HEAVY STRUCTURE LABORATORY FOR CES511

Three beams need to be cast in the heavy structural laboratory. The three beams consist of:

i) 2 normal RC beams (control specimen)

ii) 1 normal RC beam that has been composited and strengthened using steel fiber, polypropylene fiber
or other materials (with proper recommendation and design).

Also, the students are required to prepare cubes for:

i) Normal Concrete (3 cubes)

ii) Normal Concrete + Fibers (3 cubes)

Students are also advised to carry out workability test to identify the type of workability of each
specimen.

Analyze, justify, discuss, and conclude the outcome of the case study among the group member to
prepare the report.

fck = 25 N/mm2 at 28-day

Cover = 20mm
Maximum size of aggregate = 20mm
Dimension of specimen: 150x150x750mm
Tension reinforcement bar: 2T10
Compression reinforcement bar: 2R6
Link: R6-175

LAB LEVEL (2): COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST ON COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Objective: To compare the compression strength of the composite material with normal concrete at
28-day.

Way and mean: Using the design mix concrete, students are required to carry out the compressive
strength on composite material for:

1. Normal Concrete (3 cubes)

2. Normal Concrete + Fibers (3 cubes)

Suggest the design mix of concrete and procedure of the testing.

Size of mould: 150x150mmx150mm

LAB LEVEL (3): MONITORING THE CRACK PROPAGATION OF REINFORCED

CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To determine the crack behavior of the reinforced concrete beam experimentally.

Way and mean: The students are required to prepare the beam sample and carry out the flexural
testing under three-point bending test. During testing, students need to visually observe the crack
propagation of the specimen by taking videos and pictures. The testing is to be carried out until
failure. Stop the testing. Record the maximum load and deflection from the data logger.
LAB LEVEL (3): REPAIR AND RETROFITTING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To propose the techniques to repair and retrofitting damaged reinforced concrete beam.

Way and mean: There are several materials needed for patch repair such as CFRP, steel plate, epoxy,
reinforcement bar, bolts, and other methods. By using the second control specimen, students are
required to do flexural testing on the specimen until 75% of the ultimate load (from the data of the first
control specimen in the testing before). This is to ensure that the specimen is crack and students are
required to repair the specimen using suggested techniques and methods. Students must read any
related journal papers before carry out the repair work on the specimen.

LAB LEVEL (3): STRENGTHENING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

Objective: To propose the techniques to strengthen the beam using any composite material.

Way and mean: Strengthening of reinforced concrete beam is carried out using any composite
material to enhance the flexural performance of the beam. Students are required to propose the
techniques for strengthening one reinforced concrete beam by using any composite material (for
example the steel fiber) to enhance the flexural performance of the beam. Then, set up an experiment
to carry out the flexural testing on the specimens. From the experiment, students need to compare by
observing the performance between the control specimen and the strengthened specimen. Students
must read any related journal papers before carry out the repair work on the specimen.
