A Week in Barcelona

March 8, 2017
Cedar City, Utah

A group of nine of Southern Utah Universitys students spent one week of their Christmas
break, December 26 to January 2nd, in Barcelona, Spain. One of those students was Leesha Orison, a
student who wants to minor in Spanish. Leesha went on this short study abroad trip to gain a better
insight of Spains culture as well as to improve her Spanish speaking skills. She hopes to one day
become a bilingual medical practitioner, and she saw this trip as an opportunity to help her reach
that goal.
During this trip the students visited many different historical sites and museums of Barcelona
such as: La sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, The museum of Picasso, and many more. It is a once in a life
time opportunity to be able to see those monuments and visit the many museums of Barcelona. While
visiting these sites, the students were able to deepen their understanding of Barcelonas history,
religions, culture and architecture.
By immersing oneself into another culture and learning its history, one may become a better
global citizen. By observing other cultures and countries, one is able to learn how different societies and
governments are conducted. By studying abroad, a person may gain new ideas on how to better their
own community.
Through this trip, Leesha not only improved her Spanish skills, but also deepened her
understanding of another culture and she has become a better global citizen. Through Southern Utah
Universitys global engagement center, Leesha was able to develop her EDGE project from this trip. As
part of her EDGE project, she will be making a video about her perspective of her trip to Spain and how
she has grown culturally from her trip.
