will contribute in social entrepreneurship and the
sustainable development of the community. From this project, local community and the
whole country will participate in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Human waste in the form of wastewater (sewage) is used to irrigate and fertilize fields in
many parts of the developing world where fresh water is unavailable
Urgent measures regarding the management of this dumping site are required in
order to avoid any unwanted accidents or diseases which may be caused by the
lack of appropriate sanitation measures at this particular site.
