India is the 7th largest automobile producer in the world, with
an annual production of 23.36 million vehicles, including
two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger and commercial
vehicles. Common pollutants associated with motorized
vehicles are nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and carbon
monoxide. Air pollution in most Indian cities is at dangerous
levels and has affected the health of the Indian population.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) and
Hybrid-Electric Vehicles (HEVs)

n electric car is powered by an electric motor
instead of a gasoline engine and hybrids use a
combination of both. Energy is stored in rechargeable
batteries, which are recharged by common household
electricity or at EV charging stations.
Urban Mobility

onsists of bus, metro, monorail and light rail systems
used by general public. Public transport systems are an
essential part of safe, clean and affordable transport
for development. The bus market in India is expected to
be worth US$ 10.34 billion by 2020, while the monorail
market is expected to become $15-20 billon within the
next ten years.

IT infrastructure (traffic signals, CCTV camera, video
walls, applications, visualisation tools, etc.) that support
monitoring and management of traffic on the road network.

Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs)
l A
 fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical
energy from a fuel into electricity through a chemical
reaction with oxygen or another oxidizing agent. Fuel
cells are different from batteries as they require a
constant source of fuel and oxygen to run, whereas
they can produce continued electricity as long as the
inputs are supplied. Fuel cells are 2 to 3 times more
efficient than combustion engines.
Alternative Fuels / Vehicles

atural gas vehicles (NGVs) are bi-fuel vehicles with
multi-fuel engines capable of running on two fuels.
One fuel is gasoline or diesel, and the other is an
alternate fuel such as CNG/LPG or hydrogen
Storage / Batteries

sed in electric cars, trucks, vans, buses, electric
motorcycles, forklifts, electric golf carts, riding floor
scrubbers, etc. Rechargeable batteries are routinely
used all day, and fast-charged at night. The battery
storage market in India is over US$ 1.3 billion annually.

encourage reliable, affordable and efficient EVs, and
ensures 6-7 million units of EVs/Hybrids on roads.
