Record Modes:
Record Mode: Normal Normal recording from start point to stop or loop point
Record Mode: Time Selection Auto PunchRecords when entering and leaving time selection.
Items recorded via Loop Selection Auto Punch can be re-sized to reveal the entire source, as Reaper records
any input from the playback cursor start point through the point at which recording is stopped.
Record Mode: Auto-Punch Selected Items Records in the time frames of selected items

New Recording that overlaps existing media items

1. Split existing items and create new takes (default) Creates takes
2. Trims existing items behind new recording (tape mode) Hides the previous take where it is being overlapped and also creates more takes.
3. Create new media items in separate layers (lanes) Puts each recording on a new lane and all will play at once
Always Add Takes to New Recorded Items when Looping (is option for this mode (3) only)
This creates takes when in loop mode otherwise you get media items

Trim content behind media items when editing When an item is moved over another item (or recorded over) the first item will be trimmed
so it wont play during that time period.

Show all takes in lanes (when room) Unchecked: Stacks all takes on top of each other allowing you to cycle through one at a time.
Checked: Takes are shown in lanes if there is room.
Take Lane behavior
Display Empty Take Lanes
Keep checked to result in each take being on a separate lane.
Otherwise different takes can be on the same lane (confusing).
Allow Selecting Empty Take Lanes
Keep unchecked, By default, the empty take lanes cannot be selected, and cycling through takes will skip empty lanes.
Select takes for all selected items when clicking take lane
Synchronises the takes of selected items. You can Ctrl + click 2 or more items and as you click from take to take they will sync to the same take.

Show overlapping media items in lanes

Unchecked puts media items that overlap on the same lane. Checked puts media items that overlap on separate lanes.
When overlapping and crossfading splits, leave Unchecked or takes will not look right.

Monitor track media when recording (right click over arm button on track)
Lets a singer hear the previous vocal take while laying down a new one on the same track.
I like this mode because when Recording, it monitors the existing track and the live track outside punch, then only live in punch area
So for punching in guitars or vocals, its usually nice to hear the existing track and the live track up to the punch and then just live in the punch area.

Under Options, Preferences, Appearance is a setting: Maximum mumber of lanes, when showing overlapping items in lanes [16].
Automatic Coloring of Takes
Under Options, Preferences, Appearance, Peaks/Waveforms there is a setting to Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing items. When you are
recording multiple takes to two or more tracks at the same time, enabling this option can help you to visually identify which takes belong in the same set.
Make sure Prefs, Appearance, Peaks/Waveforms has Take Color checked for either peaks or background. The first image below is with Take Color checked for peaks, the second
is for backgrounds.
Features
Allow Selecting Empty Take
Lanes

When checked the Empty

Takes cycle with the other takes
when you go to the next take.
When unchecked, the take does
not move to the empty take.

Scenarios
Takes with lanes
Record Mode: Time Selection Normal

Split existing items and create new takes

Options Menu / Show all takes in lanes (when room) (checked)

Toggling this to unchecked will hide all takes except the active take.

This lets you do multiple takes looping over a time selection. Turn on looping and
hit record.

Takes without lanes After

Record Mode: Time Selection Normal

Punch In Takes no lanes
Record Mode: Time Selection Auto Punch

Split existing items and create new takes

Show all takes in lanes (when room) (unchecked)

This lets you punch in for fixes and loop over to get
multiple takes allowing you to pick the best.

Use Actions to navigate takes:

Take: Switch Items to Next Take
Take: Switch Items to Previous Take
Punch In Takes with lanes Before After
Record Mode: Time Selection Auto Punch

Show all takes in lanes (when room) (checked)

"Display Empty Take Lanes" checked

This mode is not recommended by me.

"Display Empty Take Lanes" unchecked (I think the

hiding the empty takes is confusing, recommend keep
checked)

Users often get this After result and it can be very

confusing. Thats why I recommend the method that
adds Empty Takes as above.
Punch In Takes on Empty Takes
Record Mode: Time Selection Auto Punch Selected
Items

Select the Empty Items with Ctrl clicking or by

dragging a marquee around them.

Then record and only the Empty Items will be punched

in.
Trim existing items like for Guitars
Trim existing items behind new recording (tape mode)".
This trims the previous take where it overlaps.

Show all takes in lanes (unchecked)

Show overlapping media items in lanes" Unchecked
puts them on the same lane.

If you recorded Verse1 and it overran into Verse2, this

mode will trim the excess off of Verse1. This is not
always desireable but you have the choice.

Overlaying Vocals
Set Options to "Create new media items in separate layers (layers)"

This lets the vocal on verse 1 tail off into verse two and lets verse 2 start
just before verse 1 without either interfering with one another.
Verse 2 gets a new lane on the same track.

Overlaying Vocals with looping

Set Options to "Create new media items in separate layers (layers)"

With "Always Add Takes to New Recorded Items when Looping"

Checked, you will get takes on looping.
Overlaying Vocals with looping

With "Always Add Takes to New Recorded Items when Looping"

UNchecked, you will get separate lanes on looping.

Where before they resulted in takes, this mode results in separate

media items.
Free Item Positioning
It allows you to drop in "items" anywhere in the
track you like. Overlapping, or actually even
drop an item on top of another one. Instead of
muting the item underneath, it mixes with the
other items. This will disable the takes system
per-track.

(checked)

Right click over track -> Enable track free item

positioning

Creates handles to drag tracks up and down,

even onto other tracks.

All items will play at the same time.

Preserve PDC delayed monitoring in recorded items

consider renaming to something like "record without delay compensation" - its not the monitoring which is being preserved exactly..
