 Sonoma County distilling Co.
f ounded in 2010, Sonoma County Distilling Company is now
considered one of the pioneers in craft whiskey-makingnot
just here in Sonoma County, but in all of California. Every aspect
of their distillation process is done with intention and
authenticity. The distillery takes great pride in how their
whiskeys are crafted and shares with its drinkers on the bottle
labels mash bill each type of grain used, the aging time in new,
charred American Oak barrels and colorful tasting notes and
cocktail suggestions.
Their collection of rye, wheat and bourbon whiskeys are
crafted with a grain-to-glass philosophy meaning every step of
the production is done in-house. Using only the finest non-
GMO and organic grains from across California, traditional
direct-fire copper pot stills, the purest spring water from the
Sierras and harnessing the coastal influences found in the unique
terroir of Sonoma Countythis is whiskey the way it was meant
to be made.
The steel-toed boots and Dungarees are not just for show.
The pot stills are lit at 3 a.m. to ensure they reach the correct
temperature prior to the distillation of the mash. Grains are
milled on-site; each bottle hand-filled and labeled. Every visitor
in the tasting room is greeted with a drop of whiskey and a smile.
The distillery is open for sales and tastings without
reservations and tours of their production facility (by
appointment) are a must-do when visiting. Youll even come
away with a souvenir crystal whiskey glass as a memento of your
tour, not to mention, a deeper appreciation of California craft

I f you havent been up to Fritz Underground Winery
lately, then youre in for a treat when you arrive and
explore their collection of new tasting experiences and
events. The newly renovated and modern-design tasting
room is perched atop a hill at the estate, with their
outdoor tasting patio boasting gorgeous views of Dry
Creek Valley. Pack a picnic and enjoy a wine by-the-glass
from their tasting menu when visiting.
Built in the late 1970s by namesake, Mr. Jay Arthur
Fritz, the winery was way ahead of its time. It was built
with sustainability in mind the three-level winery was
built into the side of a hill, which naturally controls the
interior temperatures. This three level construction also
allows the winemaker to craft great wines with gravity
flow, thus eliminating the need for using pumps to move
the wines. Not using pumps equals using less electricity
and results in wines without harsh tannins.
Now run by Jays son, Clayton, the winery is still
dedicated to sustainability and producing excellent wines.
This place is really worth visiting! The wines are great,
the building is unique, the picnic area is picturesque and
the staff is fabulous!
The tasting room staff is happy to discuss the history
of the winery, the methods of sustainable winemaking
used at Fritz and a myriad of other topics.

 Trattore farms: Wine and Olive Oil
New Tasting Room, Winery and Olive Mill
T rattore Farms recently moved to their estate vineyard after many
years of construction.
The tasting room leads to an outdoor patio with expansive views
of the premier winegrowing region of Dry Creek Valley, synonymous
with Zinfandel. There, owner Tim Bucher sustainably farms 15 acres
of vineyards to produce small-lot vintages of Rhne varietals such as
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier.
With 10 acres of olive orchards ranging from one to 180 years old,
oil is produced on-site with both Italian stone and hammer mills.
The tasting room is the scenic backdrop for casual or intimate
gatherings. A wood-fired pizza oven and culinary kitchen provide
capabilities for gourmet wine, olive oil and food pairings.
Buchers ties to the music industry, as chairman of the GRAMMY
Foundation, bring well-known acts such as The Band Perry and Eric
Church. The Foundation helps support music programs in public
schools, something near and dear to Tim. Trattore also hosts Farm Aid
House Concerts in support of family farms with John Mellencamp
performing in 2015 and Grace Potter who performed at the winery in
spring of 2016.
Protecting the environment is high on Buchers priority list.
Trattore, which means tractor in Italian, runs on solar power, and all
irrigation uses recycled water. Coming from a family of Swiss
immigrant farmers, Bucher understands the need to protect the land
for future generations. He uses his background in technology and
engineering to make sure his operations are efficient and
sustainable. But that technology is all behind the scenes. Visitors to
Trattore will feel welcomed like family, invited to take a relaxing
break with a fine glass of wine and a breathtaking view of the

In 1959, Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery
bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine
industry.
Their passion for sustainable farming practices, solar power
and other green business practices made them Sonoma
Countys rst carbon neutral winery.
Rod Strong was a famous dancer during the 1940s and
spent most of his career in Paris. When he returned to the
U.S. in 1951 his passion for dance eventually turned to
French food and ne wine. In 1959, he retired from dance
and began his new career in winemaking. When asked why,
Rod explained, I knew I couldnt be an old dancer, but I
could be an old winemaker.

f rom May through November, The Wine Carriage is a
fun, intimate excursion through select vineyards of the
Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Owner and well-
informed tour guide Bret LeRolland, is coachman of a
shade-top carriage pulled by mighty draft horses
meandering between rows of vines and up and down
scenic countryside while guests pluck grapes right from

T he winery estate on Westside Road in Healdsburg is located in
the heart of Russian River Valley; a premiere growing region

for Moshin Vineyards winemaker and owner Rick Moshin, who

Moshin, a former math professor at San Jose State University

L ocated in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Olivet
Road has been home to the De Loach family for 35 years.
Cecil De Loach was a firefighter in San Francisco for 16 years
and in 1970, he and his wife Christine bought their first 24-
acre vineyard in Sonoma County and started second careers
as winegrowers. Five years later they made their first wine
and they went on to build one of the countrys most
successful, popular and iconic wine brands.
In 2003, with the De Loach Vineyards brand one of the
biggest in the country, the De Loach family decided to start
over. They sold their eponymous winery and concentrated
on Hook & Ladder, which theyd started 20 years earlier with
a Port. In 2004, they opened Hook & Ladder on Olivet Road
on the first property the family purchased, next to the
historic Barbieri Ranch.
Cecil retired from firefighting in 1982, but there are lots
of firefighter themes at Hook & Ladder, including fire
department patches and t-shirts from visiting firefighters
decorating the tasting room. Now, three generations of the
De Loach family keep Hook & Ladder to just 25,000-case
annually.
As part of their philosophy of keeping it simple to help
keep prices down, the informal and friendly tasting room
occupies a part of the winery itself. As to the wine? Medals,
loyal followers and enthusiastic newcomers to the wines are

In 1853, world-traveler Pierre Pellier sailed from the port of La

The majority of our grapes come from
independent growers that are known for their love of
what they do, they share our vision to produce the
best. Our winemaking practices are bent on quality,
fanatical some say...we're not driven by the bottom
line. We employ modern as well as ancient
techniques in our winemaking, and grape growing.
We sort of wear blinders, we don't pay attention to
what everybody else is doing. We have noticed a
pattern over the years, a large number of wineries
and grape growers are affected by what others do and
say...the latest trend, the hottest varietal, the newest
process. There's no shortage of opinions out there,
alcohol to high or pH to low, filtered or unfiltered.
Winemaking is primarily the same as it was since
before the birth of Christ...it's an organic process,
totally natural. It's the winemakers perception of
quality that makes the difference, it's our definition
of what tastes good, same as yours that's what
matters in the end. Put our wines to the test and see

T he Cochon Tasting Bar nestled in the heart of
downtown Sonoma allows visitors to explore
many unusual varietals and wines not often found in
wine country.
The tasting bar features flights, wines by the taste
and by the glass. Wines are handcrafted in small lots
and varietals include wines from the south of
France, the Iberian Peninsula and unique vineyard
sites sourced in Sonoma, Napa and California.
Brands featured include Odisea, Cochon and
Gardienne des Vignes.
In 2004, longtime wine industry friends Adam
Webb and Mike Kuenz, made their first handshake
deal to buy grapes from two rows in an Old Vine
Grenache vineyard in Amador County, and so began
their winemaking odyssey.
Originally, the focus of Odisea was on making
Spanish-styled wines from the best California
Spanish varietal vineyards they could find. Adam
found some amazing Albarino, Tempranillo, Verdejo,
Graciano and Garnacha along the way from growers
that shared their passion for Rhne varieties and had
taken the chance, on these lesser known grapes.

The name Cochon, is the loving French word for hog,
and it is also featured in the winemaking process.
During initial trials with Rhne grape varieties
experimented with larger French oak barrels more
typical of the Rhne region and not commonly used in
California wine country.
The large, unique shaped hogshead barrels, nicknamed
hogs showed particularly positive results with Syrah,
which yielded rounder, softer textured and more
elegant wines. The result is this collection of small-
production California Rhne wines raised exclusively in
French oak Hogsheads.

R eynaldo Robledos journeyfrom Michoacan,
Mexico in 1968 to the Napa Valley, to eventually
opening the Robledo Family Winery in 2003 in
Sonomais a testament to the dream that through
passion, hard work and dedication, good things will
come. The first winery established by a former
Mexican migrant worker, the Robledo Family Winery
sells most of their fruit to other wineries, but
produces an impressive portfolio of premium wines
under their own label along with a limited-
production extra virgin olive oil made from local
Tuscan olive varieties.
During the early years, the family purchased
fourteen vineyards, totaling approximately 350 acres,
in Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties. The family feels
their years of careful attention to soil conditions,

W ho said you cant serve dessert first? Certainly not Caryn and
Bill Reading, proprietors of Sonoma Portworks in Petaluma.
Creating single-vineyard, single-vintage, small-lot port wine,
Sonoma Portworks is tapping into a growing niche that agrees
with the Readings.
Sonoma Portworks, in operation for more than 20 years, is
the only port specialist in Sonoma County. Bill Readings
approach to winemaking is creative and experimental. He takes
this challenge seriously, cultivating fine ports from a single,
sustainable vineyard. Their ARIS ports are made from Petit
Verdot and Petite Sirah grapes. Deco Port is made from
Zinfandel with a hint of dark chocolate.
Tucked away on Second Street south of downtown Petaluma,
Sonoma Portworks is a quick jaunt off Highway 101. Many
visitors wander in from that road. Others are pulled in by signs
and curiosity. All are anxious to try this winerys offerings.
The tasting room is open from 12 to 5 p.m. Thursday through
Monday and is a small but welcoming space for both first-time
port tasters and port aficionados to take a spin through the
winerys portfolio. Beyond the several ports available to taste,
Sonoma Portworks also makes grappa, a spirit distilled from
port-laden pomace left over from the port-making process.
Visitors can also try Portworks Sonomic Almost Vinegar, which
is like a balsamic, but more versatile.
The Dyna Apertif is a delicious before-dinner offering, and
Duet Sherry offers a different take on dessert wine. All are worth

the creamery, sold his fresh, un-ripened Brie to saloons where it
was welcomed by the dockworkers as an alternate source of
protein and as a substitute for pickled eggs. The Petite Breakfast
(as its now called today) continues to be the creamerys most
popular cheese.
Visitors to the creamerys cheese shop will experience free
cheese tastings daily. Theres even a charming deli-caf on-site
with a large variety of cold and hot sandwiches, drinks, artisan
food products and a variety of picnic foods that can be enjoyed
with the entire family. Spread out a picnic blanket on the historic
property either overlooking the picturesque pond, or nestled in
the shaded redwood grove for a relaxing afternoon.
