Explanation: The following paper will be an analysis of College Football Ticket Sales were
Contingency Analysis and with a Chi-Square Test Statistic. We will then use our
information to answer the following four questions. 1.) Does gender affect ticket sales for
College Football Games? 2.) Based on the data, what should colleges do regarding their
advertising budget? 3.) What other conclusions could people draw from the following graph? 4.)
Does Gender Affect Ticket Sales? We first started by gathering information from different
sources this included websites of Sports Reference and university websites that included the
demographic breakdown. We then looked further into each of the athletic websites to find how
many seats were sold for each football stadium. After that we calculated what percentage of men
and women who attended the university, and multiplied that by the amount of seats sold during
football games. We then then put the values into the Chi-Square Analysis Formula once we
did that we received the critical value of 15,237 and the test statistic of 42,557. We concluded
that we would not reject the null and find that the ticket sales were independent of gender. We
also conducted the test using the Contingency Analysis where we had our expected and
observed variables. We divided the two tables by putting name of the university at the top, and
the gender of both male and female to the side. We then compared both of the variables and
concluded that we would Not Reject our Null and that the values are not dependent on each
other. Meaning that they are two independent variables that do not affect the sale of tickets for
football games.
What should colleges do with their advertising budget as a result? They should not worry
about a certain gender to attract, because if gender is not a factor than the advertising should be
open to everyone. As indicated by the yearly budget for the athletic department at the University
of Utah, we spend on average of $4,184,379, which accounts to 6% of their total expenses. With
the information we found, we conclude that in their efforts to attract more customers they
shouldnt focus on a specific gender, and instead expand to all. They have an opportunity of
What Other Conclusions Could People Draw from the Graph? I feel that different
conclusions people could draw from the information is the demographic breakdown of different
colleges. They do not just need to look at the advertising budget, instead they could focus on
how they could allocate their budget to other things that could help students, like investing more
time in the school. If business investors notice this then they would want to put their money into
the school, and that would bring us how many students area accepted into the universities. I feel
that this information could be also used for colleges to determine how gender affects other
activities within their university. Maybe to teachers it can show that certain classes that are
meant for one gender shouldnt be exclusive, and instead should invite other genders to be part of
it. As a result of doing this they will attract many other people, and have high class participation.
The other conclusion is the more people know about gender than people will find that people are
not different at all, and instead are all the same because both genders do things that would be
considered exclusive. The information will open up peoples perspectives, and the analysis we
How will the information affect colleges in the future? I feel that when they look at the results
we found they will use it for their own benefit. Because gender doesnt affect the amount of
tickets are sold for college football games I feel they will then try and put efforts to bring In all
type of genders in their advertisements. Schools could also be affected in the future in the ways
of how their enrollment is shifted. Universities could use the information to make sure their
demographic breakdown is more even. As a result of this than the reputation of the college will
seem more accepting and this can leak into affecting other areas.
