Activity: Emotional Management

Grade(s): Fourth Grade

Learning Objective(s) (aligns with Competency)

Students will be able to:

1. Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior.


2. Understand the needs for self-control and how to practice it

Materials:

Book: The Day Jace Kelly Popped

A red balloon with bad feelings inside

Procedure:

1. Entrance and exit ticket- Students will complete the following Likert Scale
by circling the best answer:

i. I get frustrated when something goes wrong


ii. I have trouble staying calm
iii. sometimes I make bad choices because I am so angry
Iv. I dont know how to manage my anger

2. Discuss emotions and what they are


3. Discuss what types of emotions it is important to manage, such as anger
and frustration.

4. Read The Day Jace Kelly Popped

5. Discuss some of the reasons that Jace became so angry


6. Students will turn and talk to a partner about a time that they became
angry

7. Teacher will pop balloon and read all of the bad feelings inside.

8. Students will then discuss ways that they can stay calm whenever they
become frustrated or angry. For example, counting to 10, taking deep breaths,
talking to a friend, take a break, draw a picture, exercise, or play.

9.Close: Exit ticket

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?

Process Data: Attendance and entrance/exit tickets will be collected.

Perception Data: Perception data gathered, tallied and compared from

exit/entrance tickets of questions based on a Likert scale.

Outcome Data: Data pertaining to bad choices due to anger referrals will be

collected through the counselor and administration student information


system. Data will be compared from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nine weeks of

referrals due to bad choice to see if there was a reduction of behavior referrals

due to bad choice due to anger.

Follow Up: Counselors will follow up on all complaints and referrals regarding

bad choices. Counselors will follow up with all students involved in any bad

choices allegations and follow county procedures that include:

Peer mediation if appropriate


Individual counseling
Contacting parents and offering outside counseling resources
Attending group counseling
