Global Citizen Essay: Albert Min

Its been said that arguing against globalization is like arguing against law of gravity.
Kofi Annan, the United Nations 7th secretary general, has shown us that globalization is real and
we must not ignore it. Globalization, as Mr.Annan has mentioned, is an inevitable change that
the world is facing. The ideas and goods spreading throughout the world; spurring more
integration and interaction between the governments, economies, and various cultures. Being a
global learner is to recognize the perspective of other cultures, take action whenever the world is
facing injustice, communicate ideas with an open mind, and to investigate the world to make it a
better place. Ambassador School of Global Leadership strives to raise awareness of global issues
through exposure and discourse. As a global citizen learning under the ASGLs guiding principle,
I must follow the vision and guiding principles of a global learner.

One must recognize and take action to the worlds broken system in order to become a
true global citizen. With all these broken system, I believe I am the global citizen who recognizes
broken system and are trying to fix it. First, in order to influence the world, one must influence
the nation first; in order to influence the nation, one must influence the states; in order to
influence the states, one must influence the city; in order to influence the city, one must influence
the community; and in order to influence the community, one must influence and have strong
bond within ones family. Right now, Im at the stage of trying to influence the community.
Recently, I investigated my community and realized that the problem in LA was increasing
number of homeless people. Then I had this vision of creating something that helps the homeless
people in a long term. I started to work on my nonprofit organization that helps homeless obtain
Identification and social security numbers so that they can obtain government grants.

Nonprofit organization isnt the only way I approached to become a global citizen. I am
an effective leader who demonstrates whats possible; I set high goals and strive to create
optimum results. I motivate my peers to implement innovative solutions to complex problems.
Through my service club Hwarang Leo, I orchestrated the efforts of over 50 volunteers at three
booths at Koreatowns largest night market to raise over $1,000 for the Guatemala Mission
Project over one weekend in October. Our success did not come without challenges. On the
second day, my volunteers grew exhausted and lethargic from sitting under the blazing sun. I,
too, was affected by the heat, but I motivated them by challenging them to raise more money
than the day before. My volunteers were reinvigorated; I had successfully tapped into their inner
competitiveness. Together, we renewed our efforts and made twice the profit we made the day
before. Our third day was even more profitable, and we exceeded our fundraising goal. Im
proud to have played an instrumental role in raising money to help shelter, nourish and educate
underprivileged children and adults in Guatemala City. As an effective leader, I will continue to
make an impact. When I have an innovative vision, I share this ambition with my peers and
inspire them to persevere until we realize success. My positive attitude and driven nature will
allow me opportunities to influence and give back to not only my community but my city and
country.

My journey to become who I am now took 4 astonishing years. Becoming a global

learner and citizen took a time to move a mountain. I believe individual success is more effective
in a sense to strive for my true ambition and my vision in this world. My journey helped me find
the choices; through that journey, I embraced the diversity, took advantage, and became a leader.
I was no longer a goldfish in a small pond; I am now a Great White Shark roaming to dominate
the vast sea. I was just an ordinary child from a small town. When I moved to Los Angeles, I
stepped out of my comfort zone and achieved more than I could imagine as the Student Body
President, Varsity golf Captain, business club chair of Leo Club, and now working to establish a
non-profit organization and a fashion line. Miracle might be a word that can be described to this
circumstance but I want to say this has mold me to a start to my success as a global leader.

Changes happen from the very small things and I learned to appreciate all the given
situation, good and bad, since it worked out as a valuable asset towards my journey in life. I have
achieved to go through the hard in a unique aspect of hardships. I gave up, blamed myself and
my mother for living in such condition. Then the times I gave up, I realized I had to accept the
fact and get back up; I was able to plant a different mindset into my head. With that new mindset,
I learned how to accept the hardship. This is my weapon; the weapon of knowledge through a
significant challenge in life that shaped who I am now. This is why I am pursuing education to
excel my skill since I have confidence that I can make a difference to myself and my community.
