5
INDUSTRY PROFILE:
Architecture, without a philosophical base, is a rudderless ship. A credible philosophical base
can only emerge through a dispassionate and objective study of history; historiography thus
becomes the key to any meaningful discussion on trends of architecture in Pakistan, a country
that emerged out of the partition of the British Colonial subcontinent, laden with the biases,
prejudices, divisions, confusions and the smothering effect of an autocratic system. The
colonial rule did bring some fruits of technology to the subcontinent such as the railways,
codified law, a west-based watered down education system, English as the official, hence
dominant, language, a culture of the elite that looked to the west and understood progress
only in terms of industrialization and therefore westernization, fitting perfectly with the post-
colonial road map laid out by the ex-rulers and the developed countries. Local culture,
customs, habits, social organizations, crafts, building standards and measures of energy
saving etc. were ignored in the drive to modernization by the newly powerful inheritors of the
colonial government. Standards of governance, as manifested by the new 'sahibs', on the one
had provided a continuity, yet on the other, failed to meet the needs and demands of a self-
governing society leading to a rapid decay of the inherited standards of government, law,
justice, culture and architecture.

In the larger cities of Pakistan - Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar and
Islamabad - structures have been built since the partition, which seem more suited for the
colder climates of the higher latitudes rather than the hot climate of the country. For centuries
people of the region have built in response to the prevalent conditions of climate and culture,
yet for the last sixty years all the previous wisdom was set aside to produce climatically ill-
suited and culturally inappropriate structures. Understanding of history and the experiences
embedded in it have been ignored. Cultural maturity, high esthetical considerations so evident
in contemporary architecture of Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Sri Lanka, is, with very few exceptions,
missing in Pakistan. Here we are still trying to discover our identity in the maelstrom of
racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, which, rather than resolving, are becoming sharper with
every passing decade. Historiography, the science of reading, writing and understanding
history has

never been seriously addressed, and without that understanding and the development of a
resilient philosophy, our architecture is indeed a rudderless ship. In this background Thaap
decided to organize the Thaap-Conference 2010, the results of which are in your hands.

6
Since time immemorial, people of the subcontinent have lived life based on precepts evolved
over centuries of thought and strife, with long timespans of peace followed by periods of
upheaval and chaos to again settle down with a more sophisticated basis of social
organization. This evolution, progressing like an ever-expanding spiral in time, has given the
huge population, spread over a vast area, a life with sets of commonalities and diversities,
which make a bouquet of multitude of colors and fragrances. India, a place of many beliefs,
old and those newly proclaimed, over time, by a string of seers, has always addressed the
issues of life, death, purpose and meaning of life and developed a common philosophical
bond, despite the numerous political and economic subdivisions. Since the development of
human settlements along the rivers of the Punjab and Sindh, from as early as ca5000 BCE
through the Vedic Period ca1500 BCE, the region, comprising the present day Kashmir, and
North Western India, was the acknowledged center of world learning with outposts as far as
Egypt and the Greek islands and on the shores of present day Turkey. Although somewhat
ignored today, that long tradition of profound thinking and analysis continues to the present
day.

Architecture in Pakistan has evolved from the grandeur of the Mughal, British colonial to the
modern; the latter often being a fusion of all these traditions.

The historical city of Lahore, the second-largest in Pakistan after Karachi, has over the past
many centuries been the heart of many empires which have left their marks on the flavor of
the city. While Lahore itself may have grown in proportions beyond any limits imagined, it
has managed to maintain that elusive element that makes it stand out among other cities, the
intangible quality that marks its streets as they weave a labyrinthine web around its historic
roots. Juxtaposed against this inorganic, informal pattern is the seemingly more ordered,
controlled logic of new developments. So Lahore is a city of anachronisms but still echoes
down the length of its eight-lane boulevards, declaring its presence to all those who are drawn
to its many wonders, and those who have claimed it as their identity.

Karachi tried asserting its cosmopolitan and international identity over Lahore, but it is a
scuffle of just contrasts. Karachi, a metropolitan city with a population of over 18 million,
stands out for its amalgamation of influences, that come together to constitute deeper, more
nuanced meanings. Lahore, in contrast, causes the visitor to stop in his tracks, and behold
what lies around him, each constituent of its existence ringing true to the quintessential flavor

7
that emanates from its bold identity. Islamabad, with its relatively recent beginnings, lacks
what can be thought of as a distinct flavor. Attempts at instilling that mystical element into
the veins of the city have taken many forms, among them an attempt at importing it from the
city of Lahore. However, the rigid, orderly, grid-iron plan of Islamabad with axial roads and
strictly controlled development sets it apart from Lahore. It is the city that projects the
modern face of Pakistan.

Pakistans new capital city of Islamabad was called the City of the Future by Doxiadis, His
idea of dynapolis a city expanding in a linear fanshape from an initial point was meant
to cope with the explosive urbanization and growth of the 60s in a developing country like
Pakistan.

A blend of loosely-knit ethnic groups, Pakistan was held together by religion; the Capital
project was an attempt to modernize the country by weaving a diverse population into a
unified entity and to lay the foundation for a modern and progressive Pakistan. The aim was
to transform a rural agrarian society into an urban and cosmopolitan culture. Conceived in
1959 by the military ruler General Ayub Khan, the project was intended to be a modern,
planned city that would be an ideal seat of government tucked away in the foothills of the
Margallah range. Doxiadis Associates prepared the master plan and it was approved in 1960.
It was a planned city with wide tree-lined roads, green belts, planned residential sectors,
earmarked commercial areas, proper zoning and large-scale structures to be designed by
foreign architects.

The Government of Pakistan commissioned American architect Edward Durrell Stone to

design the three most important buildings of the city: the president house, the parliament
building and the cabinet block, because of, in the words of a government official, his love
for Mughal buildings and the spirit of grandeur the Mughal buildings emanate. However, he
produced designs which were, ironically, in a Wright-inspired, straight horizontal line
language, devoid of any Mughal or traditional vocabulary. He also designed the Quaid-i-
Azam University in Islamabad. The Supreme Court was designed by Japanese architect
Kenzo Tange in the 1980s as an imposing formalist building derived out of triangular forms,
with an unsuccessful attempt to Islamize it with stick-on symbols.

TAMEER ART SMC:

Creative

Administration Department

Marketing
Talent
and Project
Management
Management

18
All these departments are of strategic importance and work cross functionally, the working of
one department affect the working of the other department and in this way the whole
company works. TAMEER ART SMC, has been divided on two grounds i.e. services
departments and product department. In services department, there are four further
departments that are,

1. Creative Studio Department

2. Talent Management
3. Accounts Department
4. Marketing and Project Management Department

While in product department, there is further only one department which is usually there to
support the service department of the company,

19
1. Merchandising and Administration Department

All these departments are for different purpose but, they have to work in a synchronized
manner at one point or another to provide the best quality service to the client. In my further
discussion I will briefly explain all of these departments.

Creative Studio Department:

The creative studio is basically is a high-technology room that can be configured for a wide
variety of teaching, learning and collaborative activities in many disciplines.

It can consists of;

1. High-Definition Projectors,
2. Move-able Walls,
3. Dry-Erase White Board

TAMEER ART SMC, uses 3-D modeling technique to get an actual and reality based
structure, it can also portray sustainability of one building/structure against different against
different situation and/or environment.

It also helps to have a clear understanding and minor detailing of the building/structure.

The creative studio basically consist of, architecture design and interior design. This
department focuses on the design work of the building, they design the initial draft of any
architectural design and they rule out any kind of flaw that can occur due to the initial
demand of the client. If there is any design flaw in the clients requirement of the project, the
design team points it out and provides with multiple options that what can be done to
eliminate the flaw and in its replacement.

Accounts Department:
The accounts department of TAMEER ART SMC has the responsibility of managing the
financial inflow and outflow of the company, maintaining record of each and every
transaction made. Make the financial statement and produce quarterly reports to the superiors,
so they can evaluate the companys standings and progress in the mean of making revenue.

Once the deal has been finalized, it is informed to the project head in the, marketing and
project management department and then they coordinate with the accounts department and
starts the transaction process according to the companys policy and keeps on informing the
company about the payment progress of the client.

20
Talent Management Department:
Talent management is the new modern companys HR department. Talent management is best
understood as a thinking shift around the hiring, training and retention of great employees.
Whereas, HR thinks and focuses on the hiring and what benefits the person can provide in the
specific role, talent management does not only fit for the specific role but also be an asset to
the company as a whole and for future reference they can be utilized in other departments in
the time of need.

Talent management is strategic, often manifesting as a company-wide long-term plan closely

associated with overall business goals.

The talent management team at TAMEER ART SMC, makes sure that the people they recruit
for the company are not for one certain job but are not only experts in their job, they can
perform good in other departments and sustain some transferable skills, which can benefit the
company as a whole.

21
Marketing and Project Management Department:

Director
Marketing and
Project
Management

Manager
Manager Projects
Marketing

Asst. Marketing Asst. Manager

Manager Projects

Marketing departments primary duty is to spread the word about the company into the
market and to the target market and potential market. So, everyone knows what the company
is doing and how a person can contact the company.

There are two types of marketing techniques.

1. Direct Marketing
2. Indirect Marketing

In direct marketing people directly contact the potential clients by telephone, face to face
meeting, and direct contact through E-mails etc.

In indirect marketing you dont cover your specific target market, you vastly advertises
through different mediums like, social media, T.V. News Letter, News Paper etc.

22
TAMEER ART SMC does not restrict any of its marketing departments employee for the
marketing, or which technique to use. The employee who is doing marketing, if he/she
attracts any client from his/her marketing technique and if the deal is finalized, the same
employee is appointed the project head of that particular clients project from that day till the
project is completed and handed over to the client.

Merchandising and Administration:

TAMEER ART SMC does not primarily deal with providing the product to the client, but if
the client gets interior designing and asks TAMEER ARTS SMC and put a special request
that we should provide the hardware related to the interior design than, TAMEER ARTS
merchandising and administration department is put into motion to complete the clients
order/requirements.

The basic duties of this department is to collect samples from the vendors according clients
requirement and once the samples are collected they are shown to the client to select and
finalize the exact thing they want, once it is finalized by the client the order is placed by the
department.

The 2nd duty or responsibility of this department is to collect or keep and keep a record of
catalogues from different vendors associated with the TAMEER ART SMC, as well as update
those catalogues time to time.

They are supposed to update market information,

Available or New vendors in the market

Rate list of the vendors
Available products in the market
Replacement of a product if the product is discontinued

They are supposed to make competitive statements of the product from different vendors and
make a single statement for the heads, so they can evaluate what product to purchase or
whom to give the order for that specific product.

Once the product is finalized, that what do purchase and from who, the information is then
transferred to merchandising and administration department. Then the merchandising and
administration department places the order, and coordinates everything with accounts
department and creative studio department from the order placement until the payments have
been made to the vendors and the product is delivered to the client.

23
They have the responsibility of administration of office and the project site, this department is
type of a bridge between all the departments. The labor, how the labor should be dispatched?
How much labor is required and where? The administration department is responsible to
administration and manage the labor effectively and efficiently.

The merchandising and administration department is also to make external payments to the
vendors by getting approval from the accounts, once the accounts department clears the
cheque/payments of vendors or the labor, its merchandising and administration departments
job and responsibility to deliver and clear out the cheques and payments.

SWOT Analysis:
A study undertaken by anyone of any organization to identify its internal strengths and
weaknesses, as well as its external opportunities and threats.

24
STRENGTHS:
The internal Strength of the company which its own in the form of human resource,
technology, brand name can be a major reason for its success in this highly competitive
environment.

1) Strong International Image:

TAMEER ARTS SMC is a London based organization, and in London TAMEER ART SMC
worked with multiple clients like,

The London Furnishing Company

MONO London
LINLEY London
Rachel Winham
Andrew Martin
C.P. HART
CINDY FULLER Interiors
Paul Davis + Partners Architects Urban Partners
Blonstein Creative Productions
PAJAMA

2) Personalized Client Service:

25
TAMEER ARTS SMC provide excellent personalized client service, because of which the
client feels comfortable and easy that they can be catered for any request, they make with
TAMEER ART SMC. We do not say that it cannot be done, instead we give better options
that what should be done and what is for the betterment of the client.

3) Relationship with Suppliers

Strong relationship with suppliers that offer us flexibility and respond to special product
requirements. Which is very beneficial to us that we can give this luxury to our client of
making a unique request of any interior product and we can make it available for them.

4) Facilities

The biggest strength of TAMEER ART SMC is that they do not push their clients around for
one thing or another. Once they are at TAMEER ART SMC they dont have to go here and
there for documentation of any type. The company processes everything for them and let
them know. They dont have to hire different interior/construction crew. TAMEER ART SMC
provides all the facilities under one roof, which is really beneficial for client, financially and
physically.

5) Experience Workforce and Technology:

Very skilled and experienced workforce, which saves clients the headache of deciding and
finalizing, what should be done, and how the interior should be utilized through the 3D
modeling technique/software. Which is very helpful because it is kind of a reality and you
know what will look and how.

6) Locally Working

TAMEER ART SMC usses all the local labor and local suppliers which help increase the
companys image locally and trust is built between the suppliers and us which helps us in
delivering the product/project on time, and we are able to meet our commitment with the
client.

WEAKNESSES:
1) New Market:

In Pakistan there are many architecture firms and interior designers, as for construction
management companies they have already built trust amongst the market and local client, so

26
it will be hard and it will be time taking for TAMEER ARTS SMC to make their place and
trust in market and clients.

2) Seasonal Effect:

Construction business is affected by the weather, in monsoon weather it becomes very

difficult for the company as the weather affects its working. Rain is discouraging for
construction and delays the construction process, due to which the project is delayed and
company cannot honor its commitment with the client which is not good for business.

OPPORTUNITIES:
1) Ease of Access:

Our target market wants that they dont have to meet/move from one place to another, and we
at TAMEER ART SMC are providing the same ease of access to our clients. They do not
have to roam anywhere once they are at our company everything and supplier will be
provided to them according to their requirements.

2) Alliances with Other Company:

TAMEER ART SMC can collaborate with other construction companies to complete a big
project or increase its reach out of Lahore. So They can be able to capture the market which
are out of Lahore.

3) Technology

New design updates of the house accomodations and new technology/software updates to
help the new and young designers in their work or training process which will eventually help
TAMEER ART SMC to get the latest trends and designs for the client which will increase the
clients interest and company will be able to capture more clients.

4) Increasing demand:

In Pakistan, the construction business is increasing day by day and right now the demand of
construction, architecture and interior designers is very high. TAMEER ART SMC is trying
to capture the market and fulfill the clients demand.

THREATS:
1) Competition:

27
There is high competition in the market where TAMEER ART SMC is working, high
competition compels everyone to lower the prices to eliminate the competition, which is not
good for the business and can affect the business in a bad way.

2) New trends:

Dramatic and frequent changes in design and new trends, if the company is unable to identify
them in time it can lose its client to someone else who has done its homework on the new
designs and trends.

3) Increased Cost:

Increase in labor costs is a very serious issue for the company, if the labor/contractor decides
to increase the labor or due to any other reason, Govt. policy, Labor unions than it is very
harmful for business because, the cost increases but the company cannot ask the client to
increase the budget and thats when the company has to bear loss or decrease the profit.

4) Government Policies:

Government policies regarding taxed being imposed on land or sale and purchase of land also
affect us, indirectly, any kind of delay in the sale and purchase of land or any kind of increase
in cost of this process compels the client of invest less on architecture/interior or construction
of the house.

5) Economic Instability:

Economic instability in country affects the rates/costs of raw materials, which eventually
increases the overall cost of the project, which is not good for the company because client
does not want to pay more even if the rates has been increased.

IDENTIFICATION OF PLAUSIBLE PROBLEMS:

1 The catalogues from different vendors were not properly arranged/catalogued in
order, which was a problem and time taking to locate a particular catalogue from a
particular vendor. It was also utilizing a lot of space in the office.
2 The computer systems in the office were not upgraded due to which the work was
slow and I had to bring my own laptop for work. Still I was not given a proper system
to work on, but the creative studio was given the latest computers.

28
3 Accounting department is weak and has a poor record maintaining process and the
records are not being maintained digitally. They are maintaining it manually which is
time taking when want to find an old record.
4 The Managing Director is an expert in design & creative field because of which the
business/marketing department of the company are neglected.
5 The company does not have any official written SOPs, constitution or business
guidelines.
6 Combined hall for the working of all internees even if they are from different
departments. Which makes it difficult for one to concentrate on work with all the
conversations and noise.

RECOMMENDATION:
1 The catalogues should be arranged properly with a particular method, it can be
arranged in an alphabetical order according to the product or the vendors so it is easy
for the new person to locate/find a particular catalogue.
2 The computer systems should be upgraded, for everyone so everyone can work
effectively and efficiently and complete the task on time.
3 The data should be recorded digitally so the record that is needed can be found easy
and immediately which will increase work time and productivity. The accounting
practices need to be improved, for a better corporate financial performances.
4 The Managing Director should also concentrate on the business related department or
other departments because if he neglects other departments than the working of other
departments might affect the performance of the company. MD should have a regular
meeting sessions with the other departments and ask for departmental progress.
5 There should be written SOPs/constitution of the company so everyone would know
what the SOPs of the companies are and everyone knows what are their duties and
what are they supposed to do and what is the proper procedure for everything.\
6 There should be different offices for internees or working place with partitions so
everyone can concentrate on their work and can work without any interruptions and
disturbance.

29
