EXPERIMENT # 04
OBJECTIVE:
To familiarize with refrigerator and study about working principle of simple
household refrigerator.

INTRODUCTION:
REFRIGERATOR: Cooling device comprising thermally insolated components to transfer heat
from it to external components, cooling the contents to temperature below than the ambient
temperature.

FREEZER: A device which maintain the temperature a few degree above the freezing point of
water is known as the freezer.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERANT:

The household refrigerator works on vapour compression refrigeration cycle. The Refrigerant vapour
is compressed by means of compressor to a pressure at which temperature obtained at the end of
compression will be more then atmosphere so that at this high temperature it will reject heat to
atmosphere and will get condensed. The condensate is then allowed to pass through a capillary so
that the pressure and temperatures and lowered. Capillary device acts as a throttling unit. At low
pressure and temperature refrigerant is supplied to the evaporator where load is kept, it absorbs the
heat and refrigerant get converted into gaseous phase and it is again supplied to compressor and
cycle is repeated.

PARTS OF HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERANT:

EVAPORATOR:
An evaporator is a device used to turn the
liquid form of a chemical into its gaseous
form. The liquid is evaporated, or vaporized,
into a gas.

Compressor:
The compressor is a vapour compression
Figure 2 evaporator
pump which uses pistons or some other
method to compress the refrigerant gas and
send it on its way to the condenser. The
condenser is a heat exchanger which removes
heat from the hot compressed gas and allows it
to condense into a liquid.

Condenser:
Figure 3 compressor
A condenser unit used in central air
conditioning systems typically has a heat
exchanger section to cool down and condense
incoming refrigerant vapor into liquid, a
compressor to raise the pressure of
the refrigerant and move it along, and a fan for
blowing outside air through the heat
exchanger section to cool the.

Expansion valve:
It is a component in refrigeration and air
conditioning systems that controls the amount
of refrigerant flow into the evaporator thereby
controlling the superheat at the outlet of the
evaporator.
