Purpose

The purpose of this research is to find that whether retention to an online program in a university

tends to pertain and correspond to a higher graduation rate. This purpose of the research program

is varied among the famous and top US Universities and it is observed whether the potential

direction of this trend is beneficial for both the student and the country or is it consuming more

than it can bestow. It is the obligation of the selected university to observe the trends and either

make the online program better or potentially reject this learning solution if this leads to a

negative trend in the endurance of knowledge.

Online Learning program can be a favor to students in remote areas or to foreign students who

cannot reach these lands, but it can tear off the bonding of student and teacher if they are only

virtually connected, or are a part of a program that enables them to learn, when they are only a

few steps away from the university. Another argument for this is that the university timings may

not suit the student and in online learning he may attend the classes at his ease. This is a very

strong argument and can certainly provide basis for online teaching. The point here is that the

correspondence online can be slow and time taking, also it lacks the body language that both the

teacher and the student use to make others understand what they desire. So the issue in this

procedure of learning is that neither the teacher nor the student can comprehend the complete

meaning even if they are both live and conversing quite fluently.

Background

The purpose of this research is to find out whether the growth in terms of online universities is

contributing to the factor embedded within the knowledge seeking ability of the students. It has

been considered an essential part of the organization to seek answers within this domain and thus

provide the best possible results. Graduation is the aim of every student when he enrolls and

every university when it enlists the student. Failure to attain so, leads to both degradation of the

student and defaming of the university.

Recently a lot of universities have started their online programs and as a result it has been seen

that the graduation rate, not only in this country, but across the globe, has increased. The

question that arises here is that do the university produce as much graduates that it enrolls or

retains. It is normally seen that both the teachers and the students favor physical presence, as to

them it means better deliverance and excellent understanding. But to the university it is an

indicator of additional costs that it has to bear. So keeping in mind this background it is essential

that an study is devised in order to overcome the hurdle and deliver the promised results with

lowering the cost.

Method

The measures of retention and enrollment have been shortlisted for being the candidate for

independent variable, these measures are astounding, but it was configured that the enrolment

and dropping out is the fault of the student most of the time. Therefore, it was decided that the

variable appropriate for this study was not enrollment, it was retention.

There are a lot of universities both across the globe and across this nation but the top universities

are selected for this study. All of these universities favor online learning and the statistics that

have been included for online learning. Then a simple descriptive test and a test of regression has

been applied to it. In order to truly comprehend the meaning of this research.

Results

There are two phases of research that is to be discussed in this part of the report, the first one

comprises of descriptive statistics and the second one falls beyond that horizon and discusses the

inferential derived from the observed data.

The descriptive part is quite short here and is summarized in the following table.

Retention Graduatio
% n%
Mean 57.4137931 41.75862069
Standard 4.315602704 1.832018976

Median 60 39

Sample 540.1083744 97.33251232

Skewness -0.309920645 0.176364432
Range 96 36
Minimum 4 25
Maximum 100 61
Sum 1665 1211
Count 29 29

From this data it can be seen that the retention rate has a mean of 57%, a mode of 51% and a

median of 60%, on the other hand Graduation has a Mean of 42%, a mode of 36% and a median

of 39%. This depicts that the graduation rate is a little lesser than the retention rate. Graduation

rate has a lesser standard deviation, a higher minimum and a lower maximum, indicating it to be

more stable than retention.

The inferential statistics has great depth in this report.

Retention Rate

This is a scatterplot with retention rate on x axis and graduation rate on y axis it can be seen by

the trend line that as the rate of retention increases the rate of graduation increases. Therefore, it

is observed that these two have a positive relationship and tends to generate more graduation

with increase in retention.

The Regression Results show that the following equation.

Graduation Rate=25.42 +0.28 ( Retention Rate )

This implies that the overall graduation rate is 25.42% without any retention rate, it is known that

this statement cannot be true. Therefore, an increase in one percent of retention rate increases

0.28% of graduation rate. This is specifically true in form of this equation. It is also seen that all

the values in this model are significant. If the whole model is discussed. It is a highly significant

but it is not a good fit. This is due to a high F value and a low value for R-square.

Discussion

The model can be said to be highly significant but the justification given in this case is highly

volatile. So in other words this independent variable depicts about 43% of the dependent

variable. There might be other variables worth looking for.

The green plot is of University of South here and it can be seen that despite of having a high

retention rate this university has an extremely low graduation rate.

And as a Principal for University of Phoenix it can clearly be seen that

Retention Rate

This university has a low retention rate, that is alarming but despite of having a low retention rate

the university has a high graduation rate.

Recommendation

It is therefore recommended that the increase in retention rate can lead to increase in graduation

rate so the key here is that to increase retention in order to increase the rate of graduation. The

potential does explain only 43% so explore other related variables in order to secure a higher
