LESSON: ANIMALS IN BRITAIN
STRUCTURES: Present simple versus the present continuous
FUNCTIONS: talking about animals, pets
ASSUMPTIONS: SS may have difficulty in expressing questions in the present continuous, they may
make pronunciation mistakes
AIMS: The students will be provided with information and vocabulary about attitudes towards
animals in the UK
The students will learn:
How to skim and scan a text in English
To develop their vocabulary related to animals
to identify present forms in a text
to express what certain wild animals/pets are doing at a specific moment
to practice present continuous statements and questions
will interact in a meaningful context and develop their speaking skills
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
Talk about animals /pets
To get the gist of the essential information in a paragraph
Identify specific information in a text on animals
use the appropriate structures of the present simple and the present continuous
answer the questions using short answers
SUBSIDIARY AIMS: Encouraging students to use their English, teaching students
how to speak about present actions
AIDS : textbook, chalk, , blackboard.
EVALUATION: oral evaluation.
VOCABULARY: however, budgerigars, guinea pigs, birdwatching, wallabies, knock
down, hedgehogs, pigeons, in the countryside

Stages of the lesson:

WARMING UP :
Organising the class : - greeting the class
- introducing myself
- checking the homework
Aim - to make a pleasant atmosphere for the lesson.

T asks the S on duty to mention the students who are absent and writes this piece of
information down in the roll;
PRESENTATION
ACTIVITY 1 (PRE-READING) :
* T asks the Ss to open their books on page 28 and to open their notebooks, too. T writes
the title of the lesson on the blackboard and asks the Ss to do the same in their notebooks.
The title of the lesson is Animals in Britain.
* T asks the Ss to look at the pictures and tell what they see in the pictures. T asks some
questions related to those pictures and Ss answer. E.g. Are these animals wild ? How can
we classify them? What type of animals are they? (Mammals) The T reads the text out
loud (or uses a USB stick with the recording if the Language Lab is available).
Aim - to promote discussions and to practise listening

ACTIVITY 2 (READING):
* T asks two Ss to take turns reading the text on Animals in Britain helps them with the
pronunciation if necessary. Students are divided into groups, they have to solve exercises
1 on page 28.(match the topics to the right paragraph).
S tells Ss that 16 animals are mentioned in the text. SS are asked to find them and write
the names on a piece of paper as quickly as possible. The winner is the student who
finishes first, but the answers must be correct and there must be no spelling mistakes. The
winner gets a sticker that is instrumental in scoring high for the overall class performance
mark.
* T checks understanding of new vocabulary and whether the answers are correct.
Aim to develop reading skills, answer questions about the text .

ACTIVITY 3 (PRACTICE) : The Ss are asked to solve a quiz with animals in pairs.

ACTIVITY 4 (PRODUCTION):
* Teacher gives students cutouts which show certain animals performing certain actions.
T asks one student to come to the front of the class. The student tells the class which
animals are in the picture. The other Ss in the class ask questions about what the animals
are doing in the picture, for example, Is the dolphin swimming? Students try to draw the
picture. The T can display the original picture and the students drawings on the
classroom wall. The Students who ask questions correctly and get the right answer will be
rewarded with a sticker that counts for their semester overall class performance mark.
Aim to develop various types of interaction, to practise present continuous forms, to
develop speaking

ACTIVITY 5 (Assigning the homework) :

WRITING
* Write a short composition 12-18 lines about animals in our country (wild animals, pets,
pests).
