Context

Water availability in Tunisia stands at a third of the international

level according to the theoretical needs per capita (350m3/ inhabitant/
per year). Since the beginning of the 1970s, the use of treated
wastewater to complement irrigation has helped to sustain
agricultural activity.

However, the government’s severe restrictions on wastewater use

have significantly constrained agricultural diversification, leading
small farmers to abandon what is now a barely profitable sector.

To ensure the project’s feasibility, a study of social habits of the

beneficiaries was documented and spatial analysis of land occupation
using GIS was realized. At the same time, a pilot project was conducted
during 2007-2008. This pilot project will serve as a practical
demonstration and reference site for local authorities and small farmers
facilitating the transfer of the model to the community.
