Product Progress Assessment

Introduction and Statement of Purpose

My goal for this final project is to showcase the knowledge I have absorbed and the
abilities I have gained through my time in the music classroom at Smith Elementary.
I also wish to gain more insight into the field by taking on this task in my original
work. My original work is the planning and teaching of a lesson to the Kindergarten,
First, and Second Grade classes during their Music class. This will allow me to apply
what Ive learned to a real situation in which I must successfully come up with and
teach a different music lesson for each of these grades. I wish to share my love of
music with these young students as well as with those who will see the product of
this work in my Final Presentation.
Creating the Lesson Plans
Objective
I will create three different lesson plans, one for each of the three grades above.
The plans will consist of review of topics these grade levels have already discussed
as well as implementation of these topics in games and activities. Through this, I
hope to gain insight into what planning is like for a music teacher and how it differs
between grade levels.

Meetings/Dates

Monday, March 27, 2017 7:45AM Mrs. Janis Dahl

Description of Process
I first gathered a few different books and resources from Mrs. Dahls shelves to
begin looking at ideas. Using those books as well as Pinterest, I was able to find
different activities, games, and lessons to pull together for planning. Slowly I put a
lesson together for each grade, starting with Kindergarten, then First Grade, then
Second Grade. There were multiple elements pulled from multiple places pulled
together into each lesson. Once I had it all pulled together, I met with Mrs. Dahl to
go over the plans and ensure they were solid. We went over them and tweaked a
few things and now they are ready to be put to use.
Results/Conclusions
From this planning, I realized how much actually goes into this part of teaching
music. I had to make sure all the elements I pulled together fit for that specific
grade level and fit into the lesson all together. Now I just have to practice the music
and ensure I am ready to teach. I also learned about the fact that a music teacher
must try to include singing in every lesson in some way. While planning with Mrs.
Dahl, she helped me add some singing in areas where there wasnt any and told me
that if there isnt a lot of singing, the students wont think its important. A lot of
elements have to come together to create a perfect lesson plan that fits with the
students you are teaching.
Teaching the Lessons
Objective
Once lesson plans are made and the days come, I will teach these lessons to the
three youngest grades at Smith Elementary. This will help me to gain physical
experience in teaching music and what it is like. I will be able to see how it really
looks, feels, and works to teach a music lesson to young students. This is going to
be the culmination of all that I have learned so far studying under Mrs. Dahl and will
truly showcase what I now know.

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 12:30PM- 3:00PM Smith Elementary

Description of Process
Monday, I will teach each of the three lessons I have planned and prepared for
without video. This will allow me to get it down completely and adjust accordingly
before the next day. Wednesday I will teach the same lessons again to different
classes, this time filming. I will film a different part of each lesson to put together
into a video and showcase the work I have done. Once I have taught both days and
filmed the one day, I can quickly edit the film together and place it into my Final
Presentation.
Results/Conclusions
This part of the process has not happened yet, but so far it seems it will yield
pleasing results. I will gain experience in what it is like to teach these young
students the value of music and how fun it can be. I will see how students react to
certain actives, see what knowledge they will gain or already have gained. I will, in
the end, see what it was like from beginning to end, planning a lesson and
executing it. Overall, this will bring me more experience and more satisfaction with
its execution.
