Overview

Globally over 30 companies offer laser devices for soft tissue treatment in dental
applications. Nearly all of them offer similar diode laser technologies with wavelengths of 810
nm or 980 nm, exceptional 940 nm.

Some companies combines a power laser (810 or 980 nm, 2 30 W) with a red low level
power laser (635, 650, 660 or 670 nm, 20 400 mW) for LLLT, photodynamic therapy.

One company offer a combination of diode laser + radio frequency (Hager & Werken).

Diode laser:

Technologies of all offered devices are nearly identically. All diode lasers can be used in cw
(continuous wave) mode as well as in pulsed mode (p), the common technology to pulse the
laser radiation is by electronically switching (Shutter, Gate) with pulse durations from 10 s
50 ms. Newly technology will in future allow to create pulses in the range of ns, even ps.

The units vary in the power output from 2,5 to 50 W cw, and from 1,5 30 W peak power.

With regards to end user prices the devices with power of 1 5 W cost between 3.000
11.000 , units with power more than 7 W cost about 8.000 20.000 .

All devices have similar possibilities to store preferred data by the user, most of the units
have pre-selections for applications.

Hand pieces and delivery systems: All manufacturers offer glass fibres with core diameters of
200, 300, 400 and 600 m and with lengths of 2 3 m. Only a few manufacturers have
certificates for such fibers (NAMSA, CE etc). All manufacturers recommend the refurbish-
ment in the doctors environment, although it is a common knowledge, that this procedures
must be seen critically due to hygenic standards.

The use of singe-use, disposable fibre tips or reusable fibre tips which must be certified
according the norms are offered in the moment only by the companies ELEXXION,
BIOLASE, DENTEK, HAGER&WERKEN, ORALIA, SIRONA, ZAP but other companies are
well aware of this situation and are in development of such tips.

Hand pieces mostly are not in accordance with the real needs and demands of a dentist, only
KaVo, ELEXXION, BIOLASE, HAGER&WERKEN, ORALIA, SIRONA and DENTEK offer
attractive hand pieces, These hand pieces are autoclavable, however most of the companies
cannot give any proof.

Combination devices:

Some companies offer combination units of diode laser 810/980 nm plus diode laser 635/660
nm), some offer combination units of diode laser 810/980 nm plus Er:YAG (2,94 m). One
company offers diode laser 975 + 660 nm plus a radiofrequency device (Hager & Werken).

Education/ Training / Service:

Because of limited basic knowledge of customers dentists appropriate education and

training on laser technology and clinical usage is a central approach for all manufacturers, it
is thus an ideal platform for marketing activities.

Only a few companies offer an own ACADEMY, some use Internet fora for their customers.
Often training to dentists will be given under patronage of VIP clients, mostly with 2 5
participants only. Training on a regulary basis are offered by very few companies.

Education and training to sales persons is mostly underdeveloped or even not offered, this
fact limits marketing results extremely.

There is still a lot to be done in regards to service. Only a few companies have a
comprehensive service with well trained technicians.

CONCLUSION:

Apart from a few Global Players most of the companies are selling their devices only in their
home markets and sometimes also in their neighbour countries.

The great number of suppliers and the considerably comparable technologies induce a
difficult market environment.

Only a few companies are genuine related to dental business, the laser device are just an
extra item in their program: KaVo, HAGER & WERKEN, SIRONA their marketing can use
other dental devices to get customers attention. All other companies are laser manufacturers
without a long time developed close contact to dentists.

The power of a laser and the prices remain as the most used and sometimes only arguments
against other competitors.

Special USPs like very short pulses in diode lasers, very good working hand pieces
conforming to the hygiene standards, perfect and certified optics and fibre accessories, new
combinations units like laser plus radiofrequency together with a choice of excellent
education, training and service will finally achieve good market positions.
